The World Health Day is celebrated every year on April 7th, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 1948, the WHO held the First World Health Assembly .The Assembly decided to celebrate 7th April of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day. The World Health Day is held to mark WHO's founding, and is seen as an opportunity by the organization to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year. The WHO organizes international, regional and local events on the Day related to a particular theme. Resources provided continue beyond 7 April, that is, the designated day for celebrating the World Health Day.

World Health Day 2014 will spotlight some of the most commonly known vectors -such as mosquitoes, sandflies, bugs, ticks and snails - responsible for transmitting a wide range of parasites and pathogens that can cause many different illnesses. Mosquitoes, for example, transmit malaria - the most deadly vector-borne disease, causing an estimated 660 000 deaths annually worldwide - as well as dengue fever, lymphatic filariasis ,chikungunia ,Japanese encephalitis & yellow fever

The goal of the World Health Day 2014 campaign is better protection from vector-borne diseases, especially for families living in areas where diseases are transmitted by vectors, and travelers to countries where they pose a health threat. The campaign also advocates for health authorities in countries where vector-borne diseases are a public health problem or emerging threat, to put in place measures to improve surveillance and protection.

Manu ...very good post ...informative and educative ! Thank you !

Each year a theme is selected that highlights a priority area of public health. The Day provides an opportunity for individuals in every community to get involved in activities that can lead to better health.

The topic for 2014 is vector-borne diseases.

Vectors are organisms that transmit pathogens and parasites from one infected person (or animal) to another. Vector-borne diseases are illnesses caused by these pathogens and parasites in human populations.

The most deadly vector-borne disease, malaria, caused an estimated 660 000 deaths in 2010. However, the world's fastest growing vector-borne disease is dengue, with a 30-fold increase in disease incidence over the last 50 years. Globalization of trade and travel and environmental challenges such as climate change and urbanization are having an impact on transmission of vector-borne diseases, and causing their appearance in countries where they were previously unknown.

World Health Day 2014 will spotlight some of the most commonly known vectors - such as mosquitoes, sandflies, bugs, ticks and snails - responsible for transmitting a wide range of parasites and pathogens that attack humans or animals. Mosquitoes, for example, not only transmit malaria and dengue, but also lymphatic filariasis, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis and yellow fever.

Mosquitoes, flies, ticks and bugs may be a threat to your health - and that of your family at home .Viruses are among the leading causes of death and disability in the world. Being able to quickly bring together the most knowledgeable researchers without regards to borders and political agendas to address viral threats such as chikungunya.

So prevention is always better than cure !!

This is the message of this year's World Health Day, on 7 April

Manu thanks for the informative post.😊
This year world health day stresses on preventing vector borne infections. Since single method to destroy all sorts of insects won't be effective . So there is an effort to formulate integrated Vector Management which includes the strategy to clean the enviornment. The said programme can diminish breeding grounds by applying modern means of techniques.
Health should be the prime concern. It should not be neglected at any cost. The Govt should see that the rural health centres are performing their functions sincerely and it includes educating the rural gentry about vector borne diseases.
