Walima doesnot mean announcing the consummation. According to sunnah nikkah is done in a very simple way in a mosque. No guest are invited in the nikkah ceremony only witnesses are present at the ceremony. After nikkah groom family goes to their home and bride's family send the bride to the groom house. So baiscally walima is to annouce that we are husband and wife now.

I think the Walima being SUNNAT explains it very clearly!
Sunnat is NOT compulsory/necessary... If it is within yr means u do a walima.

So y was Aaliyah saying their nikah wud be incomplete w/out performing the walima?

There's many that have their wedding and walima on the same day.
