"Maaan."
He threw some Doritos in his mouth, chewing extra loudly to drown out her shrill calls.
"Maaan!"
Groaning, Maan threw the bag down in defeat. The woman was impossible. For some inane reason, she had it in her head that she was in charge, despite Maan appointing Dev as the project's general manager. Not that Dev minded, of course. In fact, he seemed to be enjoying the show - the bas***d -, goading Heer on to take the reins and make Maan's life -
"Maan! I know you can hear me!"
He looked at his brother darkly.
"You don't have an ounce of family loyalty, do you?"
Dev grinned. "Not even one."
Maan's reply was to throw a pillow at his brother's stupid face, at which Nayantara looked up from her book and frowned. Maan, giving her a sheepish smile, retrieved the pillow from the floor and put it back on the sofa before going to find Heer.
Biwi ki biwi, he silently grumbled.
He found her in the dining room, a glass of iced tea in one hand and the local newspaper in the other; the very picture of dictatorship.
"Ah, Mr Khurana..." came the ominous drawl. She folded the paper and took a long sip of tea. "Ahhh... I've been expecting you."
He rolled his eyes. "Cut the crap, Perera. What do you want?"
"Honestly? Oh, if I could name all the things I want! You ever heard of Fawad Khan?" Heer winked, clearly enjoying the heck out of her little charade.
Maan glared at her, only to be met by a syrupy smile.
"For now, however, I want you to drive out to see Mrs Sherpa from the council. She needs to have our new designs approved by her board and since you love saying that you're the boss and she simply bores the heck out of me..."
"You're kidding. Do you have any idea how many things I have to do today? I don't have the luxury to lounge around all day like some people. I came to work, not for a free holiday -"
"Let me assure you, Khurana, that any holiday of mine would take place on the other side of the world from you."
"Then why are you still here? Do us all a favour and hitch your broom back to Mumbai."
"You've got to update your book of funnies, Khurana. That one doesn't make me laugh anymore."
"Yes because my purpose in life is to entertain you." He pinched the bridge of his nose as she opened her mouth and, so that she could not reply, snapped, "Where's Geet?"
She looked at him sourly. "Oh, I'm sorry, the witching world doesn't work that way. We don't like to keep tabs on others for our own voyeuristic pleasures. Stalker." She muttered, leaving the room.
He followed her into the living room. "I need to know where she is. Geet and I are supposed to go to the site this morning."
"She's already there," Dev cut in in a bored voice.
"What?"
"We went jogging in the morning and she said she was going to go straight to the site once she was done."
"Oh." Maan shifted on his feet. "You went jogging together?"
Dev raised an eyebrow at his brother, waiting for him to continue.
"No, it's just..." Maan shrugged in a manner he hoped was nonchalant. "Did she... did she mention me at all?"
Dev shook his head. "Just that she was going to meet you afterwards."
"Oh. Right."
Maan felt his face heat up at the growing silence. Dev looked puzzled and began to speak when Heer interrupted, a little too conveniently, Maan thought. For once, he was grateful to her.
"Maan. Mrs Sherpa?"
He sighed. "Please, just go in my place. We have some rental cars booked for us. Take one and go see her. You're the one she's been speaking to anyway."
Any softness there had been in Heer's face became replaced by annoyance. "I'm not a strong driver and you know that. And this area is so hilly that... whatever, I'll just reschedule for a day when janaab is free to -"
"I can go with you."
