Chapter 8- Some Suhaag Raat

Arjun-Purvi's Apartment

Arjun placed Purvi on their bed. He pulled out a carry-on from the almari and began filling the bag with clothes.

"What are you doing?"Purvi said grabbing his wrist.

"Joh mujhe karna jahiye. We are leaving. I've booked two tickets to New York."

"What? New York?" Purvi stared agape.

Arjun sat on the edge of the bed and let out a sigh. Purvi's hands pressed his shoulders and rest her head on his back. Arjun squeezed a hand and let out a tear.

"Purvi, I don't want you to get hurt anymore." he whimpered and turned around.

"Mujhe kuch nahi hoga." she smiled.

"Am I supposed to take your word for it or Ovi's?" he fumed.

"Arjun," Purvi shouted as he began zipping the bag, "Arjun you can't do this to me!"

"Purvi, we are going." he said picking her up with one arm and grabbing the handle of the carry-on.

As he made his way to the door, Purvi threw a tumultuous tantrum. She squirmed her way out of Arjun's hold, subsequently falling on the floor. She let out cacophonous howls and began slithering towards the bedroom.

"Fine, Purvi! I'm going alone!" Arjun exclaimed as he opened the front door.

"Coward!" Purvi screeched and hurled the nearest glass canister of spices at him. Instead of hitting Arjun, the jar broke into a million shards upon contact with the wooden door.

Purvi cried in a corner of the apartment and Arjun took each step hesitantly down to his car. He made his way into the car but couldn't start the ignition. He rested his forehead on the steering wheel as tears fell to the floor. He couldn't turn back now; it wasn't safe. With an ounce of confidence left in the business tycoon, Arjun zoomed off.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

Arjun made his way up thousands upon thousands of steps to reach the Air India ticket counter. He didn't know if he wanted to cancel the tickets or board the plane. The conflicting options wrestled in his mind but when he got to the counter, his mind was hushed and his heart spoke.

"I'd like to cancel my tickets." he said in a low voice and slid his tickets across the counter.

"I'm sorry sir, but the tickets you've purchase are non-refundable," explained the agent, "I can't cancel them. Either you board the flight or you don't."

She slid the tickets back across the counter. Arjun left without picking up the tickets. He was drowning in regret and misery. He decided to cope with his feelings the only way he knew best and entered the Noir Bar. He ordered one Maltese Falcon after another and eventually became so intoxicated that he could barely keep his eyes open. Flavors a malted bourbon and chocolate coated his mouth. He drifted off into a deep sleep and drooled on the black linens on the table.

Arjun-Purvi's Apartment

It was two o'clock in the morning and Arjun hadn't returned. Purvi contemplated the comforting option of calling her aai and falling asleep in the lap of her aaji. She chose not to, however. She was Purvi Arjun Kirloskar now, and she couldn't fall back on her aai anymore. She decided to phone Arjun. The calls went through but nobody would answer. After leaving fifty-two messages, Purvi became engulfed by the growing drowsiness of medications she had taken. She fell asleep on cold, rigid tile.

Arjun's Dream

Purvi was sitting at her office desk in an ebony pencil skirt and peach, chiffon blouse. She was rapidly typing away on her keyboard only to be interrupted by the occasional lock of hair that fell over her eye. She rhythmically tapped her black pumps, catching Arjun's attention. He was mesmerized by her radiant appearance. He wanted to get close to her, but wondered how.

Pulling a red pen from his desk, he decided to mark errors in a file she had recently submitted. He paced his way towards and laid they file on her keyboard. Her fingers paused. Arjun bent over and placed his palms on top of hers. He buried his nose in her neck while her silky hair caressed his face. She smelled of roses on a summer day. Purvi became warm and blushed. She moved her heads toward Arjun. He looked up and their eyes met. He was entranced by her dark eyes and long lashes. He inched towards her face to kiss her, but she turned away.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport

"Excuse me, sir" a waiter shook Arjun's shoulder.

"What?" Arjun said gradually coming in touch with reality.

"You must pay your bill and leave. If you would like to sleep, there are hotels in the vicinity." he replied sternly.

"I'm sorry; I didn't know I fell asleep." Arjun apologized as he fidgeted through his wallet.

He slapped a credit card on to the table and brushed back his hair. The waiter charged his card and left. Arjun checked his phone and saw it was five o'clock. He arose from his chair and made his way downstairs. Please leave comments and feedback! 😃
