One look at Ranveer Singh's wardrobe and you'll know he has an edge over other actors. He conforms neither to the classics nor the popular. In fact, he's one of the few actors who is brave to experiment and go quirky - much in keeping with his personality. We have seen him wearing neon, crazy prints, funky hats and what not? He's a trendsetter. Period. He earns brownie points even when it comes to red carpet fashion. His suits are always sharply cut and well fitted. What's more, he doesn't stick to the usual blacks or browns, he opts for a coloured shirt. Read on to know more about his fashion fetishes...


What is your fashion philosophy?
Fashion philosophy is you expressing your personality through your attire. People think fashion is conforming to the norm, to the trend, but for me it's the opposite. Not conforming and being yourself, wearing what you want and what makes you feel good... that is fashion.

Are you particular about where you shop?
Some brands have a distinct style. I like what comes out of their school of design. I usually wear Rohit & Rahul, I wear a lot of Adidas, Diesel and Gas.

What are your fetishes?
Sneakers and hats. I love them. I have over 200 shoes and 100 hats. Also I'm particular about my jeans. I love buying t-shirts online.

Please share some incident that happened while shopping...
I was once in Paris with 160 euros left in my pocket. I bought two shorts for 80 euros each and was left broke! A patent Ranveer Singh look is...Sneakers, track pants and a t-shirt.

What's your favourite red carpet look?
A three-piece suit oozing sex. I like sharp cuts but I don't like black or white suits. I like to experiment with colours. The distinction comes with colour.

But what colours can men experiment with?
I want to wear a neon suit at the next Filmfare Awards. Last year at the awards I wanted to wear a lime green or a pink suit. But then I wore those colours for my performances on stage. I will start a trend of neon suits.

Nanga (naked)! Usse zyaada wild aur primitive kya ho sakta hai?

What according to you is a fashion faux pas?
A faux pas is when you wear clothes that don't complement your physicality.

Have you ever made a fashion faux pas?
All the time. I don't conform to trends na. When I started out with Band Baaja Baaraat, I used to wear what a young hero was expected to wear. But slowly I realised that I'm not comfortable wearing those clothes. That I'm trying to fit into a prototype. So now I usually dress the way I want to.

How aware are you of men's fashion?
I love good clothes. For me what is in trend or what is latest is not important. In fact, retro is a big part of the way I dress. But I love to see fashion magazines and say, Waah kya look hai'. I love clothes.

What are the clothes you refrain from?
I don't like the preppy look. I'm not a preppy dresser. I hate the American tea party look. Where you're dressed in pink and light-blue sweaters. In America eight out of 10 people look the same. Everyone's wearing the same jeans, same brands and same shoes. Girls wear the same black colour leggings with same side ponytails and side-shouldered top. Also
I hate skinny jeans.

Do you think fashion is a state of mind?
Fashion is an expression of what you're feeling.

Do you shop for yourself?
All the time. Now I have money, so I can shop for myself. Otherwise, I was pampered by my sister. Now not only do I shop for myself, even others shop for me. Like my stylist, Nitasha Gaurav, she is fab. She makes me look awesome in a suit.

What's your favourite shopping destination?
Online. I only buy t-shirts though.

What are the things you love in your wardrobe?
I love the fact that it's so extensive. If you go through it you will say, That is such a Ranveer thing to wear!' There are distinctive, one of a kind, individual pieces. I love socks. The most quirky I go with is my socks. My wardrobe is not run-of-the-mill. There is character to each article.

What are the five must-haves in a man's wardrobe?
Plain white sneakers, a black leather jacket, coloured jeans, crisp white shirts and a white tee. You can live your whole life with this much.

What are the least expensive and the most expensive things in your wardrobe?
The least expensive things are these rings with Christian motifs that Nitasha got me from Mount Mary Church in Bandra. The most expensive thing is probably a suit or a pair of shoes or a watch. Yeah, my watches are expensive. Again, my most expensive things are the cheapest because they are gifted to me.

What's your most cherished gift?
My sister gifted me a t-shirt that I wore the day my film released. It's a t-shirt from H&M. Plain white with bold red print that reads Born To
Be Famous'.

What is the one thing you have given as a keepsake to someone special?
All my ex-girlfriends have been gifted one special t-shirt. Sometimes they return after we break-up, sometimes they don't. The most special was the light blue Super Mario t-shirt that I gifted a very special girlfriend.

If you have to swap your wardrobe with another actor, who would it be?
Imran Khan. He is the best dressed guy. Little preppy, but he pulls it off well. Maybe his wife (Avantika) has got to do a lot with it.

Who is your fashion icon?
Amitabh Bachchan. I've never seen anyone dress like him, consistently for decades. He is a style icon, a legend.

While travelling, do you pick up stuff from local markets?
All the time. Joh dikha, pasand aaya, utha liya. But the best part is to pick up different things from different places and then put them all together. To look like an assembly line product is death of fashion and creativity.

What's your fashion secret?
I love neon colours. I have neon caps, jackets and shoes. I'm beyond psychedelic clothes. I love retro dressing. Retro is my favourite. I try on at least 100 pairs of jeans, before I settle on one. I never repeat my jeans. I wear them once and it goes for washing. If I'm wearing plain-white sneakers, I can't handle even a speck on them. If it happens, I'll excuse myself, go aside, clean it and come back. I have an OCD about this. I clean my shoes myself! My shoes are my children, my army of 200. It's my trademark, even fedoras. American baseball caps are also my favourites.

What's your fashion fear?
The speck on white sneakers. I get disturbed.

What your favourite party look?
Nanga (nude)! I love pool parties. Board shorts and sunglasses. Nanga party is best party.

What's your Sunday brunch look?
Linen pants with a malmal shirt.

Have you imagined what you would be wearing on your wedding day?
I have thought of getting married and having children but never thought of the wedding day or what I would wear. Probably, it'll be a trance party and I'll be in a tribal outfit. Three days of trance partying.

Things you want to steal from your father's wardrobe...
Everything. He has awesome expensive things. He is larger than me so his clothes don't fit. I would take his watches for sure.

Do you look at the price when you shop?
Never!
