Jehangir can be called the first scientist emperor(and only) of india. He had child like enthusiasm to discover something new and keenly observed nature and animals.

Jehangir's temperament for discovering new things and new facts was unwatched to any rulers (except his own grandfather Humayun). He was not only interested in experiments but also a naturalist.

Here are some of his curious experiements

1) Jehangir correctly wrote in his autobiograhpy that an Elephant gestation period is 18 months by observing his pet elephants and it was confirmed later in 20th century.

2) Once a deer was thrown into Jehangir's tiger cage for meal and they became friends. The deer would sleep keeping its head on tigers chest and the tiger licked it like a parent and showered attention. This matter was informed to the emperor who was awe struck and decided to conduct an experiement on animal psychology. Then he got an idea and removed that deer from cage and brought a similar deer(size, age) and put it in cage. The tiger immediately attacked and killed it and ate it. Then a sheep was put inside and it met the same fate. When the other deer was then put in back with the tiger, the tiger treated it with the usual love and affection liking its face and allowing it to sleep by placing its head on his chest.

3) Jehangir even cross bred animals for ex: Markhur goats with Barbary goats, lion with a tiger etc

4) He like disceting animals and checking what is inside them. His dissection experiments included reptiles, crocodiles, birds, lions, tigers etc. Once he had a lion dissected to check from where it derived its strength and courage and concluded that it was because of its gall bladder enclosed in its liver and another time because of its paws etc

5) Once a person got bitumen from persia because it was reputed to mend broken bones and conducted experiements and concluded the claim was false.

6) He conducted experiments on soil from various locations and concluded that some places like Gujarat had better fertile lands than places like agra.

7) Once a man claimed that laughter arises because people eat saffron and if you eat in large quantities it leads to death. So he got a hardened criinal to eat half a kilo saffron in front of him and that person neither laughed nor died.

8) Once a yogi came and claimed that he can eat any quantity of arrack but be in his senses. So Jehangir made him drink arrack and after a few pints he passed out.

9) For 5 years Jehangir kept two saras cranes with him and observed them and recorded all their behaviour, mating, kids etc in accurate detail that would make any biologist proud.

10) Once a person claimed and cheated people that he can give long life. So Jehangir told him he will tie his hands and legs and push him in Yamuna river from top of fort. If he comes out alive he will give him all his wealth and even his crown. The man got scared and accepted he had lied.
A person once told him that lions/tigers cannot change their true nature and will kill any human if give opportunity. So he brought a few of his pet lions/tigers and made them be in his room for weeks and they never tried to kill him. He had such good camaderie with animals(or knew psychology of animals very well) that sometimes in forest wild deers etc would come and eat out of his hand.

He conducted many more experiements that have been recorded in Mughal chronicles and even Jehangirnama. He was a person who could not be easily convinced to do anything because he demanded proof for everything instead of believing. He would often challenge/question claims of holy man and it would be tough for them to prove him their claims about the things written in scriptures. Hence they labelled him as an aethist. Like Jehangir told the Jesuits that he will convert to Christanity if they threw the cross in fire and it does not burn as they claimed. He was a naturalist who observed nature, animals etc and gave details of flora and fauna of that time.

He was a contradictory person. He loved his pet animals very much and would get upset and mourn for days if he lost them and also build them tombs. His pet lions and tigers he fed with his own hands sometimes. But also he was a prolific hunter.

Yes, Jahangir was a scientist, when he was not drunk or under the influence of opium. And that was a very rare thing indeed.

Usually scientist and creative people like poets, novelists are eccentric people.
Apart from being scientist he was also a good poet and artist(painter)
Regarding wine and opium addiction that is usually because of friend influences and family situation. Going to war field at a very young age has its effects on human mind. Usually soldiers etc who see cruelty(especially children at young age) are affected psychologically and they remove that frustration on family(by becoming voilent) or by drinking, smoking, addiction etc. Its not easy to watch a person dying in front of their eyes especially when they themselves have killed even more tough to forget. Sleep vanishes and usually they have nightmares of that although no soldier shall admit it openly as they think it means they are weak hearted. So to soothe the guilt in mind they drink, smoke, addict, become voilent etc
But he also banned drinking and smoking in his empire. That shows he knew what ill effects it had and did not want others to become addicts like him. Also none of his children became addicts that means he ensured it that none of them gave into that vice like him. That usually happens people who are addicted to somethings never allow their kids to tread that path as they know its ill effects. So he never allowed his sons and Murad and Daniyal's children to drink in excess and become addicts that is enough.

I don't know why he fell under the influence of liquor and opium, but once he did he was no good to anybody. Akbar recognized his failings and that is why he wanted Khusrau to succeed him.

It is rumored that he poisoned his father for the throne. And once Jahangir forcibly took the crown, he embarked on a few years of terror, till he was totally debilitated by drinking and opium.

He executed Guru Arjan Dev, he blinded his own son Khusrau, he hung the two sons of Abdur Rahim Khan e Khana and he set the stage for brother fights brother, son fights father for the throne.

But more than these occasional bouts of cruelty, he abdicated his responsibility. He frittered away Akbar's legacy and began to rescind the policies of religious equality. His failings are too many to ignore.

Praising Jahangir's qualities is like saying that Hitler was a talented artist and a budding architect.

Thank you for the explanation. Seems plausible.

I don't know why he fell under the influence of liquor and opium, but once he did he was no good to anybody. Akbar recognized his failings and that is why he wanted Khusrau to succeed him.
Khusrau was a good human no doubt about it but he was as impatient as jehangir. Do you know he rebelled three times and tried to assasinate jehangir many times before jehangir told to make him blind. The court had demanded to kill him so that there is peace in mughal empire but jehangir followed humayun's way and blinded him to stop repeated rebellions as mughal empire for first 3-4 years was always in civil war state. But what he did to Khusrau's supporters was wrong.

It is rumored that he poisoned his father for the throne. And once Jahangir forcibly took the crown, he embarked on a few years of terror, till he was totally debilitated by drinking and opium.
Many top historians do not believe jehangir had poisoned his father. This rumor started because once jehangir was 22 years old and akbar fell very ill with stomach pain and abul fazl suspected salim had tried to poison him. So Akbar told salim when this entire kingdom was his after him why he tried to kill him? In reality salim had not tried to poison akbar and salim was angry at abul fazl. From that day he never forgave abul fazl for sowing seed of mistrust between his father and him. In later years Daniyal married a sati hindu widow against wishes of akbar and also became addict so abul fazl started poisoning akbar's mind against daniyal too. Daniyal complained to jehangir about this matter and then jehangir decided to finish abul fazl as he was advising akbar against family members especially jehangir. Jehangir was scared that akbar will bypass him for throne on advice of abul fazl.
FYI- Daniyal told his wives and children to be taken to allahabad and handed under jehangir's care after his death not to agra. And jehangir was made gaurdian- foster father of his kids and they and daniyal's wives lived at allahabad fort with him till akbar and jehangir were reconciled and they went back to agra.

He executed Guru Arjan Dev, he blinded his own son Khusrau, he hung the two sons of Abdur Rahim Khan e Khana and he set the stage for brother fights brother, son fights father for the throne.
Guru Arjan Dev was fined by jehangir because he sided with his rebel son Khusrau. But the guru did not pay so Jehangir told a commander to punish him. Jehangir had no idea that the guru was killed so cruelly as he was not there at that time. Jehangir had never told his deewan of Punjab to kill or torture the guru.
Please read the following from the Sikh chronologies
''Guru Arjan Dev started reforms in Sikh polity and religion, and selected Amritsar as the centre of the Sikh community. Here he completed the digging of the sacred pool (Amritsar) and finalized the construction of the sacred temple Darbar Sahib started by his father. Up till now the Sikhs used to offer nazrana (offerings) in cash and kind to the Guru. Guru Arjan Dev regulated these offerings into a systematic tax which was collected through men especially appointed for the purpose to twenty two Manjas. The amount collected was paid to the Guru in a great Darbar held annually on the occasion of Baisakhi at Amritsar. Guru Arjan Dev compiled and arranged the writings of his predecessors under the title Adi Granth (the first book). With the gradual increase in his power and authority, he is alleged to have started interfering with the affairs of the state. In 1605 A.D. when prince Khasrau revolted against his father, Emperor Jahangir, the Guru is said to have helped the rebellious prince not only with his blessings but also with money. Khasrau was, however, defeated and captured. Prithi Chand, the elder brother of Arjan Dev, who had earlier unsuccessfully contested the Guruship and Chandu Lal, the Diwan of Lahore, to whose daughter the Guru had refused to betroth his son, exploited the situation and exaggerated the pad played by the Guru in inciting Khasrau's revolt. The Emperor ordered that the Guru's case be decided in accordance with the Yasa, the law of Changez Khan. The Guru was fined two lakhs rupees which he was unable to pay and as such was given in the custody of Diwan Chandu Lal and at last died in June 1606 A.D.''
''That the Guru died from tortures inflamed by Chandu Lal is first referred by Mohsin Fani, author of Dabistan-e-Mazahib... This is one Of the earliest and most authentic references throwing light on the Guru's Martyrdom and clears up the misunderstanding that the Emperor Jahangir was responsible for Guru's death, by clearly mentioning that Chandu Lal seizing the opportunity of non-payment of the fine by the Guru and further instigated by Prithi Chand, the unscrupulous brother, tortured the Guru to death. It may be said that as head of the state Jahangir was responsible for the action of his officers, but the fact, that the Sikh records testify, that on hearing about the inhuman treatment meted out to Guru Arjan Dev, Chandu Lal was handed over to Guru Har Gobind, the son and successor of the Guru, ''to be treated by him as he liked. It shows that Jahangir was extremely sorry and annoyed at this tragic event and as an act of exemplary punishment, he handed over the offender to the aggrieved.''
Please also read the following Jehangir and Guru Arjan dev's son were friends

But more than these occasional bouts of cruelty, he abdicated his responsibility. He frittered away Akbar's legacy and began to rescind the policies of religious equality. His failings are too many to ignore.
Jehangir was even more liberal than Akabr ever was. He doanted to build Kashi temple when he was governor of Allahabad. He gave 5 lacs to Bundela chief to build Keshav Rao temple in mathura(all these temples destroyed by aurangzeb). Aurangzeb who had no issue visiting Akbar's gave refused to enter Jehangir's tomb saying it is of an infidels.

Praising Jahangir's qualities is like saying that Hitler was a talented artist and a budding architect.
Jehangir can no way be compared to Hitler he never carried out cruel killings in war like Akbar and his other mughal contemprories. Indeed he would punish officers who tried to kidnap, kill enemy citizens or soldiers after surrender. When he got a complaint that Khurram had taken mewar citizens as hostage and torturing them to make Amar Singh surrender he ordered Khurram to immediately release them and send them back to families and that if he commited any atrocities on locals he would punish khurram. There is a letter to this effect displayed in a london museum. During one war against Pratap/Amar Singh(i am not sure which one) daughter, Jehangir was hunting nearby(he was teenager) and when he found her he took her to his tent gave her food/presents and told his bodygaurds to send her back to aravalli hills(where pratap/amar singh lived). They are many other incidents that prove that he was not a cold hearted warrior and was kind and considerate. So historians do not believe he was bad
The problem is Jehangir although done very few atrocities are glorified more and other emperors done many more cruelitites but their good things glorified more. Not sure why? But many books they say that two Mughal emperors were good and humane and that is Humayun and Jehangir.
