BTW i disagree on the fact tat desi audience liking only stereotype serials. If u chk the DD shows which aired in the 90s none of them were saas bahu nonsense & even in those times ppl embraced different, hatke shows like Shitij, Farman, Kashish, Buniyaad, Nukkad, Hum Log etc.

So no its not the fault of the audience but lack of talent & creativity by the show makers!

i ppped today 😛

Let me explain. I didn't say that desi audience only likes stereotype serials. I said the lowest common denominator in every serial is the stereotypical sas-bahu content - just like lowest common denominator in western shows is gratuitous sex and nudity. bottomline - it sells.

desi's are not a single clump of people - there are layers of people from the very rich to the very poor, from the very educated to the very illiterate, from the well traveled to the one who's not gone beyond Birpur. you cannot create a show that feeds this gamut.

you have to create a show that hits the demography you want to reach. What is the demography/type of viewers RangRasiya is trying to reach? The urban, suburban, rural or somewhere in between? A woman who works as a CEO of a company might not appreciate RR as a high form of art, but she might tolerate it for her mother in law's sake. An urban young man fed with Sienfeld and HBO shows may even cringe at RR. The romantic young girl finds her fantasies being played out in RR. RR cannot satisfy all these people at once. So it has to satisfy the one who controls the remote - the mother in law. And what does mother in law prefer between RR and YRK? does this mean all desis like YRK? no! This is what I meant the lowest common denominator.

these are just examples and in no way implies that all mothers in law like sas-bahu or that women CEOs cannot enjoy RR.

Oh, the show makers make enough money even with crappiest of fare. They get paid upfront per episode or block of episodes with a nice margin - so they are not sweating the tRP story. and the Ads keep coming to the big GECs because ADmakers want to use the reach of big GECs - so the GECs are happy.

bottomline - its not that desi like bad soaps or that there is no creativity. the biggest finding is that there is NO INCENTIVE to experiment or change.
