I am not really sure what exactly is meant by sautela in hindi. My knowledge about hindi is mostly from serials and my education. For me 'saut' is somebody whom the husband gets close to other than his wife (the lady can be your husband's second or first wife or he may be in an illicit relationship with her)😆 😆 And I have heard children of the saut being called sautela. So sautela might mean half sibling coz the father of the kids is the same in the eg. I have given.

But in English step sibling and half sibling mean the same here in India as in any part of the world.
Somebody whose mother tongue is Hindi can clarify this. But in English there is a difference between step sibling and half sibling. Also it might be the influence of hindi that a lot of people in India forget the difference between the two terms even when it comes to English. But since my mother tongue is not Hindi and because I am from South India( we are less fluent in Hindi compared to people in other parts of the country) it doesn't make sense to me if the CV's have projected Ranveera as step siblings when they are actually not. ( I haven't read any English versions of the synopsis of the show and neither do I think that SBS/SBB use English words for the same😕😕).

Yes they are half siblings. Same Dad, different Mothers. Ranvi's mum is Ratan. Veera's mum is Amrita.

But the word "step" indicates that they are the children of different parents who are related through marriage. This is the wrong word to use.

But in India I think they call them "step" as a direct translation of "SAUTELA" which means "child of Other women". The other women or second wife is called "Sauten". So all children born to said Sauten would be "Sautela". This is the reason why all these people keep calling her a "step sister". When the truth is she is a half sister.

My Hindi is not from any formal education as I am not Indian. So I don't actually know what the word "Sauten" really means, other than the fact that it is the word used to describe the "other women". So someone with a good knowledge of Hindi can hopefully clarify this meaning!!

Arre. The thing is there's no word for half-sibling in hindi.

Alsho, people who are not very familiar with English say step-siblings not knowing the word half-siblings.

Earlier, even I used to think siblings not having the same mother and father are steps and not halves.

Was I very confusing? 😆

Thanks guys!

It makes sense now...Saut means the other woman so I guess that's the right word in Hindi and punjabi...by my issue is that the English subtitles should say half siblings...so that the rest of us aren't left confused.

I know, it confused me too. They are blood related since they have the same father but that still makes them half siblings but the CVs make it seem like they are related even though they are.
