Chapter 17 - Past...

Zoya was jerked back to the present at the sound of a car horn in the streets and found that she had been crying again as she had three years ago. Impatiently, Zoya wiped away her tears and chided herself for letting the past get the better of her. She was stronger now; no longer the child who had been foolishly hoping that one day everything will be alright.

Now Zoya knew better. She understood world better

With a self-deprecating smile, Zoya made for the bathroom when she remembered that Asad had sought her out today. The three years ago Zoya would have immediately assumed such a fact but not her. Not the Zoya she had become today.

Uncle Feroz must have sent Asad the papers today; Humaira and she had signed the property documents more than a fortnight ago after completing the formalities. Asad must have been looking for her to thank her or to bid her a final farewell.

Picking up her phone to text Asad, Zoya felt a moment of hesitation; she did not want his gratitude. According to her, she had done nothing out of norm for Asad; she would have paid back every rupee if she had the capacity. But even after a full background check on Gaffur Siddiqui's background, Zoya had come up with little information and could not trace all his wives and mistresses. Zoya had not even known the existence of Humaira until her name had been disclosed in the will.

Hardly surprising since Mr. Siddiqui had been a con man and must have covered his tracks carefully. Officially, Gaffur Siddiqui had three wives but had married Zoya's mother Zainab first. Their marriage had been a secret since her mother had been an upcoming very promising model and married models were not very accepted at that time.

One and a half year later, Zainab living in her own bubble of happiness had fallen pregnant and had left her job to be finally acknowledged as Gaffur Siddiqui's begam. It was then that the true nature of her husband had surfaced. Zainab's case had been his first con and he had been patient waiting for Omar Farooqui, her mother's father to accept Gaffur as his son-in-law. But Omar had been a hard man and when Zainab had been pregnant, he had disowned his own child losing hope that Zainab might leave her husband.

Finally when Gaffur had realized that he would not be getting any money from Omar, he had dropped out of Zainab's life like hot potato leaving her three months pregnant with Zoya. Destitute and helpless, Zainab had clung to life still not completely able to accept the deceit she had endured. But all her illusions had ended when only three months later, Gaffur had found another prey Aabida Shah a not so rich heiress. They had married three months later two days after Zoya was born.

Aabida had not seen anything coming her way and had been robbed of every rupee and had warned her best friend Shireen Qureshi, Humaira's mother, about Gaffur with whom she had been having an affair. But Shireen had believed that Aabida was only being spiteful to avenge Gaffur who had divorced her only three months later.

All properties acquired from his second marriage and Qureshi properties had been dissolved into investments for Mr. Siddiqui's company which had become quite a success at that time but greed had no limits, right? One year later, he had married another heiress Aalia Malik for some financial back up if ever his company bankrupted.

At some point in time, a friend of Aalia discovered his sham and threatened to report him to the police. Chastised when his wife had confronted him, Gaffur had tried to convince his wife that he had changed and had loved her for real. And what better way to prove your love to someone than pledge your devotion to her when she could bore no child? Aalia had been unable to conceive and that was why Gaffur had adopted Zoya, threatening to drag Zainab in court. Finally seeing Gaffur as the man he had really been, Zainab had died heartbroken some months later when Zoya had been snatched from her.

Fate had decided to intervene and Tanveer had been born at that time out of wedlock and was the bas***d they had always accused her of being. Gaffur had of course been having regular meetings with his beloved Razia throughout his heck of an expedition.

At the birth of Tanveer, Gaffur had decided to terminate his marriage with Aalia and therefore gave her Talaaq one year later after extorting only some of her money. Aalia had dragged Gaffur to court but he had managed to come clean declaring Aalia as crazy. After this Gaffur had no choice but to keep Zoya with him. For the next three years, Gaffur had not remarried and had preferred to stick to unlimited number of affairs and extort meagre amount of money until he had met Dilshaad Ahmed Khan. The temptation had been too strong to resist.

Siddiqui Enterprise had been suffering from a financial crisis and Dilshaad had been an easy prey. Forced into an arranged marriage, Dilshaad had been vulnerable and vulture Gaffur had wasted no time in conning her as well.

Gaffur's initial plan with Razia had been to marry each other only when they had acquired enough wealth to last their entire lifetime. Eventually they did that after stealing from Dilshaad. This had been the reason for Dilshaad's Suicide.

In a weird way, Zoya could understand Asad's drive to do justice. She had been a victim of Gaffur Siddiqui's duplicity too and had he not been her father, Zoya would have wanted to avenge her mother too. That was why when Zoya had learnt about Asad's mother, it had been easier for her to understand the betrayal of Asad when he had not shown up for the Nikaah.

Of course, it didn't excuse what Asad had done but Zoya could somehow understand him. She could understand why he hated her that much. Allah knew, even she hated herself for being the daughter of Gaffur Siddiqui. But it was not in Zoya power to change that bitter and only truth of her life.

That was why Zoya had volunteered to exchange her Siddiqui Mansion for Sheikh Properties.
