I first thought, on reading your delightful piece, that you were in the wrong place, and would do wonders for Tellydom if you set up shop there.But on second thoughts, I have revised my opinion. You would not last a week in Ektaland, which extends far beyond Balaji's premises, for it is not a place that one can escape. It is a pervasive mindset that clings to stereotypes like a leech.

And Ekta and the rest are correct in their assessment of their audience, for when Yashraj set up a TV division and produced what, to me, was the best serial on the global drug trade made anywhere, including in the US, Powder, what happened? During its preplanned 6 month run, the TRPs barely crossed 1. Then they adapted Jeffery Archer's Kane and Abel into a more soapish but still very well made serial, Kismat, a daily telecast at 10:30 pm for 6 months, and again the TRPs. barely crossed 1. It was a bit better, but only a bit, with the light romcom about a marriage agency run by two friends, Rishta.com, and a couple of other shows. The predictable happened, and Yashraj closed their TV division.

So you see, we get what the TV audience wants. And if you do not fit the audience profile, tough luck!
