Yup, definitely happens. In fact, it has happened to me personally. Having lived in US for a long long time, I did not know what was in or out of fashion when I returned to India and when I showed up at a get together wearing something outdated(even though very expensive), I was called a villager by an aunty in front of everyone. Meanwhile most of her "friends" decided to make a joke out of it and asked me what else I had bought from the nearby villages. These are your "high status," "educated," "modern," and supposedly "civilized" women of India. Not just that, but they insisted I talk in english when I could fluently speak hindi and converse with people. My friends, it happens alll the time. When I see it on television, I don't think it is being glorified. It must be shown! Because when you see someone(even a fictional character) who you know is a good person at heart being ridiculed, you realize how wrong these silly little teases are. Then maybe next time when you see someone else or catch yourself having the same thoughts, you might, just might - change your mind.
hey.. ur post has made me rethink on this .. i am still a student so never knew about such happenings.. so considered those scenes to be completely unreal..
since you have shared your personal experience which is something.. it only pains me to read those bold words.. !
y is it so hard for us to accept our own cultural differences? wagging tongues is common .. but i wish that divide never existed to such an extent..
thank you for sharing your views.. they were way too concrete
