Chapter 15
(Meanwhile in Mawhari...)

"That is disgusting ! you people are mad!" Godavari said looking at the three people sitting in her living room. She was doing her best to keep her composure and look like the strong thakurine she was once, but on her inside she was scared. But she know how to hide it well.

"Digvijay...that is your wife..have you no shame...no heart... no humanity left, Jwala that is your daughter in law, you begged for my blessing , the unite the two families and now you ...you are threatning to..." She closed her eyes not even able to repeat what he just said...

"And Suman...Just six months since Bhushan died, and your true colors came out. My God I am surrounded by snakes. If Vickram was here..."

"Vickram abandoned you Maaji and this haveli... he is nowhere to be found. He went crazy behind that two bit bedni... Obviously he could not care less about you or your condition because he has not even called to ask how you are doing...Who knows he may even be Dea...

"SUMAN... Shut your mouth!... Vickram is alive and well. And he will be back...I know it." They all laughed at her like she told a joke.
"Maaji Maaji maaji..." Suman said getting up from her chair and walking over to her... "I know you have been hanging on to your hopes, but really we can't just leave it like this. It is time to admit the truth Maaji...both your sons turned out to be useless and frankly brainless. And the time has come for some sensible people to take over...so please...sign the papers, don't waste any more time." She said placing the document in front of her on the table , brandishing a pen in front of her face." Godavari, turned her head away. She would not succumb to the pressure .

Suman let out an exasperated sigh. "Do you want another funeral? Is that what you are telling us Maaji..? Really?" Suman said in a steely voice.

"Now ..now ..now Suman...calm down..." Jwala said in a deceptively sweet voice. "I mean all of this was rather sudden and I think she needs time to think and make a proper decision. Bhabhiji..." he said "what are you holding this on for, you know as well as we do HE is not coming back. So we just want to make sure that business and daily function of this house keeps on going well, and without a proper person to steer the business you know it will go to ruin...why can't you understand that?" he asked her .

She lifted her head defiantly , not bothering to answer him.

"Fine Maaji...You know we have to leave... you have until Monday when we return to make your final decision. Are you going to sign that paper and give full running of the business and property to me or are you going to hold on to your stubbornness and loose the only child you have left ...it's in your hands. We should go before we miss our plane." Suman said .
Godavari looked at the three of them left, again on another expensive weekend trip to some foreign country. Suman's new hobby and way of spending the family's wealth.

She looked around at the big empty house, that once was a bustling place. It now seemed like a lonely creepy mansion. She looked at the papers that were laid on the table, the threat in her head. She had to choose one...what to do...
Now that she was alone she allowed herself to break down and cry. Getting up she went over to the wall where there hung a picture that was once her loving family, flanked by her two sons, embraced by her daughter. They all looked happy. Today one son was dead, one son was missing and her daughter...Oh God...

. When she thought things could not get any worse, it did a mere month after Bhushan's death, Suman changed her colors form a quite daughter - in - law, to a cunning down right snake. She began taking over, removing the servants replacing them with temporary workers, selling off land and crops below the normal prices, striking deals with some shady people to do land rentals. Using Jwala and his son secretly to assist her. When Godavari tried to step in she came with some papers, saying that ,her husband left everything in his name to her , and that since there was no one else to make decisions she was doing the needful.

Godavari tried to fight her, but was stopped when her daughter came under threat from Digvijay, the man who once promised to love and protect her daughter began treating her like dirt, not wanting to see her child suffer she was forced to stay quite.

Every day she prayed that Vickram would return and straighten things out, but each day things got more and more bleak. Suman with her new found power was on a high, spending money widly with expensive trips carrying on with her toy boy, and just throwing her weight around.

Then two months ago tragedy struck again, after a nasty fight with Digvijay, Kuhu called her to tell her she was coming over , however before she could get to the haveli, her car met with an accident running into a truck. The accident left her in a coma and on life support. The doctors saying there was not much that can be done for her...
To say Godavari was devastated was an understatement, , her spirit died a little each time she saw her baby girl lying on that bed life less. And now ...now these scoundrels was using this for their own gain. Threathening to take her off life support if she did not sign over Vickrams Share of the property to them.

Digvijai having no remorse in telling her as husband he had the right to make that decision , not to let his wife "suffer" like that.
Going into the small mandir she sat as she lit one of the diya. She clasped her hands as she broke down.

""What has become of my family, dear Lord!' She cried dejectedly " Hey Devi Maa...my strength is gone, I can't fight no more...my daughter's life is in your hands, my son is lost, you took the other one. ...I don't know what my family did to be punished like this. Please forgive us, help us. " As she closed her eyes laying all her fears in prayer, the only solace she had.
She had no idea how long she stayed like that, until suddenly there was a feeling a calmness in her soul that was missing for a long while now. In front her eyes floated the face of a smiling Vickram and a laughing Kahu. And she knew in that moment her prayers were answered. They would be alright...Her son was coming back!
"Thank you!" She said as she finally got up making her way to her room. She fell asleep feeling much more peaceful than she had in a long long time!

"How do I look?" Sugni asked looking at her self in the mirror. She felt funny and nervous wearing a sari for the first time that she could remember. But Amma insisted saying all married women wear them. All the girls pitched in and helped to get her ready for her send off.

"you look stunning!." Amma said looking at her. "Ohh we will miss you around here." She said The rest of the girls nodded.
Each in turn coming to hug her and wish her the best. Some were teary eyed , some were joking, some were in their fashion giving raunchy advice that made her blush red.

"Stop it girls...leave her alone!" Amma said. "you just take care of yourself ok...now lets go down stairs Vickram Babu is waitng." She said. Sugni nodded. She hardly saw him since they got here last night. She was so tired she fell asleep , and when she woke up she was over taken by the girls who said they wanted to make her look special for her husband.
Even thinking that word felt unreal. She was married. To Vickram.. She wondered when would she wake up form this dream, and hoped that she did not. She came down the steps and there he was. Obviously he showered and changed to sitting on the sofa with his duffle bag to his side.

"Wow" he said as he saw her. Looking mesmerized by her. She blushed looking at the floor . For some reason feeling shy.
"you look beautiful! " he said as she approached.

"yes she dose " Amma said. "Well this is it...I guess. And I am sorry for all the trouble that I gave you before, I hope you will forgive me."

Vickram shook his head dismissing her earlier behavior. "No ...No...it's Ok " he said.
"Bunty?" She said motioning for him, as he stepped forward and took Vickram's bag and Sugni's suitcase. Vickram looked at her confused.

"Here to Mawhari is a long way , and I don't think using public transport will be comfortable. You can use my car.." She said asshe led them outside. Taking the keys from Bunty she handed it to Vickram.

"Amma you did not have to..."

"I know I wanted to...return it when you get back..." she said

"I will.." he said accepting the keys . "thank you..'

"You're welcome...Just take care of her. She is your responsibility now." She said going over to Sugni. And hugging her.

"I will..."

"Amma " Sugni said tearfully. She was leaving her the one mother figure she had since the last six months.

"Hey...don't cry...or else you will make me cry...crazy..." Amma said looking at her. " I don't say this often but I will say this now. I was wrong about him. One thing I am sure about beti, he dose love you...from here. " he said touching her heart. "Just remember that. In the future Ok?" she said cryptically.

"Ok." Sugni said.

After a last rounds of good bye they finally set of , Sugni stuck her head out the window and waved good bye to the bunch of people who had been only recognition in the last few months...

\\\\\\******//////

"What are we doing here?" She asked curiously as he pulled into the parking lot of the hospital a few minutes later.
"I think we need to inform your Doctor that you are leaving and you need to get some more medicine since the last set was lost. It would be good to get a final checkup before the long trip."

"But I feel fine" She said, pouting she hated hospitals.

"I know but just to be safe ok..." He said. She let out a heavy sigh, made a disgusted face and nodded grudgingly. He chuckled as he got out she followed him. When they got into Dr. Nagar's office he looked at them in surprised.

Taking in Sugni's attire, the sindoor on her forehead he said. "Are you...?" he said looking at them. She nodded.
"Um..Well congratulations to you both.." he said smiling.

"Thank you!" she said softly, she could not stop the smile from spreading across her lips.

"So what brings you two here?" he asked as they took seats around his desk.

"Well Dr. we are about to make the laong trip to Mawhari and I thought she should get a check up, also her meds were misplaced and I think she would need some more."

"hmm..I see. Do you have a Dr. in Mawhari?" He asked.

"We'll find one." Vickram said.

"Ok..." he said getting up and doing some routine checks on her. "Here is what I'll do , I know Mahari does not have advanced technologies like here, so well run some test, MRI's , scans etc. And give you the results so it will be easy for the Doctor to follow up on her. I will also give her a fresh prescription. " he said ringing the intercom for the nurse.

"Chulbuli.."

"It's Sugni...my real name.." She said.

"Ahh yes, yes...Sugni. Go with the nurse get these done , she bring you back here ok." He told her.

"Ok" She said following the nurse out.

"So Mr. Vickram, you seem worried is there something I can help with ?" Dr. Nagar asked.

" I am taking her back to Mawhari, but I am just worried will this be good for her?" He asked.

"Yes it is, her being around familiar surroundings and people, in an environment she was accustomed to will most likely trigger her memory to come back. In these cases it is important to be surrounded by loved ones, and support of the family is very important. See what she mostly needs at the moment is love and support, to be as stress free as possible." He said.

That is what I am worried about doctor." Vickram said.

"What do you mean?"

"Well Mawhari isn't the easiest place to live, and the truth is doctor..." Vickram said looking at the doctor he swallowed . " the truth is, that at the time she fell our relationship was at a breaking point. " The doctor frowned. "What happened between us was my fault. And she remembers none of that now...and our marriage yesterday was really..." Vickram continued explaining the circumstances around the marriage.

"I see..."

" just want her to get better ...and I'll do anything I just don't want to make it worse and I may have just done that..." He said expressing his worse fears.

"Well it sounds to me you did what the circumstances called for..." The doctor said. After a few moments. "I will advise take it one day at a time, see how it goes she how she reacts. Her memory , hopefully, might come back naturally, and when it dose you can try to resolve your personal problems. But until that point what she needs is a stable environment. It is going to be tough...but I think you care about her enough to do the right thing."

"Am I doing that?" He asked.

"The fact that you are here tells me you are..." he said " Whatever your personal issue was right now you are the one familiar thing to her and it shows. Right now she needs that familiarity and stability, without it she will be lost. Best advice I can give you is to take it one day at a time, it might not be easy for you given your history, there is not much than can be done."

" I guess you are right..."

The door opened and Sugni and the nurse came back into the office. Taking the results he looked at it.
"Well it all looks good. Nothing to worry about. You just need to take it easy, and no stress OK? Now where you are going , things might start to happened and you might start to remember, you might get flashbacks, or feel deja vu..or maybe feel nothing. Don't try to force it..Its ok. If you get headaches with these flashbacks..."

"Just rest , breath and take my meds...I know.." She finished for him. "I am kind of accustomed to it now.."

"Right..." he smiled at her.

"Well here is your file for your doctor , your prescription and my card, call me if you need anything."

"Thank you Doctor." Vickram said as they stood up.

"No Problem...you take care...and you Ms. Sugni take care as well. And Good lunch with your future!"

She smiled as they walked out of the office.

"See I told you I was fine... we wasted two hours when we could have been on out way! " She said as they got back in the car
" No we did not. Better safe than sorry...and we got your report and meds..." he said.

She got quite for a while, looking out the window.

"What's the matter ? he asked

She shook her head. "nothing...I just never said thank you, for what you did yesterday..and today " She said as she remembered the temple.

"There are no words to say how gra.."

"Hey you don't have to say anything Sugni, I just did my duty and I will continue to do it as long as you let me." He said.

Sugni looked back out the window, He was not the only one who had a duty to perform, she thought, she was his wife now and she had to make sure she lived up to that. The problem was she did not know the first thing about being a wife, she just hopped she did not disappoint him she though nervously.

CHAPTER 16

It was around nine p.m. when they finally stopped to get some rest. Mawhari would be a two-day drive and being behind the wheel for the day was beginning to take its toll on him. Spotting a small hotel Sugni advised that they stop so he could get some rest otherwise they might have to sleep in the car not sure if they would see another again.
After taking her turn in the shower first Sugni came into the room, lying on the big comfortable bed, oh this was heaven, she thought. Unwittingly thoughts starting swirling in her head ... of some of the comments the girls made making her blush. For the first time since the temple they were alone. She sat up her eyes going to the bathroom door, would he want to...She gulped . "oh stop it Sugni..." she chided herself. Well they were married and married people did that right? Was she ready for that? She began biting into her thumb nail nervously. She felt like there was a hole where her stomach used to be and it was filled with butterflies.

The door of the bathroom opened and Vickram stepped out. Haai Sita miya what am I supposed to do? She thought silently...OK...OK stay calm, don't be nervous, every one dose this right? She observed him silently ; as he hung his towel rather neatly on the back of one of the dining chairs. He placed his dirty laundry in a bag neatly back into the duffel bag and zipping it up . Her eyes went to her towel was waddled in a ball on top of her suitcase, and she just dumped her dirty clothes in one of the inside compartments , the suitcase was still unzipped, she felt like a slob.
"You still awake?" he asked her , taking a seat on the sofa.

"Uh Yeah..." She said, frowning. Why was he sitting there? He Yawned then to her surprise he stretched out his 5" 7' frame on the four foot sofa. Not a comfortable position..

"What are you doing?" She asked

Hmm..going to sleep..." He answered softly sounding like he was half way there already.

"You can't sleep there!" She said, he turned his head to look at her. "I mean the couch is too small and this bed is extra-large..."

"I am fine here , don't worry..." he said

"No! that is not fair...you've been driving all day and you should be comfortable..."

"I am comfortable Sugni, just get some rest...I'll sleep on the couch" He said

"But you don't have to...I mean" She fumbled when she saw his expression, she could feel the heat on her cheeks. " I mean we're married right. It doesn't matter anymore." Somehow her fingernails looked pretty interesting, she did not think she could look at him.

"I think this is best for now...hmmm?" he replied . "it's late let's just sleep." He said turning his head to the opposite side . She stared at him for a moment, there was no way he could be comfortable on that sofa . Without covers or a pillow. And she could not in good conscience sleep on this king sized bed peacefully.

Sighing she got up and went over to the couch, and lay on the floor. She closed her eyes trying to find a comfortable spot , it was not easy considering the nice soft bed she was just on. She groaned in frustration and she turned again.

She could feel his eyes on her . She opened her eyes find him staring down at her from the sofa. His head propped in his hand looking down at her.

"Now what are you doing?" He asked sounding like he was talking to a child.

"Trying to sleep.." She answered sighing sadly.

"On the floor?" She nodded, making a sad face. He smiled a bit. And sighed.

"And what's wrong with the bed..."

"Ahh the bed..so soft, so big , sooo comfortable...and so empty." She let out a fake sniffle looking at the bed longingly.

So why aren't you on it.?" He asked

"Because SOMEBODY insists on sleeping on a couch...So I have to sleep here." She said
"I told you I was comfortable here.."

"But I am not..." She said..."And I won't be comfortable sleeping there knowing you are here. Since we are supposed to share everything ...well if you are there then I am here...now Good night...!" She said turning on her side she closed her eyes, and waited ...and waited ...and waited...Did he go to sleep ?she wondered.

" Hey Bhagwan...Get up!" Ahhh ! It worked; she had to stop herself from smiling...

"huh?" She said.. trying to look confused.

"Oyie...you can stop with the act... get up...you win we'll share the bed!"

She let out a happy yelp and she got up, laughing.

Vickram shook his head mumbling about her being a stubborn and a drama queen. Getting off the sofa he followed her to the bed lying down facing the wall.

" Happy now?" He asked.

"Yep..." She said, yawning.

"Good night.." He said

"night"

******\\\\\\//////*****

Sugni awoke the next morning to find the bed empty. Where did he go? She wondered. Getting up she knocked on the bathroom door..."Vickram?" No answer.

His bag was in the corner, maybe he went out for a walk. Taking the opportunity she went into the bath room to get ready to leave. Coming back out a few minutes later, she saw that he had returned. He looked lost in thought.

"Hey Good morning ! Where did you run off to this morning..." She asked.

"Nowhere just went to check on the car..." Vickram said. Truth was he needed some time to clear his head, to put his actions into perspective. When he woke up to her next to him it was like a sweet form of torture for him, here he had everything he ever wished for Sugni , next to him with the title of his wife...yet she was not.

He had to remember that she was acting on instinct and uncertainty ...but he knew better. An although he would do anything to forget all that and move on from the past, his demons would not let him.

"Is everything alright?" She asked.

"Yes everything is fine... why don't you order us some breakfast and I'll go grab a shower..."

"ok...what would you like?"

"Tea...and anything you wish..." He said making his way to the bathroom. Nodding her head she did as requested.

After she placed the order she finished packing her suitcase. Her eye catching a little gift that Amma gave her as a wedding gift.

There was a knock on the door that was answered by Vickram, who came out the bathroom. Receiving the breakfast he tipped the waiter and closed the door. He placed it on the table and turned to find Sugni standing next to him with a smile on her face.

"What?' he asked.

Silently she looked at him and brought her hand up to him like an offering, she was holding what looked like a gold and black chain. A mangalsutra. He swallowed. God was really bound on torturing him some more it seemed.

"Amma gave it to me as a gift...she said all married women wear it. I thought maybe you could put it on me." She said looking at him expectantly.

Vickram never took his eyes from her hand, as he closed his eyes ..."Um..we don't ha...I mean..." he stuttered.

Sugni looked at him closely, he kept looking at her hand like she was holding a time bomb. The realization dawned on her that this marriage was not something he wanted , but he did it to save her. She was so stupid.
Slowly she closed her fist..."Oh" She said softly "I get it...I am so stupid na..." She shook her head as she tried to laugh but could not . She turned away from him, to hide the hurt that crossed her face.

"You did all of that at the wedding to shut them up...everything just went too far... that wasn't supposed to happen. I- I- I am the dumb one who took it for real..." The past two days had to be the most adventurous in her life, but it was the most alive and secure she felt. But there was no way someone like him would want to marry her. She blinked her eyes , these stupid tears where did they come from.

She caught sight of herself through the mirror of the dresser, the sindoor on her forehead, she happily applied, not once did she think to question it. It just felt right. But the truth was maybe he wanted to get her out of there, but there was no way he wanted her as a burden for life.

Slowly she raised her hand to remove the little red mark effectively putting an end to this charade, but was stopped when she felt his hand on her shoulder. She turned to look at him. He shook his head , no. Taking her hand he took the chain preparing to put it on her.

"No! please..I don't want you to feel you have to do this...I understand...I'll..."

"Shhh...no one is compelling me..." He said as he attached the mangalsutra around her neck.

Softly she touched the chain around her neck, then looked at him. "You mean this...you really want this?" She asked looking at him .He nodded.

Feeling overwhelmed with emotion she hugged him tightly, resting her head on his chest , as she began to cry . "You really mean this, you're not just doing this because you feel you have to..." She asked again.

Slowly he returned her hug blinking back his own tears ... "No ..Sugni...I mean it...I do."

"I-I love you." She said softly .

"I love you to.." He said sounded choked up. They stayed like that for a few minutes . She not wanting to let him go, as he comforted her. He would do anything to keep her happy and protected even if that meant living with the threat of her memory returning and her hatred . If this was how he was supposed to rectify his crimes, then so be it.
"Shhh don't cry." He said releasing her to look at her face. She blinked shaking her head. Gently wiping her face he said. "I am always here for you Sugni, you're not alone. As long as you want me here I'll be here." He said.

She frowned. "What does that mean?" She asked

"It means that ..you have nothing to worry about. I just want you to be happy that's all."

"I am happy with you. I am not afraid anymore."

"Good!" He smiled slightly "Because you don't have to be. Ok?" She nodded giving him a watery smile. They stared at each other , the tension between them pulsating. It would be so easy to cross that line...

"Uh...breakfast is getting cold, we should eat and hit the road , we have a long trip ahead." He said turning away breaking the connection.

"Ok..." She said moving away to get the breakfast ready.

Half hour after they were back on the road. The happiness she was feeling was visible on her face. She kept staring at Vickram wondering what their life would be like back in the village.

"So where we are going...are their other people there?" She asked.

"Yes..there is my mother, my brother and sister -in -law. My sister, Kuhu, she's married and lives not too far away. Then there is your Aunt, you used to live with."

"My aunt? What about my parents?" She asked

"uh,,Your mom passed away a few years ago and your dad well he was not exactly around." He said softly.

"ohh...I see.." She said looking out the window. Deep in thought.

"Hey..what's the matter?" He asked noting her morose expression, reaching over to hold her hand.

She shook her head, as she looked at him, entwining her fingers through his. "it's just , I should know these things, and I don't . What I am I going to say to them?..."I am sorry I don't know you?. It's like I am a stranger in my own life..." She said , voicing her fears.

"I know this is hard, don't worry everything will be fine. Remember what the Doctor said. Just take it easy, one day at a time and don't force anything,. It'll come back eventually."

"I know, but what if I mess up, I mean they might expect me to act someway and I don't know..or when they find out where I was..they might think.."

"Shhh relax ...that won't happen, they'll be happy to see you and know that you are alive. No one is going to judge you. Everything will be fine. Trust me." He said.

She let out a heavy sigh. "I guess you are right...I won't you're here na... everything will be fine."

Not wanting to spoil the mood she changed the subject, talking about the scenery they drove past and other mundane subjects. Lucky for her finding something to talk about was never a problem, She could find even a dead leaf fascinating, getting a response from him however was not that easy. Hmm seems like she was married to that strong silent type., she thought looking at him, as he paid extra attention to the road. Again she wondered what it would take to get him to smile...really smile...or even laugh.

They made a few pit stops for food and bathroom breaks , it was a long and hard drive but he did want to make it back to Mawhari before the next day. Somewhere along the way sleepiness kicked in, and she ended up nodding off. When she did open her eyes it was nightfall.

"Where are we?" She asked looking around.

"Bundel Kand..."

"Where?"

"About 15 minutes from Mawhari..." he said

"We're almost there...Oh...what time is it?" She asked blinking, as she stretched out her sleepiness.

"Hmm maybe about nine I guess..." he answered.

So this was where she was from? She thought as she looked around. In the lights of a few street lights, there was not much to make out, it all looked strange to her. However as they entered the village, there was something eerily familiar about it. Maybe because she expected to somehow know this place , perhaps it was her subconscious , there was something about the small wooden somewhat run down houses that seemed familiar. She could not pin point what it was but there was something, about that tree in the square looking like a dark shadow in the night. She closed her eyes as faint voices , tugged at her brain, words she could not make out ...shadowy figures running , laughter...it seemed so familiar yet nothing was.

Taking her hand she rubbed her temple gently, this was not a good time for this, please she thought. The dull ache in her head started. She took a few deep breaths hoping to hold it off until they got to where they were going.

"We're here..." She heard him say after a while.

"Huh? Oh ...Ok.." She said opening her eyes she looked , blinked then looked again at the house he had parked the car in front of. It was huge.Somehow this was not what she expected at all, one of the little huts she saw yes, this ...this ...this...mansion . No.

She turned to look at him. "ahhh you work here or something?" she asked. That made sense, given what she saw of the way he lived in the past few days.

"Not exactly...I live here...this is my home, our home." He said.

Sugni thought her jaw crashed on the floor... She swallowed. Ok then... Suddenly she felt akward...her head started again.
"Come on..." He said taking her their bags out and moving towards the building silently she followed.
He knocked on the door and waited for a few minutes. She was beginning to think maybe no one was at home. When slowly the massive door opened.

A small woman stood on the other side , dressed in a sari. Slowly the look of shock crept on her face as she took in her visitors.

"Vic...Vickram...Oh my God ...Vickram! " She said softly , unbelievably . Then she embraced him in a manner of a mother meeting her long lost child.

Vickram dropped the bags as he returned her hug, his own eyes filling with tears.

"Maa..." he said softly, his voice filled with emotion.

"ohh my Son...my son..." She pulled back to look at him "Where have you bee...Oh my God ,...Su"Sugni?" She said her eyes finally catching the movement behind Vickram to the person standing behind him.
Letting go of him, she moved in fornt of her...

"You're ...You're ...She is alive? How...she was...Sugni?" She said flustered looking from one to the other, taking them both in .

Moving slowly towards her as though she was seeing a ghost. Sugni took in the exchange, feeling like an intruder. That voice, again that eerie sense that this was familiar. She began feeling somewhat suffocated. Her head was feeling heavy.

Another person calling her Sugni , yet she had no idea who this was. Before She knew it , the room began spinning, she felt herself falling...but could not quite stop herself.

CHAPTER 17

Vickram grabbed her before she could hit the floor.

"Oh my God!" Godavari said , as he took her in his hands and moved towards the stair case.
"Vickram what is wrong with her beta?" She asked following him...

"I'll explain maa...just need to get her on a bed..." He said...

Moving to walk in front of him she led the way to his room opening the door for him, as he laid her down. She looked on at the way he tucked her into the bed. Taking her purse, he removed a pill bottled. She also noticed small things she missed before , the sindoor, mangal Sutra...symbols of a married woman. They were married.
There was so many questions rolling in her head...

"Vickram...what's going on?" She asked

Vickram took a seat next to the bed, as he looked at Sugni , then at his mother who had a perplexed look on her face.
"I found her again, Maa. In the strangest of places , in the strangest of ways. I found her...but I took everything from her..."

" What? She was dea..." She stopped when he shook his head...

"No...the fall did'nt kill her... she floated away, and ended up in Banaras...with no memory of who she was or what happened to her. It was by fate I found her...in a shady part of town being pulled into a life no one should have. .." He began telling her how he came to meet her again.

"I could not leave her there, and the only hope for her to get better is back here..." He said looking at her.

"But beta this marriage..."

"This marriage...was the only way I could protect her...I know she'll remember, and realize that I was the reason she lost everything ...but until then I won't anything happen to her. What she needs now is love and care...and I'll give her that for as long as possible, what happens after...well I'll just cross that bridge when we get there..." He said looking at Sugni on the bed.

Moving next to him, Godavari put her hand on his shoulders. "But what about you son?" She asked.

"It isn't about me...it took me a while to realize that. I made a lot of mistakes with her maa... she is this condition because of me...I have to live with that for the rest of my life. But if in some small way I can rectify a part of that...I'll do it."

"You're not the only one who made mistakes son, I did too. Refusing to see how miserable you were with..." She closed her eyes and shook her head. "But all that is in the past now...but now looking at you and her, I believe that it was fate that brought you two together again. God won't be that cruel to you , son...if you were not meant to be HE would not let this happen..."

He shrugged. He did not know about that, and he would not let himself hope.

Sugni stirred , as she opened her eyes, she winced.
"Hey..." He said softly.

"I fainted again?"

"Yeah..."

"Sorry...oh.." She said holding her head.

"Easy ...easy...here is your meds...let me get you some water.."

"I'll get it.." Godavori said leaving them.

Sugni noticed the same lady from before as she left the room. She looked at Vickram.

"Who is she?" She whispered.

"My mother..." He answered

"Ohh...she knows me...but I don't kno..."

"I know..its ok..relax...'

She'll think I'm rude..."

"Not at all..."

The door opened as Godavori returned with the water, carrying their bags as well. "Here you go..." She said , as Vickram got up to take the suitcase form her.

"Here take it." Sitting up slightly Sugni took the medication.

"I am sorry Maaji...I.."

"It's ok ...I understand...you just rest hmmm?" Godavari said with a smile.

"Relax...lie down..."Vickram said. As he passed his hand through her hair.

"Umm it's late..why don't you both get some rest..Vickram...we can talk in the morning." She said.

"Where is every one maa?..." He asked just now realizing that since he arrived he did not see any one else. Strange.

They are out...look...you had a long trip and I am sure you are tired...she needs you right now...we'll talk in the morning..." She said Now was not the time to get heavy with all that had happened here. The tiredness was showing on his face, and his concern over Sugni was apparent.

He nodded. Looking at her. He frowned something felt wrong.

"Is everything alright Maa?" he asked looking at her.

She gave him a slight smile, that did not quite reach her eyes. "It is now...it's good to have you home son...so good to have you ho..." She could not help the tears that began flowing form her eyes.

"Maa.." standing up Vickram hugged her. "Hey shhh...I am here now...I' am not going anywhere..."

She nodded. Pulling back she looked at them. Taking a deep breath to compose herself she said. "Get some rest...you look tired..." Touching his face one more time, she reluctantly left them, closing the door softly behind her.

"Is she ok?" Sugni asked after she left. Again feeling like an intruder in the mother- son moment.

"Yes emotional...it's been a long time since I been here..."

"How long?"

"About seven months...ever since you..." He stopped.

"Ohhh..." She said quietly...

"Get some sleep ...I'll be right back..."

"Where are you going?" She asked , this house felt strange she did not want to stay here alone, even for a few minutes.

"Relax...just to freshen up... a few minutes..." He said. She nodded.

She closed her eyes, feeling drowsy from the medication, as she thought about that.. He spent seven months away from home. Looking for her?...

She felt darkness as he turned out the light, as he came to lie down on the bed. She sighed .
"Feeling better?" he asked.

"Hmm ..hmmm" She said. "Vickram?"

"Yeah?'

"Thank you?"

"For what?"
"For months I thought , there was no one out there looking for me, I really did not matter to any one...but I was wrong, you were looking weren't you...you just could not find me..." She turned to face him in the dark "Thank you for not giving up on me..." She said.

" I think fate had something to do with it..." he said

"hmm ...maybe, but it's nice to know someone out there cares... uhhh..." She winced.

"Shhh..." he said reaching over to massage her head. "Get some sleep..." He softly.

" kay..." She said sleepily as she finally faded off to sleep.

******\\\\\\\///////******
The next morning Vickram came down, leaving Sugni asleep in the room. He found his mother sitting at the dining table.

"Good morning Maa..." he greeted.

"Good morning beta..." She said smiling, he noticed that she already had tea prepared. Taking a seat next to her she poured him cup.

"How is she?" She asked.

"She is Ok ...she is still asleep." She nodded.

"Dose the fainting spells happen often?" she asked.

" only when she feels stressed...I guess coming here ..."

"Did you take her to a Doctor?"

He nodded. Giving her a a brief rundown of what the doctor told him. "So basically, we let her figure it out on her own, help her along if she asks questions...but try not to stress her. You know to much at once.. A piece of cake right." He said

"I understand..." she said. She nodded gravely.

Vickram looked around the hall way, it felt deserted not a soul in sight, unusual , normally there would be servants at work.

"Maa...where is every one? ...the place looks strange, whats been going on?..., When is Bhushan coming back...and Kuhu..I know she'll be shocked to see me..." He said smiling. Realizing he kind of missed home. However his smile faded when he saw the look of pure anguish on his mother's face.

"Maa...? What's wrong?" he asked. Shocked to realized she was crying.

So much has happened since you left beta...So much...this family has been torn apart..." She said. "I don't even know where to begin..."

"What...?'

Your brother..." Reaching over she held on to his hand , to comfort him , to brace him for the bad news as well as to draw strength to be able to tell him all that the family has been through in the last few months. "Your...brother is no more Vickram...He passed away..."

"What...No...Maa..nooo...When..how" Vickram asked , in disbelief and shock.. He felt numb ...like someone threw a bucket of cold water on him. He was hearing this but he could not believe it. His brother ...dead?.

" Not long after you left...he got sick...within a month he was gone...we still don't know what was exactly wrong with him..."

"Ohh God!...Bhushan...Noo...Oh God" He lamented softly

"That's not all beta... there is no easy way to tell you this, my son..."

" What Maa?" he asked ,

" This is not easy to say son, it is going to be harder to hear...your sister...your sister is fighting for her life right now in the hospital...she had an accident, a bad one her car ran into a truck at full speed...She is on a coma on life support..."

"Oh God no...Ohh god Kuhu?"

"Yes...our baby and you want to know the worse part of it...is Suman, Digvijay and Jwala are using this to get their hands on the business and property...my daughter's life is being used as a bargaining chip..." She said

"What...What are you saying?... why would they..." He asked confused

"True...Digvijai is threatening to pull the plug on her life support...I don't sign the papers. " She wiped her face as she took a sip of water to compose herself. "A lot has happened son, after his death, Suman came out saying he left his share of the business to her...signatures I am sure was forged , but can't prove. Behind my back she began making some shady deals renting out lands to people I am not sure are credible, selling off some. Firing the servants, and having temporary ones for when she is here. Going on trips...Oh she is living the life now. Jwala and Digvijai became her advisors. Kuhu...Kuhu tried to step in...but Digvijai was there to stop her... Ohh they had some nasty fights, I could not stand to see her being mistreated and there was not much I could do to stop it. That day she had a huge fight with him and was in her way here. ..." She explained to him.

Vickram listened to his mother's story horrified and in disbelief that all of this could have happened in such a small time. Suman, a traitor. He always thought her to be a bit weird, but he never thought she would be one to turn the family upside down.

As the details of the story began sinking him, his anger started raising and together with his anger was the guilt that if he was here none of this would have happened. Again he let down the ones he loved, for selfish reasons.
"Where are they now?" he asked.

"I don't know...off on some country hopping trip...leaving the papers for me to sign...Thank God you came back when you did Vickram...I really did not know what to do..." She said.

Getting up from his chair, he knelt in front of his mother's chair. As he looked up at her tear filled face.

"Maa I am so sorry...you needed me and I was not here...you faced all this alone..." He closed his eyes, not able to even fathom what it must be like for her. " I know I have done a lot to disappoint you..."

"No beta that's not true.." She said, she did not want him blaming himself for this.

"Yes I have...but I promise I'll find a way to set things right...I will..." he said

"I know...I know..." she said.

******\\\\\\//////******

Sugni awoke to the strange room; it took her a minute to remember where she was and how she got here. Getting up she found her bag and freshened up wondering where Vickram was. He was probably catching up with his family.
She wondered what she was supposed to say to them...she needed to control herself and make sure she did not faint again. Just relax. Stay calm. Taking a deep breath she went out of the room walking around. This sure was a quiet place she thought, you can hear a pin drop.

She approached the stairs coming down, hearing voices she followed it. Then stopped short. Vickram was standing hugging his mother, they looked upset. She was crying. They seem to be sharing a deep conversation, again she felt like she was intruding. Wondering if she should go back upstairs or interrupt them. Before she could make up her mind though he turned and went off in the opposite direction, leaving his mother standing there. Sugni stood confused not sure what to do.

"Sugni..?" Godavari called.
"good morning Maaji..." She said.

"Good morning beta, don't stand there lost...come...have something.." She said calling her over to the table.
Sugni approached the table and noticed everything looked untouched.

"Are'nt you eating?" She asked..

"No I am good...you have something you must be hungry."

"Where is Vickram?" She asked.

"He is in the study..."

"Ohh..." Looking at her, she looked sad.

"Maaji..what's wrong...I mean I saw Vickram upset...and you. Is everything Ok?'

Godavari looked at her for a while wondering she would find out any way it was nothing to hide, then shook her head. "No...Vickram is upset because he just found out some horrible news..." She said telling her in short about the loss of his brother and his sister's accident.

"Ohh my God..." She said horrified. ..."Maaji I am so sorry.." Those words sounded so superficial to her, but what else could she say.

The arrival of Vickram coming into the room,. "Maa...I want to see Kuhu..." He said, looking grave. She nodded.
