Thank you for sharing your summary of the article on Devadasis. Very informative.

Bednis are not similar to Devadasis I feel. Devadasis had a much higher position in society, and played important roles in courts and temples. Bednis are more exploited, from what I know of.

Came across this book about Bedias, when doing a google search- Chaste Wives and Prostitute Sisters - Patriarchy and Prostitution Among the Bedias of India. This is by Anuja Agarwal, a professor in Delhi.

PSH is showing well the difficulties of both the Thakurs and Bedias, so far. Hope they can continue that.

Lovely analysis :-)

On paper, the contrast b/w the prejudices that Aditya and Sugni respectively have against Bednis and Thakurs respectively are interesting but sadly the execution is majorly lacking from Aditya's end...such scenes require powerful and engaging acting but sadly teh actor is unable to bring DEPTH to the material and the character ends up being quite insipid to me.

It COULD be an interesting story but it seems way too predictable and since Aditya isn't layered enough to really intrigue and the actor doesn't help, that aspect doesn't hold my interest.

I agree with what you pointed out vis a vis Sugni though.

Vikram is the most interesting and unpredictable character in this show and I think his and Sugni's clashes/evolving dynamic make for more interesting stuff...

I don't get why ppl think he's her FATHER'S age...lol poor Varun Badola...from what angle does he look THAT aged?😕

The interest is the story based on true happenings and I read Mohini Giri's book Kanya which gives reference to this Bedni tribe in MP

@chalhov: I don't actually read EPV. This just happens to be a very famous article that was published in it on my area of interest. Basically, after having read this much, I was afraid to watch this show as I thought it would be oversimplified but they are doing a pretty decent job so far.

@cyrine: You're welcome! There is plenty more where that came from! 😛

@CB-fan: I know they are not exactly the same, but what I am trying to say is that a lot of issues of stereotyping and oversimplifying the whole system as exploitation are very similar. In addition, the structure of the society is also parallel, both have matriarchal societies (where the men live with their sisters or mothers and are dependent on them) where the women possesses an autonomy and freedom unknown to women in a domestic context. In fact the term devadasi itself is a huge generalisation, which brought a vast variety of communities and traditions under one umbrella. So I am not trying to say they are the same, but rather that the issues have the same sensitivity.

@ArreYaar: I am willing to give Aditya a little more time, actually. Vikram is indeed interesting and I like his encounters with Sugni (the way he said her name in yesterday's episode after telling Amrita where to find her...Sugni *smiles and shakes his head* was so sweet) but he has had more time to develop. Sometimes a powerful role can tap unknown talent in an actor and i hope that is the case with the Adi guy. For now, he is just about scraping through, I wouldn't say he is dragging it down, but it could be better and stronger. I am sure they cast him with something in mind, considering how good the rest of the casting is, so I will wait this one out for a bit before I really comment.

Same here, I am not going to judge Adi either as I see a lot of potentialin his caharcter, he has been in the show for two days while vik has been there for 2 weeks. And I also believe that Adi will improve considering the rest of the cast being so well suited for tehri roles, I dare say that he might be surprise package. After all Adi, Sugni, Vik, gul they all must have gone thorugh screen tests etc before they were chosen! Iam definitely going to wait and watch before I decide!. Thank you for putting it so beautifuly, As you might have noticed Iam not that good in expressing my thoughts in words! But I hope you guys understand what I mean!

My opinion is in red!

Not really...Vikram OWNED any scene he's been in since the moment he entered...it wasn't about getting time to develop as a character...infact he's only gotten MORE interesting with time...but the fact is, he was brilliant since his first scene only...it's the mark of a strong actor that they make an IMPACT in any which way in a scene...yes, Varun is an established actor so that will obviously show.

But Aditya also doesn't seem to be doing his FIRST show...he's acted in a soap before this...but sadly THIS role requires more DEPTH in acting...and like I mentioned in another post, these past two epis were his GOLDEN chance to shine cuz he was literally given EXCLUSIVE footage to showcase his turmoil filled past...but sadly the actor was just mouthing the lines on such a SUPERFICIAL level that the impact just doesn't register.

Re: casting...from what I know, the casting directors were more keen to cast fantastic actors like Mishal Raheja and Neil Bhatt for this role...and NOW I can start to see why...cuz this guy they seem to have settled for is just NOT doing justice to the role.

hey sam! great to see you here!
time to bring shri on board as well 😆

lovellly post, and totally concur with your views. i am also hoping this freshness and standard can hold out as long as possible (since we all know at one point or another the plotting begins to get compromised).. also dying to see how both aditya and sugni evolve during the course of this show since they both have emotional wounds and a sense of pride. plus, with a twisted relationship foreshadowed between sugni and vikram - i think the struggle of all parties will be worthwhile to watch.

vikram being consumed by his dark obsession for sugni
gulabiya watching her daughter wrung through this social and personal struggle
sugni and aditya overcoming their own demons.

anyway, best of luck on your studies!

@Moksha: Hello there! 😃

Yes, yes, let's drag Shri here and make hay while the sun shines on this story! 😆

I love your idea that Vikram will have a dark obsession for Sugni. That sounds fascinating. I guess an obsession begins to have negative connotations first of all when the one on the receiving end does not reciprocate. I think they have made it adequately clear that Vikram is starting to get into Sugni...the way he said "zindagi" while looking at her picture...but she clearly sees him as a helpful mentor figure who is not like other thakurs. What fascinates me most, though is that we know that he is going to want to do her sar dhakai (according to the third promo). My question is, wherefore? And I have written my prediction on page 1 in the third post, I think. I hope they go with that kind of subtlety.

You know, Vikram reminds me a lot of Nobu in Memoirs of a Geisha. He is against the system until he meets that one special Geisha that changes his mind.

@ArreYaar: I guess we will just have to wait and see because I didn't find as much to criticise in Adi's performance as you seem to have found. And here comes another literature reference...😆 I think this might be like Phantom of the Opera, where despite the pull to the Phantom, Christine ends up with Raoul. I think Adi is Raoul.

Hey Moksha!!
🤗
I am the silent one here. Anju asked me to watch it as the show was getting promoted. You know she helps developing the forum site. So initially checked on the subject matter. And like Samana, was bit apprehensive how they would handle this sensitive subject. Me too have known these kind of prevalent practices in south India and Maharashtra and seen movies...so I was should I or should I not ? It was more about will they show me realism, sensationalism or optimism. Betweem all these ism's I decided to be the silent forum reader for a while. 😊

Initially I checked on Rai Dance. I am interested in dances so I wanted to know more about it. I was more intrigued when the way Gulabiya danced in the promos made. That is only contribution I made to the forum so far😆 Parm knows about it.

Anyways, so happy to see you and Samana. I wouldn't have responded had I not my seen my name there. Once again 🤗

Anyways, Samana blessed us with her analysis. So that takes my fears away. But I actually was happy to see Suguni fight the other way, using dance for her sustenance but in the different manner. And very interestingly I was remembering Navarang's Sandhya's song (Jaa re Natkhat..) and I hear the same in one of the promos!

😊
