Nice topic to mull about...

I have seen my Dad who was in a government job before he retired and I have been working in the private sector for some years now

Tho' my father never had to worry about being fired but the kind of pressures and insecurities he had to face were probably more than I have to in the private sector.

These were some of his worries:
1) Political interference: There were calls at home all the time from MLAs or ministers either for "sifarish" to give someone a job or to give a contract to a particular person. You had to personally attend to any visiting politician to your area so I remember my father ofetn coming home late coz he was waiting for some or the other minister saahib to arrive from Delhi and the train got delayed

2) Departmental hierarchy: When the boss and his family visited it was the personal duty of you and your family to entertain the clan. You had to have them over for dinner, and we as kids would have to suffer the comapny of the Boss's kids and my mom had to chit chat with the Boss's wife

The politicians, if they were not happy with an official of his area could have him transferred in a bit...and the worst fear of any govt employee was to get transferred to a tribal area which had no basic amenities like schools. The boss had power over your CR ( confidential report) which would decide whether you would get promoted or not

I think I am better off...I work in an environment where performance ususally pays . I have the security of a large job market so if I feel I am not getting my due I can easily switch jobs...

I think we stereotype all govt. employees as the the babu ( the lazy clerk) who whiles away his time and is always taking bribes. But there are people there who are competent and who have to perform under constraints in govt jobs. The people in private sectors are more secure than their govt. sector counterparts in more ways than one!

Sorry for the rambling! 😉
