Awesome post Maddy👏
All of you here are very knowledgeable people and I'll definitely learn a lot here
Talking about Shivaji Maharaj, I have been hearing his stories since I was a kid. He is in true sense a hero for all of us and it makes me proud every time I read about him😊

Thanks 😊 May I know your name please?
I guess Shivaji Maharaj is close to heart of everybody who has read about his life and achievements.

If interested in history, you should check out Abhay's (history_geek) blog for some amazing posts, information and research. Link of his blog is shared on his threads.

Wow! What wonderful rare poem you shared 👏

Shivaji Maharaj dreamed impossible dream which he turned into reality
Like Narhar Kurundkar wrote in the forward to Shriman Yogi, he was a nationalist in Chanakya mould.

Line in bold, this is why when Lokmanya Tilak launched his Swarajya is my birthright and I will earn it - he asked people to start celebrating Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti for motivation and nationalistic fervor.

Great post Radhika. Maddy and i, myself, both are trying our best to bring you back on IF to post regularly. Lol

The poem you have shared is awesome. Maddy has also mentioned about the nationalistic fervor regarding Shivaji during the freedom struggle.

Recently a friend of mine, published an article on Shivaji.
Quoting his words below in entirety ---

One poem you have mentioned above. There is another poem of Tagore written about Shivaji.

"Tomare korilo vidhi Bhikshuker pratinidhi

Rajyeshwar deen udaseen

Palibe je rajdharma Jeno taha mor karma

Rajya loye rabe rajyaheen

Vatsa, tobe ei laho mor ashirvad saho

Amar gerua gatravas

Bairagir uttariya pataka koriya niyo

Kahilen Guru Ramdas"

" From Rabindranath Tagore's poem " Pratinidhi" (1897)

Translation:

"So fate has made you the representative of a beggar

You will be a king but at the same time poor (deen) udaseen (detached)

You will follow the Raj dharma

As though it were my karma

Despite having a kingdom you will be without one

Vatsa so with my blessings take this saffron attire of mine

Make this wanders's (sanyasi) (bairagi) cloth your flag

Said Guru Ramdas"

The poem alludes to Shivaji and his Guru Ramdas. It shows the role Guru Ramdas played in Shivaji's life and also reflected on the ideal of Swarajya. Pratinidhi was a poetic rendering of how the ideal of Swarajya was greater than Shivaji himself !

During the Indian Freedom Struggle, revolutionaries were mainly concentrated in what was then Bombay Province, Bengal and Punjab. The ideological fountainhead was provided, among others, by the nationalist trio of Lal - Bal - Pal i.e. Lala Lajpat Rai, Balgangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal.

Lala Lajpat Rai of Punjab wrote a biography of Shivaji in 1896. It was in Urdu, published in Lahore. Lokmanya Tilak of course started the Shivaji Festival or Shiv Jayanti Utsav, first in Maharashtra, then elsewhere. It would find the greatest support in Bengal.

The first time it took place was in 1895, during a session of the Indian National Congress Party at Pune. The site was what is today known as the Mahatma Phule Market (Mandai) and Lokmanya Tilak spoke about Chhatrapati Shivaji and national rejuvenation to thunderous applause and adulation.

Perhaps it is important to note that Surendranath Banerjee presided over this session and also gave a speech regarding the great Maratha. As the then President of the Indian National Congress, he declared his unequivocal support for the Shivaji Utsav.

Many years later, Banerjee cited the example of Shivaji and his agrarian policies when arguing some case regarding farmers against the British Empire!

PS : Similar poems / plays are also present about MP (Maharana Pratap) in regional languages. I remember Radhika was working on an article regarding the same ; collecting poems / plays in Telugu, from Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas written about MP. A Telegu poet Venkat Sastri has written "Shivabharatamu" about Shivaji & another Telegu poet Rajashekhara wrote "Rana Pratap Simha Charitramu" . There are PLENTY of such works.

@Abhay, do you have any references available about letters exchanged between Shivaji Maharaj and Mirzaraje Jaysingh? The two shared cordial relationship if I am not wrong, and I am not sure if there were many letters exchanged between them, but I would love to read them if there are any. Or any other writeups that shades some light on their interactions. At your leisure though!!

Rashmi,

I have collected the letters exchanged between Mirza Raje Jai Singh of Amer & Aurangzeb ; and also the letters exchanged between Aurangzeb and Shivaji.

Though, i could not get direct letters exchanged between Shivaji and Mirza Raje Jai Singh but in the letters collected above, we get details about the conversations which both of these had. I will post if you are interested, slowly.

Abhay, absolutely wonderful post 👏 You have shared such interesting information. Shivaji Maharaj inspired the freedom fighters against British and he is a real inspiration to youngsters even today.
So is the case with Maharana Pratap. Radhika was discussing about history and different sides and interpretations. Do people remember the wars in detail really? It is the intent and the life these towering magnificent men devoted to nation building that is remembered today.

Lal Bal Pal so famous from freedom struggle. Shivaji Maharaj took inspiration from Maharana Pratap, i
t seems like history is a chain that is linking different events from different centuries in inspiring heroes to great deeds.

I don't know what to put in index, this is a short thread and all posts have some information/discussion.

Abhay, if you want, just tell me what you want to add to title thread, will edit accordingly.
