Who's this Balvinder Singh jo famous ho gaya?

He's one of those who come to Mumbai to become famous. Mika Singh and I both have the same name and have come from Patiala and Ludhiana. We stay in the same colony and even chase the same girl. (Laughs) We are buddies in real life and rivals in reel life. Technically, I made my debut in Kalpana Lajmi's Daman (2001) and thought that would be my first and last film as an actor. I was raw and clueless. And after that film, if anyone offered me a role, I'd tell them to go watch Daman. They never returned!

Which films did you turn down?

Sujoy Ghosh's Jhankaar Beats (2003) amd Dev Anand's Love In Times Square (2003) because I did not want do intimate scenes and jeopardize my family life. Though I was curious about acting, singing has always been my passion.

So what changed your mind?

In the last few years, I began to feel that I should act in at least one more film so that I don't regret later. My wife Radhika also agreed. Sunil (Agnihotri) approached me after seeing me do a spoof at an award function. I thought the film was a musical, but he surprised me by telling me that it was not the role of a singer.

And now with Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa 6 you are out to prove that you are a dancer too?

No, not to prove a point to anybody else but to find out whether I am capable of dancing. It could add another feather to my cap. I have also started practising with my choreographer Marischa Fernandes. It is stressful, but I am enjoying it.

Why not become a music director like your father, Manas Mukherjee?

Today, it is all about jingles with hooks and repeating melodies. I don't know if I am capable of that. 'Jab Se Tere Naina...' (Saawariya) did not have a hook.

A recent song that you have recorded that left you really fresh

The one I sang for music director Shantanu Moitra for Rajkumar Hirani's film Peekay. I don't know whether it will be picturised on Aamir Khan or Sushant Singh Rajput. Now I'd love to sing for Vishal Bharadwaj and Amit Trivedi.
