Dear Nina,
Doordarshan is the Great Grandaddy of Indian TV; it is an autonomous semi-govt. TV channel that carries telecasts with NO pop ups. They were the pioneers, and have huge market share in the hinterland outside the metros, being free to air. Their shows are also more decent and their archives. especially in music and dance, are unrivalled. They have treasure hordes of all the greats of today and yesterday, recorded in their prime.
Because of the tremendous reach of Doordarshan, TV producers who want to reach out to that kind of audience telecast their programmes on Doorsdarshan as well as on one the Zee.Sony/Star TV type of GEC. Aamir Khan's Satyameva Jayate was telecast on Doordarshan and Star Plus, and it is the same with Saraswatichandra now. Whenever such things happen, I always opt for Doordarshan; I watch the Ramayana on Doordarshan, not on Zee. It is a clean telecast without large popups 2/5ths of the way up from the bottom of the screen, and in violent colours. In the US, I am told that even AMC now has pop ups! So when there are some of the films I like, like Luck by Chance, or Zindagi na milegi dobara, I record it from Doordarshan, never from one of the private channels.
There is a Doordarshan International and you can get it in the US. Look it up at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD_India. It says that In the United States, the channel was launched on July 26, 2007, and is available on DirecTV through
Genesis Networks. It is sure to carry Saraswatichandra.
As for PR, I really do not know what to say. It goes steadily downhill, and with the Vishnu-Balan scene and the Soham shooting scene, it seems to have touched rock bottom, Rithvik is sleepwalking thru what little footage he has, and at times he is unwatchable. In fact, I do not see how his role is to be turned around. I have written off any Arjun-Purvi reunion, and this not just because of the inevitable collateral damage, but because it will be a washed out affair. As Pari wrote recently, both of them have changed, and she much more than he has. Every day, the bond between her and Onir grows stronger, and soon Arjun will be nowhere in her scheme of things, and not just because of a growing and crushing burden of gratitude. As Janhvi wrote, a girl with any good sense would any opt for a man (Onir) over a boy (Arjun).
As for the court case, it is a non-starter. The BALH case was quite different and cannot furnish a Balaji precedent. Do you think Arjun is going to have his kid branded publicly as illegitimate? No way. And in any case, he has the kid already. These ideas might be a good way of letting off steam for the exasperated public in the IF, nothing more.
The funny thing is that Asha, despite the very hyper scenes she is stuck with, is taking a good crack at them and is doing far better than I had expected her to do. Purvi is irritating and very stupid, but Asha's take on Purvi is surprisingly good, and the two are quite distinct. The same with Shakti, who probably came in expecting to be there just as a stopgap for a few months. But he has grown into the role of Onir, working on the nuances of the helpless emotional dependence of a mature and responsible man on an unstable and demanding girl whom he has had the misfortune to fall in love with. Moreover, his is a consistently good character, and and I am sure the Indian audience is growing to like him a lot.
As for
Saraswatichandra, it should not compared with the run of the mill serials like PR and its cousins, but more to Yashraj's mindblowing
Powder in 2010 and then their Kismat the following year, which was officially based on
Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer. Both were among the best things I have ever seen, and as for
Powder, not just on Indian TV but anywhere at all, including the US. Both failed at the TRPs, and Yashraj pulled out of TV. Now this one is by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and while he is quirky, you cannot question his aesthetics. As for conflicts, with Saraswatichandra's stepmother plotting against him, why that is there in the Ramayana as well! Without conflict where would the story be? This production will have nothing to do with the likes of PR, that is for sure, neither will it have endless dragging and mindless 'twists'. It is based on a classic novel, and I have high hopes of it. In any case, it can never be as bad as PR and the like!

Shyamala I have watched the first couple of episodes of Saraswatichandra and so far it's good. I don't know how long I can keep up with it though. What's Doordashran by the way? Is it a different channel?
As for PR, I'm glad Ovi's bonding with the baby. I hope the baby gets very attached to Ovi as her mom. Purvi is beyond annoying now. I simply can't stand her any longer. Onir needs to stop listening to Purvi and splash some ice cold water on her face. She needs to wake up and face reality. I just want everyone to find out about her kartoots and Arjun to take her to court and fight for the custody of his child so that he and Ovi can keep the baby.
