Domestic Servants in India

Do you consider domestic servants in India are rightly treated? I am not focusing on how people communicate/behave with them, but the way they are paid for their services. After coming to USA this thing has striken my mind many a times, here a person who gives 8-10 hrs domestic service(household help, nanny, etc.) is paid enough to live a fairly normal and respectable life. I know things are lot more different in both countries and lot of factors come in between like population, work facilities, unemployment. But don't you consider it's a labour exploitation, a person who is on duty for hrs. just like any working person gets so less.

1)Leave along the full-time service, even for part-time service he/she is not well paid, many a times that leads to stealing.

2)They are not expected to have specific holidays(except for when they bunk), even though both babu-bibi are enjoying their holidays in the weekends and other national holidays.

3) No rules, no laws. Where are the human rights for them?

May be I am wrongly guided by my emotions, hope you guys will enlighten me. But I feel that person too has the right to live a better life than that.

In India these days they have 'Help Agencies' which provides domestic help, Home nurse etc. If you hire from them then Sundays are holidays and also they have a fixed monthly income. You get to check their history and references too. If you don't like their work then you can complain to the agency. If they have a problem then they can complain too. It is almost same as how we hire help in US.
Now if you are talking about people who come to us for work without the help of any agency then they don't have any rights and everything is negotiable and pretty much on our terms.

Yes Maya, I have heard about them(agencies) too. That's good. Don't think it's been practiced by all, at least majority.

I think the govt. can do something about it. A job is a job, it shoulld be treated like that. Making it a law, a contract job, a standard wage. Also they can get help in the form of small loans from their babus when they need it badly like in illness, child's marriage, child's education, etc. It is very difficult to imagine a life with no insurance, pension or future savings.

Riju, Actually the govt. made these help agencies for the same purpose. There are private help agencies too. Now it is their choice to register themselves there. Otherwise the domestic help you are talking about is kind of self employed and govt. cannot force babus to draft the wage or leave permits.

hmm....

Salary of a B Com grad.... Rs. 1500/- may be after unemployment for 2-3 years after studies.... he starts getting some Rs. 3000/- after the age of 30 when married and has a life.....

Similar situation for other grads except for professionals....

The servants who work for 7-8 hrs in India are definitely not emplyed by middle class..... they are employed by upper middle and rich class.... who pay around 2500-3000 to them, which is better than a fresh graduate.....

its better than what our government pays to cleaning staff of municipal corporation.....

You go anywhere in the world the salaries will be comparative to the surrounding area.... The labour in Japan is the costliest but the cities there are also costliest....

In USA if the worker can afford a two wheeler, the owner would have 2 cars....

In India owner normally has one car and the worker has a bycycle.... So basically some places yes they are paid very less.... but I dont think the salaries are less compared to surrounding areas for workers for 7-8 hrs

When I graduated Engg, my first job paid me 1800/month(14 hrs/day, normal workweek 6 days, always went to 60-70 hrs/week with no OT). My mom used to pay the kaamwali Rs 1500. The mason on my fathers construction company was making Rs 4000.

The kaamwali had a son who went to school, now is a software consultant makes about Rs 4-5 lac/yr.

The mason's son is again a mason makes considerably more than what his Dad used to make, they all party on a Wednesday spend Rs 1000 on food and a drink, that is a family tradition.

You can only help those who want to help themselves.

I agree Sareg. The domestic help in my house in India gets 3000 and that includes only kitchen work.
