GUJARATI WEDDING RITUALS

Gujrati wedding ceremony is full of several traditional rituals and customs which hold a deep meaning and regard for the Gujarati families. Performed with great pomp and show, the Gujarati Wedding Ceremonies are vibrant and amusing.

The various sequence of events are as follows:-

Ponkvu

The arrival of Saras, Danny and Kusum with baraat will be Ponkvu. Saras will be welcomed by Guniyal with aarti. She will also playfully try to grab his nose at the entrance.

Jaimala

Jaimala in a Gujrati wedding is performed twice.
First time, Saras will be on a higher platform than Kumud, while, the second time, they will be at an equal level.

Madhuparka

In the Madhuparka ceremony, Saras's feet will be washed. Also, he will be given honey and milk to drink as a token of love. While this ceremony is going on, Kumari and Kusum will try to steal his shoes.

Kanya Agamana

Kanya Agamana is the beginning of the marriage on the serious note with the traditional customs and rituals solemnized by a Pundit. Kumud will be brought to the mandap by her mama.

At the Mandap, there will be an antarpaat (curtain) to separate her from Saras. As the Pundit begins chanting the mantras, the antarpaat will be lowered and Saras and Kumud will exchange garlands in front of the sacred fire.

Kanya Daan

In this ceremony, VC will wash Saras's feet and give Kumud's hand to him in the hope that he will take good care of her.

Hasta Milap

It will involve the tying of the Saras's shawl to Kumud's sari. The tying of knot and the joined hands are symbolic of the meeting of two hearts and souls.

The priest will chant mantras and seek the blessings of Goddess Laxmi and Parvatiji for the couple.

Mangalpheras

Saras and Kumud will take 4 mangalpheras, representing Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.

Saptapadi

Saras and Kumud will take 7 steps together in this very important ritual.

Saras will help Kumud in touching seven betel nuts with her right toe, while both of them recite the seven vows for their commitment towards each other.

At each step of the Saptapadi, Saras will ask for support from his Kumud throughout his life.

Saubhagyavati Bhava

In this tradition, seven married women from Kumud's family will whisper good wishes and blessings in her right ear. They bless her to remain a Saubhagyavati throughout her life.

I am sure one of these 7 women will be Kalika. Satyanash, woh toh baddua hi degi!

Chero Pakaryo

In this Saras will tug Guniyal's saree as she passes through the mandap, as if he is askingfor gifts.

Then will come shubh ashirwad and finally bidai.

and then we should have the most important ritual of all

Suhaagraat

Sangeet and mehendi ceremony is going to be covered the most in sc. I am not sure how much time CVs will have for any other ritual then. Whatever may be the case I want samud to look fabulous.

this is similar to our tradition. madhuparka fil put shawl on grooms shoulder and offers panakam.
kanyaagmanam, kanyadaan, hastmailap, then bride and groom will be given white clothes then they tie the saree with the shawl, saptapadi, then tying knot.
we don't have pheras. thank you arshiji for this with the serial knowledge I thought all the NI marriages have saath pheras.

Beautiful. Thanks arshi.
The idea is to generate that bonding with different kinds of symbolism. Aided by the power of bed in mantras.
