CHAPTER 18

They all entered the house in a very somber mood. After Vickram s declaration he wanted to see his sister, they left not to long after. Sugni just sitting quietly, not sure what to do here, everyone was hurting. Coming home to be greeted with such devastating news, was heart wrenching. Looking at them as they went to visit Kuhu, her heart went out to them. Vickram's look of anguish as he asked his unconscious sister to come back to them, the tears that he cried, gently touching her face . . His mother looking down at her child; the beeping of the machines just adding to this feeling of loss. Sugni stood off in a corner, wanting to somehow comfort them but not sure how. Again, she felt like an intruder in this private moment, of sadness.

Vickram went into the study; Maaji went up to her room. Sugni contemplated going into the room and leaving them to be, but she could not, following her instinct she went into the study. She found him sitting on the couch by the window staring at a framed picture , lost in thought. As she got closer she realized it was of his sister and another man she knew was his brother by the picture in the hall way.

She rested her hand on his shoulder silently calling him out of his thoughts. He looked up at her briefly, his eyes red, then back at the picture in his hand. Silently she sat next to him, reaching out she held his hand.

" She was always smiling you know..." he said softly, sadly "Always happy...full of life...and Bhushan bhai saab, always the sensible one, the cautious one., always followed rules and did what was right..." his voice cracked..."Now he is gone...and she lying there helpless...how could this happen? How..." he said as he broke down "This is all my fault...I should have been here... None of this would have happened if I was here..." He lamented.

His anguish was heart wrenching for her. Leaning over she hugged him, "shhh...I know...I am soo sorry...so sorry..." She said quietly. , gently rubbing his back, offering comfort the only way she could think of, as he grieved for his loved ones. Her own eyes filling with tears at his pain. He kept on mumbling about it being his fault.

"It's not your fault..." She said but she did not think he was hearing her. She let go of him, as he went back to staring at the picture. She was at a loss on what to say here. There was nothing she could say really, after it occurred to her that maybe she to was responsible in part for this...after all the reason he was not here was because he was out there looking for her.

The depressing mood was interrupted by the ringing of the phone. Wiping his eyes Vickram got up to attend to the call., Getting up Sugni left the room slowly, going into the kitchen.

Maa Thakur was back from her room busy preparing lunch. Sugni offered to help.

"No beta, everything is prepared. Just have a seat..."

"I can help with the dishes"...she said

"There are no dishes...everything is done..."

"But Maaji..."

"Its ok..see the food is already cooking, everything is set..."

"you should have called me..." She said. Sugni sighed as she looked around the kitchen. Her mind heavy with the image of Vickram and his guilt.

"What's the matter Sugni..." Maa Thakur asked noticing her long face. She shook her head.

"No...I know something is wrong...what is it..." She said.

"It's just that ...it's hard to see him like that...hurting...I mean I can't imagine the pain he is in right now..." She said

"Oh...yes I know it is a lot for one person...especially when they were close...I know Vickram...he'll blame himself for this." Maa Thakur said.

"He is ...but he shouldn't ...I mean if it's any one's fault he was not here ...it would be mine..." She said

"What?" Godhavari said looking at her confused. "Why are you saying that...?"

"Well...the only reason he was not here was because he was out looking for me...and if it wasn't for the accident he would not be...he would be here...and..." she said.

"Hey...no...no..." Godavari said coming to stand in front of her. "Come here...Sit..." she said leading her to the kitchen table where they both sat.

"Listen to me...none of this was your fault...and it wasn't Vickram's either...what ever happened was fate, destiny , karma..." Sugni looked at Maa Thakur.

" You can't blame yourself for this. In fact I should thank you..."

"Thank me?" She asked.

"Yes...the only reason he is home again, is because of you, you brought him back..." She smiled slightly.

"I just hate seeing him like that..." Sugni said.

"I know...he will feel guilty. See Vickram is a fixer..." She explained. "He was always the one solving problems and taking charge...he took care of us...so much so we took him for granted..." She said ruefully. "And this news is hard for him right now, I had time to adjust and absorb the shock...he doesn't have that..."

"What do you mean?" Sugni asked.

"Well they will be back soon...in a few days. And they will pounce on any sign of weakness. He needs to be strong to face them..." She nodded.

"You can help him..." She said looking diredtly at her , almost expectantly.

"Me?...What can I do?" Sugni asked confused.

"Vickram's greatest strength and greatest weakness...is you Sugni. Now he needs you to be his strength now . And help him through this..." She said

"But I don't know..." She said looking at Maa Thakur, who was looking at Sugni with some strange sort of hope in her face. She swallowed.

"You love him?...even though you don't remember your past..."

"Yes..."

Maa Thakur smiled..."That's all you need ...just follow your heart..." She said

******\\\\\/////*****

Sugni pondered Maa Thakurs words for a long time. As she sat up in the room. Not sure what she could do , especially when it seemed like he locked every one outstaying in the study. He did not come out for lunch, and the tray they laid for him remained untouched. It was only on Maa Thakurs insistence she have lunch with her that she had something. Maa Thakur herself barely picked at her plate. They were both worried about Vickram. Everyone was in a somber mood. Lost in their own world...the whole atmosphere was one of morning and loss.

In the evening, again she ventured into the kitchen, where Maa Thakur again had everything under control.

Sugni again asked why she did not call her. "I need to keep myself busy...and this is how I do it...besides I got used to doing it all alone now..." She explained...

"Why don't you get him to come and eat...he has not come out of there since he went in this morning... I made his favorites...but he is not listening to me ..." she said sadly.

"Hmmm" She said as she went back to the study.

She opened the door, he was sitting there staring into space.

"Hey..." she said softly .

He turned to look at her. "Hey..."

"Dinner is ready...are you coming?" She asked..

He shook his head. "You go ahead. I am not hungry..." he said.

"You didn't have anything for the day...come on ...please..." she asked.

He closed his eyes and sighed. "Sugni I am sorry but I really am not in the mood...please go on..." He went back to staring.

Why did Maaji think she could do this? She wondered. She felt so inept right now. But she had to do something.
"Can I say something?" She asked. He looked at her and nodded. Moving further into the room, she took one of the chairs and placed it next to his. Moving slowly trying to gather her thoughts. She sat down looking at him. He observed her saying nothing. Taking a breath she tried.

"I know that this is a lot for anyone to take in. And I ...I can't imagine the kind of pain you must be feeling right now. And there is nothing I can say that can make any of this better , because there really isn't anything..." she stopped. He was looking at her silently. She did not want to make this worse. Feeling unsure of herself. "I know you feel guilty about not being here but you shouldn't, because it is not your fault... I mean...right now you have to be strong ...to face them..." She sighed...this was not going as smoothly as she thought..."I mean...not only them ...but Maaji...she spent all this time just waiting, her strength in the hope you would come back... And now that you are back. If she sees you breaking down now, she might lose that ." She looked at him. "You know once, one of the girls told me in front of them you be strong, no matter how much it hurts...you can break down by yourself but in front of them don't let it show..." She sighed, closing her eyes...She was rambling... "I am sorry I am not making any sense am I? This is going wrong." She shook her head.

"No...you're making perfect sense...I understand what you're saying ..." He said quietly.

"You do?"

He nodded. "You're right...this is not the time to be weak..." He blinked as his voice cracked..."It's just so..."

"I know...I know..." She said reaching over to hold his hand. They stayed quite for a moment.

"You Know...Maaji has been busy in the kitchen...making your favorites, but she hardly touched her lunch...and she won't have dinner if you don't come out...'

"Ok...let's go then..." he said taking a deep breath , he stood up. She did to putting back her chair in it's place.

"Sugni..." he said softly.

"yes?..." she looked at him

"Thank you..."

She hugged him, which he returned lightly. "I love you..." She said "it'll get better...you have to believe that..." She said. She felt him nodded.

She pulled back and looked at him. Taking his hand she said..."Ready?"

"Yeah lets go..." He said . They stepped out the study.

They found the table was set, but his mother was no where around. Looking around they spotted her sitting in the darkened hall way. They looked at each other. Then Vickram went to her.

"Maa...come on let's eat .." He said

She blinked her tears away as she looked at him, trying to smile.

"Finally you came out..." She said.

"I had to ...I heard you made my favorite foods..."

"I did...' She got up as she led the way into the dining room, telling him what she prepared.

Each one was trying to be strong for the other, to look past their hurt and pain to comfort the other. As they got the the table, before Sugni could Maa Thakur was serving Vickram the food. She observed quietly, not wanting to intrude on the moment between them.

There was six months of distance between them, six months of missing being worried about and praying for her son...as she looked on she wondered if her mother was alive would she get the same greeting...he did mention she had aunt, her mother figure. Maybe she was this worried about her as well. However due to the circumstances in the house right now, she did not think it was the right time to go digging into that. Right now Vickram and Maaji needed her and she would give them her full attention in whatever way she could.

Dinner conversation was filled with questions Vickram had about the goings on about the house , the servants, and catching up on what was happening in the past months.

"Well first thing tomorrow ...I will contact Rattu and see about getting some of the workers back here...maybe the old ones will come back..."

"They are willing...but they were afraid of her, the house keepers, the gardener, the drivers...she fired those poor people , because she thought they were to loyal to me...I tried to stop her...but one day after work...some of men she hired, beat up Ramu and told him not to come back. I really did not want them dragged in the middle...now they are picking up jobs here and there where ever they can find it...its hard because they have families to see about...but that does not matter to them..." She shook her head in disgust.

"It will now..." He said. She nodded.

After dinner, Vickram left them to go back to the study. As Sugni and Godavari cleared the dishes and straightened the kitchen.

"Thank you Sugni...I knew you could do it..." Maa Thakur said

"I did not do anything Maa ji...just talked to him..."

"And he listened...that's all that is needed."

"I just hope everything goes right now...that Kuhu recovers...and everything else if there is anything I can do I'll do it."

She nodded.
" I am tired beta...I think I am going to rest..."

"Ok..Maaji."

Going upstairs to take a shower , she came back down to check on Vickram. He was nose deep in papers.

"hey'...she said... "What's all this?" She asked noting all the files he had on the desk. A marked difference from the clear desk she saw before.

He leaned back and looked at her. "They going to be here soon, and I need to see just how much damage was done, before they get here. You were right...they can't see me weak...and they won't...sheeesh...look at this checks for $5000...for pens?...huh...accounts I have never heard about...land deals...she was just having a good old time here I see." He said, the more he read ... the angrier he got.

"Can you fix it?..." she asked.

"Yes...it'll take some time to unravel this mess...She thinks she is smart...she has no clue how to run this business. Or how we do things! " he said. On some level he was amazed by Suman audacity...to do this.

"I am not worried about this...my real worry is Kuhu..."

"She will pull through...we will all pray for her..." She said.

"Yeah..."

"Can I help here? I mean I don't know much about this but maybe..."

"No..its just a lot of reading...I won't be able to take action until Monday. Which is two days away. If I am lucky,,I can get on to my lawyer tomorrow to start something...Why don't you go get some rest. I'll be a while here."

"You sure...I can sit with you...maybe get you some coffee"

"No I'll be fine.." he said. "Go on...you must be tired to after today..."

"Ok..." She said as she left him.

Going upstairs she tried to rest , thoughts running through her head about all that had happened. It was hard to believe they had only been back one day...but that was all one short day and so much had happened. To distract her mind for a moment she turned on the TV in the corner as she thought to wait up for him. However as the hours past and sleep took over he still had not come upstairs.

CHAPTER 19

She awoke the next morning to find the other side of the bed still made up. He did not come up to sleep. Getting up she quickly showered and changed and she went down stairs. Going to the study she opened the door to find him, lying on the couch with a file on his chest.

"ohh ...poor thing..." She said , closing the door softly.

Going into the kitchen she was not surprised to see Maa Thakur there. Looking at the clock on the wall it told her it was a quarter to seven.

"Good morning Maaji..."

"Morning beta..." She said as she turned to stove off under the pot she was stirring. "just in time breakfast is ready."
She looked around, again everything was prepared, not a dish in the sink. Sugni wondered what time did Maa Thakur get up to prepare all this. She sighed disappointed she was not able to help her.

"is Vickram getting ready? " she asked.

"No... he was working late catching up ...he fell asleep in the study...when I looked he was still asleep..." She said.

"Ahh I see..." She said. Going over she took a tea cup pouring a cup of tea. "well he is going to need this then...whenever he works late na the first thing he wants is my special tea..." She said as she set the tray.

"But he is still asleep.." Sugni told her.

Maa Thakur looked at the clock. "No he's awake...no matter how tired he is he never sleeps past seven.." she said knowingly.

"Oh..." Sugni said. She felt at a loss here standing awkwardly twiddling her thumbs while Maa Thakur did it all. It was not sitting well with her.

"Why don't you take this to Vickram..." Maa Thakur said coming to her with the tray.

"ok.." She said.

Taking the tray Sugni made her way back to the study, wondering about a way to get Maa Thakur to get her to help. She opened the door and found him gone. Deciding to check upstairs she went up the stairs.
She opened the door, entering the room and froze. Standing in front of the mirror was Vickram brushing his hair. He looked...he looked so different from the man who walked into Amma's. looking at the reflection.
"Oh My God ...Thakur Mallick!" she gasped.

Vickram stopped at her exclamation, as he noticed her standing behind him, with the tray in her hand staring at him wide eyed.. looking shocked . His hand gripped the hair brush as he closed his eyes. Dear God, she remembered. Now of all times.

Slowly he turned around as he said..."What did you say?" ...He waited a few moments but she still had not moved. "Su- Sugni?"

She blinked. "haai La.!" She said as she moved to rest the tray on the side table. Taking the cup she handed it to him. With a big smile on her face. She walked around him like she was carrying out an inspection. "You look so...wow. " She said stopping in front of him. "You shaved...haai... and this suite...Ohhh So handsome..." Making a O.K sign with her hand she said. "You clean up well...you look so different!"

"Ahh thank you!" Vickram said. His face getting a bit red under her scrutiny. He sat on the bed. Taking a sip of his tea. Just what he needed . He thought.

She sat beside him still looking at him in amazement. He was beginning to feel self conscious.

"What ?"

"Nothing...its just you look so different from Banaras...I mean it's like two different people. I like it ." She said. She laughed ..."your face is red...are you blushing?'

"Nooo..." he said , taking another sip to hide his embarrassment. It used to be he was the one paying her compliments...it was weird being on the other side of that. He frowned...when he remembered her reaction to him when she came in.

"Um...What did you say. When you came in?" He asked

"Hmm? What?' She asked .

"When you walked in you said..."

"Oh." She blinked as she remembered..."Ohh I said ...I said Thakur Mallick..." She blinked as she contemplated that...

"Hmm...yes...why did you say that? " He asked.

"I don't know , it's just when I saw you it felt right..." She looked at him for a moment, staring at his face..."You are him...Thakur Mallick...are'nt you...Oh my God!" She breath never taking her eyes of off his face.

"You remember?" he asked just as softly.

"No...but that name. When I got up from hospital...they told me I kept mumbling that name...that was you?"
He nodded.

"Oh..wow..." She shook her head slightly..."I don't remember anything else..."

"It's ok...this is how you knew me from before...maybe its subconscious..."

"Ohh I get it...so you don't normally look scruffy..."

He chuckled at that . "Normally no... and it's time to get back to that, as someone advised me..."

"Hmmm. I good advice." She said. "We better hurry up...Maaji is probably waiting downstairs...Ohhh I can't wait for her to see you.!!!"

\\\\\\\\\*******////////

Maaji was pleased to see Vickram back in his old form. She was not as expressive as Sugni was on seeing him, but it warmed her heart seeing him looking like the take charge and no nonsense Vickram he was before.
Soon after breakfast, Rattu came with some people . Some of them used to work in the haveli before, some were new faces.

"Maa...you see who you need around here...and we'll hire them. " He told Said turning to thee handful of people. "First of all I know there has been a lot going around here...and I am sorry to those who was let go. Rest assured this time your jobs will be safe..." he said to them as they came into the hall way.

Rattu was one of the workers that was allowed to stay on because his job was mostly on the fields. However his loyalty lay with Vickram as he gave him a tour of the lands and what was happening in his absence. Vickram had another busy day ...getting on to his lawyers and explaining it all to him.

Slowly, little by little the atmosphere in the haveli changed. Now that workers were back in the haveli, parts of the place that had been neglected was being cared for, cleaned and dusted after months. Windows were opened curtains changed. Fresh air was passing through again giving new life to the place.

Sugni looked on in awe, at Maa Thakur who seemed in her element , giving orders and over seeing everything. However, after a while she began feeling useless.

When she tried to help the servants, Ma Thakur stopped her telling her they would. When she tried to give orders to them on what to do...Maa Thakur would change the direction and make them do it another way. When she tried to help in the kitchen...she was told "it was under control...and she should rest."

It dawned on her that she was being treated more like a house guest than a daughter in law. But then given that all of these problems was because of a daughter in law...maybe Maa Thakur did not really trust her yet.

Even Vickram it seem did not need her, because before she could get him anything, Maa Thakur was there, with his favorite food, or he did not like his tea with so much milk...most she did was call him for dinner ..or take this to him. Even at the dining table she Maa thkur would step in and fix his plate before she could.

She tried desperately to quell the twinge of jealously she felt. She reminded herself that she was his mother..and he was not home for so long. But between him being busy with work, and the cleaning of the haveli...she hardly saw him.

This was not how she envisioned being a wife would be like. By Monday she was at her wits end with pure boredom. She walked into the study where Vickram was busy as usual and sat down, she sighed loudly. He looked up from the papers he was reading.

"What's the matter?" he asked.

"Maaji na...she won't let me help...no matter how much I tried..."

"What?"

Getting up she went over and sat at the edge of his desk.."every time I try to help her cook..."It Ok Sugni ..its under control' , you don't need to do that Sugni ...they will see about it...'no Sugni please leave that".." She said in an imitation of Maa Thakur that made him laugh.

"Well that is Maa for you...very particular about her kitchen...she does not like strangers in her kitchen..."

"But I am not a stranger..." She said softly.

He leaned back and looked at her.

"No...you're not..but you see she is funny that way...she'll allow you but at her pace." He said.

"But I am bored doing nothing...and it feels weird her doing everything. Can't you talk to her? ...to let me help."

"No...she'll rip my head off." He laughed at her pout. "just relax.."

She let out a frustrated sigh as she jumped off his desk..."That's all I've been doing..."

Vickram looked at her not sure what to tell her. He knew his mother liked to run things her way, he also knew that the reason she was probably not allowing her in the kitchen was because she did not really trust her. It wasn't like she did before. She may have consented to their relationship , and accepted that they were married, but on some level she never really accepted Sugni as her daughter in law.

"Well why don't you read a book..there are lots in here..." he said

She turned and gave him a look of disbelief. Obviously not the solution she wanted to her problem. He shrugged. She rolled her eyes and sighed going over to the shelved to inspect them.

have you read all of these?" She asked. Some of these things were huge, she thought.

"Yeah.." he said.

She passed her hands over the shelves..."ewww..dusty.." She said. ..."Hmmm..be right back..."

She left only to return a short while later with a small water bucket, a dust cloth and other stuff.

"What are you going to do?" He asked.

"Ahhh dance...clean the dusty old shelves obviously..."

"Sugni.."

She looked at him sternly as she wagged a finger in his direction..."If you say I don't have to do this I swear I will scream.." He raised his eyebrows at her serious face.

"Ok then...as you wish..." he complied.

He went back to his papers as she began clearing off the shelves and dusting them and repacking them It was amusing watching her read some of the titles of some of the books "Ma---maa What?...how in the world you pronounce this?" She asked looking at a particular book. "Mawrdew Czgowchwz"

"Mardu Gorgeous" He said. Pronouncing it perfectly

"Huh?...this person wrote a book..he can't spell..." She declared as she placed it back.

"It's called creativity Sugni...the tiltle stands for a symbol of what the book is about.."

"Hmmm..."

"Ohh this one about food..." she said "You cook?" She asked holding the book for him to see.
"That was Kuhu's..." He said softly looking at it.

"Ohh...I am sorry.."she said gently dusting it. She moved to place it back. She quickly and quietly packed back the books on the clean shelf.

Coming over to the desk , she sat . "You Ok?'

"Yeah..." He said nodding.

"So have you thought about what you going to do when they come back?" She asked after a while.
It was Monday and according to Maa Thakur Suman was supposed to be back on Monday.

"No..." He said leaning forward resting his chin on his hands. "I can't think about it because it will just send me mad...but I'll tell you this much ...she is going to have one nasty surprise when she finds she is not as powerful as she thinks. "They won't get away with what they did...that I assure you...Jwala and Digvijai...they will pay for Kuhu's condition..."

"They sound dangerous..." Sugni said worriedly.

"No they are leeches that's what they are... " he said with a look of anger crossing his face.

"hmmm"

"What are you doing?" Maa Thakur said as she came in.

Sugni jumped of the desk . looking at the floor , feeling like she was caught doing something she should not be.

"What is all this.? She asked. Pointing at the cleaning utensils...

"I was just dusting off the shelves..." She said.

You shouldn't the curtains still needs to be changed in here and the cob webbing needs to be done...it'll just get dusty again...Tara is going to start on it tomorrow...this is just double work."

" I was just..."

"Sugni I told you ..it'll be taken care of...don't worry about it..."

"But Maa ji.." She stopped when Vickram placed his hand on her shoulder and shook his head.

"Maa...I know you like over seeing these things alone...Sugni just wants to help..."

"But Beta..."

"Maa she is a part of this family now. Please..." She sighed as she looked at him.

"Fine..you can help Tara in here tomorrow...you are responsible for making sure she does a good job."

"Yes Maaji thank you..." Sugni said smiling.

"Hmmm... Tara..." She called as a young woman came in..." Yes Mallkin?..."

"Remove those things please...and follow me after."

"Yes Ma'am..."

Turning she left. Sugni looked at Vickram "Is she mad at me?"

"Oh No..not at all ..." he said smiling.

"What?"

"Its good to see her acting more like her old self ..." He said.

Sugni's eyes bulged. That was her normal self. Haai Sita miya. She gulped. She was not to sure how she could handle Maa Thakur like this. Up until now she seemed quite and sweet.

All of a sudden there was an god awful shriek coming from the hall way, catching their attention.

"What the hell is going on in here...What are all these people doing in MY HOUSE... THAT OLD WOMAN... MAAAJI...MAAA... HEY OLD LADY...!"

Sugni looked at Vickram. She saw that look before. In Banaras ...right before he beat Amma's men to a pulp... Ohh boy it told her all she needed to know.

Suman was home.
