I think Meher has a lot of intimacy issues... it would be tough for her to truly let someone in for fear of abandonment. Keeping it to a dating relationship allows you to keep control over it and not let yourself become too dependent on anyone else.. I think that's why it hurts her so much-- because she did let him in completely and became dependent on him. That's why she is so vociferous that she doesn't need him anymore, that she has learned to take care of herself.

But at the same time, I think she was someone who squashed her childhood fantasies to fulfil her aspirations but its not that she didn't have the same aspirations as other girls. That's what her diary monologue was about.
