Chapter 31
Next morning MC was very busy yet the friendly atmosphere which had welcomed Maan the first time was still present. He noticed how this time none of the workers paid him much attention. They were too busy for once and second they remembered how Geet had told them to be confident and proud.
Maan knocked on the door and waited.
"Come in." Geet was looking into some papers of hers and raised her head as the guest did not utter a word.
"Mr Khurana, what a pleasure." It wasn't and her tone made it clear. Maan took the flowers he had in his hand and gave them to Geet. She took them even if a little bit reluctantly. She hadn't expected that.
"I came here to apologize for my words, Miss...Mrs Mishra. I did not mean to..."
"I know you didn't mean to, but you see it is not important what you intend but what happens at the end." Maan nodded. Geet pointed towards the chair and Maan sat. Geet called Muskaan and asked for two cups of coffee, black and no sugar. Muskaan came in and was a little worried seeing Maan there. Where ever he turned up there was trouble, especially in MC.
"Muskaan, didn't I ask you for two cups of coffee?" Geet looked at the juice.
"Yes didi, but you already had two cups today and Adi bhaiya has given me strict instructions not to give you anymore."
Geet sighed shaking her head.
"Thanks Muskaan, you can go now." Maan listened to the conversation with interest.
"She calls you didi?"
"Yes she does, I asked her to."
"Why?" Geet looked at Maan for a long time and chose not to answer that question.
"Well Mr Khurana, I hope you will understand that sometimes the most sincere sorry does not help. Sohan is a very sensitive point to me and your words are still hurting me. But I will think about it and let you know if I can consider forgiving you." She continued with her work and Maan got the hint that it was time for him to leave.
Back at KC Maan was in trouble. The sheets of paper were not giving him good news. KC had made a big loss in a small time. Investors had backed off and clients were not there anymore. The future of KC was clear and what it showed was Maan's biggest nightmare. KC was his dream, everything he had worked for. Dev and he were sitting in the office. They were silent. The only option to save KC was to join hands with another company but none would be interested now. Maybe MC? But both did not want to say this aloud. After a long time of keeping quiet Dev said:
"Bro, I think we should put forward a proposal to Geet."
"Proposal? We are in no position to make any sort of proposal; all we can do is ask her. I doubt she will accept it though. What profit will she make by joining hands with KC? I will not accept a fusion or a complete take over; if that was the case I could simply sell KC. I need a partnership but again I am in no position to make any demands." Maan was frustrated to the core now.
"Still, there is no harm in asking is there? She might be professional enough to allow us a major hand in handling KC."
Geet had called in a meeting. Adi, Vicky, Muskaan, and all the heads of department were present.
"I have received a letter from KC today. They want us to join hands with them, like a partnership. Considering MC's current progress I see no reason to agree but I would like to know your opinion on this." She looked around.
"If I may say so, KC is in a position where it will close down if we don't agree and if Mr Khurana is really interested in keeping the company alive he will have to accept out terms and conditions. This in turns means we can run KC. We should not forget that it used to be very successful, just as MC before its downfall." Someone said.
"Ok, but I am interested in our profit rather than KC's loss. We have a lot to do in MC already and I don't know if we could handle KC, too" Geet replied.
"Yes, but how about we let Maan Khurana run the company under us? We will have the say."
"He won't do it, he is way too proud" Adi said quickly.
"He doesn't have a choice. Either he listens to us or chooses another company."
"Can I say something, please?" Muskaan raised her hand slowly. Geet nodded.
"KC is doing pretty badly now but shouldn't we think of it the same way we thought about MC? There were a lot of people who would have lost their jobs if Geet wouldn't have taken charge of MC."
"I agree. KC is loosing a lot of employees who can afford to swap jobs, yet there are people who are very much dependant on KC. But why should we think about them and not us?" Geet thought loudly.
"Because Geet, you are NOT Maan Singh Khurana. You always put people before profit and that is one secret to your success. Maan has put success always before everything else and now he has nothing left." Vicky said.
"He might be pretty ruthless at times but he is still good in his work. We shouldn't forget that no matter what his methods of working are he managed to get KC to a position which no other company had managed before." Adi tried to defend Maan. He was aware that KC was Maan's dream. Maan had on multiple occasions told him so. The reason he was so ruthless towards people and emotions was that it hindered him to think straight when it came to business. Adi kept this thought to himself though; it was not a good idea of telling this to others.
"I agree Adi. Muskaan is right and so is Vicky. A partnership is out of the question since KC has nothing much to offer to us. So it will be either a fusion or a takeover." Geet made a thinking face.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I need some time to think on this. Thank you for your time." They all thanked her in return and got up.
"Muskaan, can you please stay back?" She did.
"Please call KC and make an appointment with the MD and Executive MD here at MC for Saturday after lunch." Vicky stopped. Muskaan left and Vicky asked Geet:
"You want to talk to them?"
"Yes, I need to be certain as to what they want. We both know Maan won't agree for a complete take over since he could easily sell the company and I doubt he will agree for a fusion. After all I will have a major part of KC in that way. Still, I have to talk to him."
"You want me to be there, too?"
"Of course, I am not thinking of you as his brother but as my Executive MD. Both you and Adi will need to be there." Vicky nodded and left.
"I know I am putting you and Adi into a difficult situation. Both of you know Maan very well and even though you might not admit it you will not wish him to loose KC completely." Geet said to herself when she was all alone again.
As Maan and Dev entered MC they saw most MC employees leaving.
"Where are they going bro?" Dev asked. Maan shrugged. His mind was occupied with the coming meeting and he had no interest of diverting his attention. Muskaan showed them the conference room and left for home. She had asked if she should stay back just in case but Geet refused.
"Welcome Mr Khurana and Mr Khurana." Geet had a small smile on her face as she shook hands with both brothers. Adi and Vicky greeted them briefly and they sat to talk.
"Ok first things first, I want to know very clearly what you both are expecting from this meeting. I do not like to talk around the bush and we had no time to waste either."
"We want a partnership. KC is losing clients and investors and if we do not have a partner company who can initially help us out we will have to close down."
"I am not willing to do a partnership."
"Why?"
"I have no benefit from doing so. KC is down and by trying to bring it back up, I will make losses." Maan and Dev looked at her. She was right.
"Geet has thought about a take over..." Adi started.
"NO" Maan said quickly and loudly.
"Let me finish please" Adi tried again.
"If we do a take over but only have a part share in KC, it will still be run by you, and just the profit will be shared. You will receive all financial help that is required and clients, too as a matter of fact."
"How much share are we talking about?" Dev asked.
"60%"
"Too much, we can't do about anything above 40%"
"We will not make much profit if we don't go above that." There was a pause.
"How about a fusion then?" Vicky asked.
"With what terms?" Maan asked.
"MC will remain fully under my control just as it is now. To make it clear we are not talking about MC but ONLY about KC. You will run KC as MD. I will permit you to take..., well we can decide on the share later. Point though is that I will have a veto right on all decisions. Plus, I will be joint MD of KC. That means in other terms that I will be boss just as much as you will be Mr Khurana."
"You must be joking." He said before he could stop himself.
"Absolutely not. Say what, I will let you keep all profit. This seems much better. KC will be yours, you will run it, you will keep all profit, but...but I will have a right to veto your decisions and make mine, I will in other words be your boss when time requires it." Maan clenched his jaw, she was playing with him.
Dev looked at Maan.
"Mrs Mishra, allow me to say this but is this proposal based professional or personal profit?" Dev asked. Even Adi and Vicky looked at her. Geet and Maan didn't take their eyes off each other.
"Let's just say that it will be professional and personal for both. Both will profit in one way or the other but who profits most, only time can tell." She leaned against her chair and said again:
"This is the only proposal I am ready to accept. You will get what you want and I will what I want. Take as much time as you need to decide. I will wait for your answer."
