JALAL - JODHA

Hi everyone,

I am back again with another of my pointless posts. This time about the leads themselves...

So, Shehenshah Jalaluddin Mohammed and his "Khas Rajvanshi Begum Jodhabai''- here I am trying to analyze the lion and lioness for the first time.

In the show, it is continuously shown that Jalal and Jodha are completely different from each other, in fact poles apart from each other. I am not denying that. But on a different level, they are very similar, in fact just mirror images of each other. Ordinarily, they are opposites and opposites attract.

But opposites too are very similar, in the fact that they are opposites and completely different from each other. I hope I am not sounding like a maniac.Okay, so enough of philosophies, I will bring it down to the ground level.

First and foremost, let us start with appearances.

Jalal and Jodha are extremely good looking. Just as Jodha was the most eligible spinster, he too was the most eligible suitor, if not bachelor. He is one of the most handsome looking men while she is one of the most beautiful women in India, the reason why she landed up in 'Jallad's' harem in the first place. And, they both are quite cute and delightful, too...

Then, Jalal is very brave and isn't scared of anything. Jodha too is not weak or timid. She is the only one in the entire palace who can stand up against him, as said by the king himself. Both of them are extremely talented. If she is "Hunar Ki Khan", Jalal is no less.

Well, if Jalal is the sher, she is the sherni. This was the reason Jalal fell for her and not any other queen of his. And a lion loves only the lioness. Both of them are skilled warriors in sword fighting, archery, horse riding and other pursuits.

Not only that, both the husband and wife are extremely intelligent. He, when it comes to matters of the court, and she in issues like Ruqaiya's divorce. Most importantly, she is smart as she is the only one who can handle Jalal and convince him to do anything she wants. She is smart as praised by Jalal himself. Remember, the chess game?? She lost, but instead of SHE giving HIM a gift, SHE MADE HIM GIFT SHAREEFFUDDIN TO BAKSHI BANU.

Oh, yes, I know what you are thinking. On one hand, they are the smartest invincible duo, and on the other; they are the most foolish people on earth. For instance, the present Sujamal misunderstanding. Jalal and Jodha were equally at fault at many points leading to such a huge mess.

Next, both Jalal and Jodha are extremely emotional. You might disagree, but they are. Even Jalal, THE HEARTLESS. By claiming to be heartless, one cannot become heartless. He always had a heart. That was why he fell for Registaan Ka Gulab' during Ghanghor. Jalal broke down when Bairam khan left, when his child died, when Ruqaiya was leaving and essentially she wouldn't be his best friend if he were heartless. Only the heart understands feelings and relationships like friendship.

She is emotional; I don't think I need to quote anything for that... I suppose.

Next, both Jalal and his beautiful wife are extremely loyal, honest and truthful. They are steadfast in keeping their word. Once they make a promise, they will go to any extent to fulfil it. This is not typical of Rajvanshis or Mughals and is not dependent on communities or anything.

Remember Sukanya's father-in-law, he was in no way, a typical Rajvanshi. And Shareeffuddin, Maham Anga and other Muslims, too, defy rules. So it is nothing about being a Hindu or Muslim. It is about honesty and faithfulness. It is about the values a person has got.

A major highlight in their characteristics, the volatile couple is very, very, very STUBBORN and ADAMANT. If they decide on something, nothing or no one can stop them, but they themselves.

The king and queen are extremely headstrong to the point of hating each other. Their interests clashed because both of them were alike and not because they were different.

Frequently, dearest Begum Ruqaiya mentions how she and her best friend are similar as they love power and position. This is unlike Jodha, as we know she is least bothered about position.

But can we really say so? No. We saw a complete contrast to this trait of hers. This is because a new facet of her personality came to light with Benazir's entry. She may not be bothered about Begum- e- Khas ka Audha but she was bothered about HER UNIQUE position.

Well, the reason she wasn't jealous of Ruqaiya was that she inadvertently, always knew she was above everyone. She might make as many tall claims as she wants. But the fact remains, she was perturbed with Benazir's increasing importance at the cost of her own. She was upset that Benazir sat next to the Shehenshah in the court, which was essentially her place as she herself admitted.

She was jealous of Benazir as Jalal gave her undue importance.

She always, has been aware of the act that Jalal lusted after her. She always holds his gaze when she enters the court. She always has been special to him. This has made her indifferent to all the audhas and positions. She has been loving the control and hold that she has over him. She is not, as she claims, indifferent to his attention. In fact, this is what makes her bold and courageous.

Now can we say, both Jalal and Jodha love power and position?? Yes, we can.

We have agreed that they were a lover of power and position, but only to some extent. They do not live and die for it like Ruqaiya does.

They love their people and kingdom more. Everyone can vouch for that as all the people love both the king and queen immensely.

Jodha and Jalal are duty bound, as they never shirk away from their responsibilities. How can we forget their sense of justice and fair play? Nyay and Insaaf are the most important words in their dictionary. He did punish Bakshi Banu for her wrong doing. Similarly Jodha too, reprimanded her family during the Shivani issue.

Not to forget, both of them have inflated egos and a truck full of attitude, reserved for each other alone. Somehow, Jodha was mellower to Suryabhan, softer than ever she has been with Jalal even when she started loving him. Cute isn't it?

Finally, how can I not mention their infamous hatred/love for each other? Jodha hated nothing more than Jalal, who too, in turn, hated nothing more than Jodha. Now, both die for each other. Jalal and Jodha, now love, nobody more than each other. They live for each other. If one were to die, God forbid, the other would not live too.

So, who said Jalal and Jodha aren't alike???????

THANK YOU

P.S. I apologise if I have bored you.And a request, guys. Please comment, even a word would be appreciated. If not a comment, atleast hit Like. It is disheartening to see 500+ views and 20+ likes.

Okay so this is really late and I'm extremely sorry 😳

I really love the extent and detail of your analysis and how you've tried to include as much angle to this scenario as possible. I whole heartedly agree with your post, however there are a few things I would like to highlight.

@blue
Yes she most certainly is the only one who can handle Jalal 😊
Ruqaiyya has forever believed (and to a great extent it has been true) that she rules Jalal's mind and that she understands him better than anyone. As Jalal began to change, so did his relationship with Ruks, she was no longer ruling his mind, and she most certainly failed to understand him and the growing heartbeat of the heart she always believed didn't exist.

Jodha, on the other hand, simultaneously began to understand Jalal on a deep emotional and mental level. She began to empathise with him rather than sympathise (e.g. boat scene where he says he has had more baddua than dua and no one loves him more than his shamsheer vs Sukanya's marriage track where Jo tells him she pities him as no one can ever love him after he tries to explain why he can't go back to Agra)

The growing fondness and understanding between the two eventually blossomed into love. Jodha, as stated by Jalal himself during the Harem voting agenda, has been with him through thick and thin, happiness and agony, and has always been there for him. She has seen the worst parts of him (whether that was his anger, vengeance or his shattered self after he punished Bakshi) and the best (giving of the Ratanpur fort, keeping his vacchan, supporting her, his loyalty, sense of justice and fairness & equality) and has finally accepted Jalal whole-heartedly (mind you, this does not equate to any sharirik sambandh)

So yes, she can most certainly handle him at his worst, his best and most definitely at his weakest 👏 (apologies to the long response to this particular part, but I really wanted to highlight it)

@red

I don't completely agree that she can convince him to do anything that SHE wants, I understand what you're trying to say (and I agree) but the way this is worded sounds like he is a puppet in her hands 😆 although yes, she has a great influence on him and he does tend to go to great extents to keep her happy and fulfil her wishes 😳

I love this argument of yours. I will only like to focus on Jo, as Jalal's love for power and position has always been clear. Many wouldn't agree that Jo loved power and position compared to either Jalal or Ruks, but your argument makes it crystal clear that yes she did indeed enjoy power and position, albeit nothing compared to Ruks.

I personally would like to add that the kind of power and position Ruks wants to obtain is not what Jo is after. Jo at this point, not completely involved in the politics of the Mughal Sultanate, only desires power and position related to Jalal. Something like emotional and mental power, and her position in Jalal's life. Because even after winning the harem election, her only purpose was insaaf, fairness and equality. Once she had achieved most of her goals, she stepped down. This to me says she wasn't concerned with being politically secure in the court, it was her emotional attachment towards the harem and her love for justice which lead her to take this step.

As seen when Jalal first presents Jo (and Salima) with the 'Khaas' title, Jo is unsure about this decision of his, she wasn't as happy until Moti clarified that Jalal was showing 'apnapan' towards her. This closeness and trust eventually embedded it's way into Jo's heart, and she began to take important steps which lead to huge reformations. What I'm trying to say is, Jo's opinions were being highly regarded by Jalal at this time, she held an influential mental power over him, and she also knew that she affected him emotionally. When Jalal put Benazir's opinions before Jo, she was upset, not because she seemingly didn't hold much value concerning political decisions, but because someone else had taken her place in Jalal's mind (or so she thought) hence, her jealousy, fuelled by her growing emotional attachment to her husband, lead to her feeling uncomfortable towards Ben and possessive towards Jalal.

Also, Jo definitely enjoys Jalal's attention and focus on her, so that's another factor of her jealousy towards Ben seemingly getting Jalal's attention while he ignored her. Her growing discomfort and restlessness about her position in Jalal's life being threatened (not the Shahenshah's court) is the core reason for her love of power and position (at this particular time, meaning, later on she is going to be much more involved in the court politically).

She always, has been aware of the fact that Jalal lusted after her.

For this, I would like to say that personally I don't think lust is the right word. Yes, he has been attracted to her from the beginning, but I think it just ends there. We shouldn't forget that he married her for revenge (he felt humiliated that she had put a sword at the Shahenshah of Hindustan's throat). And Jalal most certainly wanted her, but I never felt it was for lustful purposes, rather, he wanted her as a prize in his harem. He wanted to break her guroor and destroy her.

When Jalal tells her that he will arrange for her return to Amer (after her suicide attempt) he also tells her that he finds it weird that as a husband he doesn't even want to look at her, and this I felt, indicated the lustful kind of want. It's true he has been attracted to her and her beauty, but I still don't think lust is the right word. He has on many occasions been astounded by her good looks but at the same time, he didn't want her physically. To him, she was the proof of his victory. He was intrigued and captivated by her beauty and the slow emergence of her personality (e.g. sword fight scene, where he was enchanted by her hunars, her beauty and also her sympathy and love for a daasi).

The more Jalal grew to know and understand Jo, the more his simple attraction and acknowledgement of her beauty transformed into love. At first, Jalal knew Jodha was a beautiful and fiery princess. He was enthralled by her beauty, but this did not mean he lusted after her, rather, he was fascinated by the many layers of Jo's personality which soon drew him to her, and this allurement doesn't equate to lust 😊

Overall, an excellent post. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 👏
