May be 300 is not the right rate for 5 hrs but also it's not the rate for 20-30 mins at least in the part of India I belong. Even if you double to 600, for working 8-10 hrs it's not more than 1000-1200.

I don't think domestic servants in India are in sooo pitiable state. They know how much to demand, they are not so foolish or innocent.Karam Apna Apna.If they want ,they too can educate and then work like us.There is no much difference between them and us.We are cyber coolies and they are non cyber coolies. No one gets money for free.Human rights and all these is stupid stuff.....
I say this because earlier I too used to feel soo much for these domestic servants. We used to have an elderly lady as domestic servant and we used to treat her very respectfully, she used to work for some 1hour or 45 minutes.I used to teach to her grandson free and used to buy books, pens and all.She broke our faith by stealing somany things from our pooja room.We adopted somany of Sherlock Holmes techniques and could trace her activities. We did'nt say anything to her,we just asked her to leave.
Not all the domestic servants are like this but we need not worry much about them ....
Cheers,
Mythili

It's sad that you treated your kaamwali nicely but she had hurt your trust. Experience apna apna. Not everyone is like that, and the bigger role plays here is their poverty. How can you say human rights is a stupid thing for them? When people work in firms or company's, some do cheat and take bribery in spite of having money, why only blame the poor people? A teacher gives private tutions in spite of it being unlawful. But still everyone has a secured future. Why can't they have? Their service is a kind of service too. We are the employers, so it should be our duty too to think about them.

I know in India stealing is a big problem. That's why I was saying that Govt. should standardize everything, so that they can work through proper channels thereby making us feel less worried. As someone said the agencies are growing up. Still we need to go to the core and make everyone a part of it. When India is shining, everyone should be a part of that.

Servants and Kaamwali bai as well as cooks (maharaj) have come along way as far as making money and demands.

When I was child-young again many yrs ago servants were under paid though very loyal and dependable. Boy I miss my Ganu 😭 😭 But again at that time salaries were very low for everyone.

But now a days they have same opportunities or many be even more available to them to educate themselves and make as much money as the next person.

I agree with Vineet, Kabhi, Myth and others.

Pradarshakji times have changed. Now servants control employers. IMHO.
