Abeer Malhotra was always very blatant in matters of the heart, unlike his miss akdu. He laughed remembering the first two times he proposed. The first being during college, which lead to an immediate marriage and ended in a heartbroken tragedy. The second being after Meher had told him she loved him. How much she loved him during the 8 years. How much she missed him. And of course, Abeer being the romantic one asked her to marry him once more. But Meher declined. He knew the scars of the past were still too fresh and it was perhaps stupid of him to ask for such a big step so early.
Well, third time's a charm. He reminded himself. But this time, a little more special.
Meher finished up some financial papers for the company in her cabin. She smiled as she saw the revenue charts and Abeer's name listed at the top. She knew her Abeer was never one to chase after fame and money, but the sense of pride that she felt while looking at his name on the paper, was unexplainable. He deserved it! He deserved to be the highest paid in the entertainment, he deserved the huge fan following, even the crazy girls that would try to push her out of the way when she accompanied him to his award ceremonies.
A sudden knock interrupted her door, she was alarmed to see Nissar there with a nervous smile.
"Uh"Meher, umm actually, Abeer""
"What happened to Abeer?"
"Abeer's show is in recording and there are some issues, Sahani sir is calling you to Abeer's studio."
Meher didn't waste a second before speeding down to Abeer's studio.
"Abeer!" She yelled. "Hello?" She yelled once more as she walked into the dark studio. She couldn't see a thing.
Na na na na na na na na-na na-na na-na na...
Abeer. She could recognize that voice even in blind darkness.
Jhuki teri palkon main, mil jaye mujhe paana. Palkein gire aasoon bhari reh jaaye mere nishaan.
The lights dimly started to brighten. Her breath halted as she comprehended the setting around her.
Toote dil kimat ke tu fikar mere humnawah. Pyaar doon tujh ko iss kadar reh jaaye mere nishaan.
Maintaining a dim light in the surroundings, the bright spotlights fell upon her and her gaze shifted towards the second one that fell upon Abeer. He looked at her with that same sexy smile she fell weak in the knees for. She hesitantly proceeded to walk further toward him when she saw the technicians in the studio. Holy sh*t! They were on national television! Meher looked nervously at him while he devilishly grinned at her. She looked terrified and mustered barely enough courage to almost leave when Abeer blocked her, still strumming his guitar and signing onto the mic.
Mere nishaan, Mere nishaan, Mere nishaan.
khaak mein mil jaun main jaise ki ek lamha A lag ja seene se ban ja mera rahnuma
WHAT THE F*CK IS GOING ON Meher mentally yelled as the studio boys were smiling at them.
Dekhte hai sapne tere sun le meri jaan-e-jaan. Khwab yeh sach ho jaye agar khuda ho meherbaan.
Abeer enjoyed every single nervous reaction of Meher's. She had no idea how cute she had looked at the moment. He smiled as she looked at him confused and pointed to the wall next to them. The light bulbs in shape of words spelt out "WILL YOU MARRY ME?"
Sajde main tere sar jhukta bus chahat ki hai ye dastan .Rooth gaya mera rub jo mujh say to mita de vo
Mere nishaan.
As Meher's tear-glazed eyes closed, she envisioned his proposal in the gazebo during the last month of college. She opened her eyes to see Abeer kneeling down in front of her with that same ring. The same way he did before. She covered her mouth to suppress any cries that were threatening to burst and any squeals of happiness. A tear dripped from her eye as she looked down at Abeer smiling and holding up the ring to her.
She nodded in agreement and smiled through the tears as Abeer got up and slid the ring onto her ring finger. She threw her arms around him he grabbed onto her as if his life depended on it. He must've muttered a thousand I love yous to her within that second.
Sattu had the studio boys shut off the television streaming and the entire office crowd had gathered around them in Abeer's studio as the lights came on. Rati, Loveleen and Nishi were squealing in joy for the couple as Nissar happily pat Abeer on the back.
"Arre dramebaaz! Tum dono ka scene chal raha tha!" Sattu laughed while approaching them.
"And this one!" yelled Loveleen. "She used to give us threatening looks every time someone mentioned Abeer.!" Rati and Nishi nodded in agreement as they all gathered around Meher, teasing her.
Meher and Abeer smiled at each other. The atmosphere was so beautiful, everyone was so happy. No one could imagine how it was possible for a couple like Abeer and Meher to be divorced. Everyone could practically see the love in their eyes. The talks further progressed to marriage and all the girls started cribbing about Meher's Mehendi ceremony when Meher looked at them confused.
"Guys, we're not having a big wedding." She said as the girls looked disappointed.
"Ainvayi!" yelled Nishi, "Aise kaise? Abeer the rockstar's wedding and not a big wedding? What?!"
"We'll have a simple wedding, in fact, court marriage." She said, keeping her reasons well hidden.
"WHAT?!" Everyone responded as if she was an alien.
"You've gone crazy Meher! You two are having a major wedding and that's done! Everything is on us! We will have the biggest wedding ever for you guys!" Sattu said, while everyone looked relieved.
Eventually the office crew left and Abeer was alone locking up his studio at night while Meher was running some more company data in her cabin, not forgetting to continuously admire the rock on her ring finger. It had been 8 years, 8 years since she wore it and it still fit snug and perfect. As if Abeer had made it to perfection. She looked up to find Abeer at her door, admiring how she was staring at the ring.
"I love you so much." He said leaning on the door and smiling at her.
She took out a file from her drawer and progressed towards him till she could walk no further. They were literally joined together with only the file separating them, she tiptoed till she could reach his ear and whispered "We love you too."
He halted as her words registered in his mind. "Baby...today was your appointment, shit, I forgot, how did it go? What happened? My baby is okay right?" Abeer threw a whirlwind of questions at her.
"Relax, relax..." She said calming him down.
She gave him the file containing her reports. Behind it was a dull black and white image. Her sonography. A little dark circle shown and she pointed it out to him as the first sign of their baby.
"One month pregnant!" She exclaimed. She teared up as he looked at her sonography and grinned as he caressed the picture. He looked at her and tried to surpress his shouts of excitement as he pointed to the dark circle and asked her "That's...that's my baby?" He asked enthusiastically.
She nodded in agreement. He carefully set the file down on her desk as he wrapped his arms around her.
"Thank you. This is the greatest gift ever, Meher." He said as he kissed her forehead.
She smiled as they both shut off the office lights and left. Walking hand-in-hand during the dark night to the parking lot and holding onto his shoulder were some of the things Meher looked forward to daily. He had no idea how beautiful her world became once he re-entered.
Meher kissed Abeer on his cheek before leaving to enter the elevator, as he grabbed on to her arm and winked at her, unwilling to leave. He finally left her as she pacified him in promising to spend the entire day with him tomorrow. She checked her phone as she boarded the elevator. 11:10. Boy, she had really spent overtime in the office. She entered her house to find her mom and Bua on the couch, wide awake. Bua got up abruptly as Meher walked inside and proceeded towards her. In the blink of an eye she raised her hand swiftly against Meher.
Meher lost control of herself as she fell back, the stinging pain from the slap still registering in her mind.
All she could hear was the news flash on the television
"A million hearts are broken today as Rockstar Abeer Malhotra proposes to Groove Channel CEO Meher Purohit on live television! Was it a publicity stunt or not?"
