Considering the discussion here...what qualifies you to be Indian? The citizenship, the ancestry or the nurturing?

If you were born in US/elsewhere, you are a US/other citizen but your parents are Indian and you were brought up almost all your life in India. Are you Indian enough to rule Indian films?

If only your parents are Indians, you were born in India but never really lived in India, are you Indian enough to rule Indian films?

If your parents are foreign but you were born in India and lived here all your life, are you Indian enough to rule Indian films?

If you worked your ass off and achieved something in a country where you were not born or have no connection in terms of ancestry but it is your home you love the people the food you love the country maybe in love with an Indian aka you are an immigrant...are you Indian enough to rule Indian films?

Most people will hold onto their foreign passports because it is damn easy to travel...if you are a US or British citizen you don't need visa to travel to many places and that can be a big plus! So holding a passport of a country has nothing to do with how you feel for a place or its people!

THIS!

This post deserves a topic of discussion on its own. I think it encompasses a lot of issues we see often.

Bollywood films are an industry. I don't think citizenship or ancestry should matter. What is relevant is good roles, good performance and suitability to the role. Of course you want the person to enter legally and be law abiding.

Hollywood is not ideal, but I would use it as an example. The industry is a melting pot of people varying in citizenship and ancestry. I think Indian cinema needs to be more embracing of diversity.

I think the problem is our diversity doesn't make sense. Our movies end up stereotyping people or casting pretty faces in unsuitable roles.

"I am an Indian. I was born in Denmark, but I hold an Indian passport. I am an Indian citizen and I am proud to be Indian," Deepika said.
