Chapter 7: It's Not Safe
Beep, beep, beep...
Arjun woke to the droning of hospital machines. It took him a moment to adjust his vision. He tilted his head to observe his surroundings. Noticing this movement, Archana arose from her chair in the corner and ran towards her son-in-law.
"Arjun, you woke up!" she cried with tears of relief.
"Aunty, Purvi kaha hain?" he asked trying to sit up.
"She's in the next room," Archana said bolstering him with a pillow, "she lost so much blood. Manav and I both had B- blood so we gave transfusions. She will make it but she's in a critical state."
Arjun rose from his bed but was restrained by a tube supplying him with a steady amount of glucose.
"Arjun, you can't remove that," Manav walked in, "you fainted in the car. You had low glucose so they hooked you up to this. It was so you could regain consciousness."
"Uncle, I have to see Purvi. Sister!" Arjun shouted Arjun to a woman passing the corridor.
"Yes?" walked in the nurse.
"I have to see my wife. She's in the other room. Please take this tube off of me." he begged.
"Alright, but you must return to your room in ten minutes." the nurse warned as she took off the tube.
"Shukriya." Arjun thanked.
Arjun slowly paced into the next room. Upon entering, his heart sank. Purvi was as pale as sand. Her ill appearance was exemplified by the contrast of crimson lipstick and smoky eye makeup. She seemed burdened by her heavy wedding gold set and bangles. Dozens of tubes pierced her veins. Tears immediately welled up in Arjun's eyes. He walked over to her and began removing her earrings. Purvi awoke the soft pulling of her ear lobe. She tilted her head towards the stimulus and her eyes met Arjun's eyes. His lips brushed hers, resulting in streams of tears running down both their cheeks. He quickly pulled away from the embrace.
"Purvi, when we get home, pack your bags." he said as he continued removing her ornaments.
"Par kyun?" she was perplexed.
"You're asking me why? Purvi," Arjun grabbed her shoulders, "has this event not affected you at all?"
"Kya?" she asked.
"Oh my god, Purvi. Kya tum yadaash bhi kho beti? Ovi has stabbed you. You could've died! It's not safe for us to be here anymore." he exclaimed.
"Arjun, I'm not scared and I'm not leaving my home."Purvi stated.
"Don't be a child, Purvi. It's risky for us to stay here. We have to leave." he reasoned.
"I'm not going anywhere." she said sternly.
"Kyun nahin?" he yelled and shook her, "You almost died! Stop being stupid and prideful and listen to me!"
She burst into cry and horribly howled. Within minutes, she began hyperventilating. The commotion caught the attention of a sister. The sister pushed Arjun out and sedated Purvi with an injection. Arjun returned to his bed and was disgusted with himself. He felt he shouldn't have treated his wife this way, but she was being inexplicably irrational.
"Arjun, kya hua?" Archana grabbed Arjun's shoulder.
"Aunty, I was explaining to Purvi that it is not safe for us to live here anymore." he began.
"Ha, toh phir?" Archana asked.
"So I told her we should move. But she wouldn't listen, Aunty. She was adamant on staying here," he bawled burying his face into the pillow, "why won't she listen to me?"
Archana was taken aback at the prospect of Purvi moving away from her. All her life, her daughter has been in arm's length. They had been each other's emotional support system for the past 18 years. With this stabbing, however, all of that was to change. "But it would change for the better," Archana thought. "Purvi and Arjun each other need each other. I will restrain my motherly affection for their welfare."
"Excuse me," knocked a nurse, "Mr. and Mrs. Arjun Kirloskar can leave tonight. The doctor has left their prescriptions at the front desk."
"Thanks." Arjun said rising from his bed.
He changed from his hospital gown to suit and went with his in-laws to get Purvi from the next room.
"Mr. Kirloskar," greeted a doctor in Purvi's room, "Purvi will not be able to walk for the next couple of days. Till then, please tend to all her ambulatory needs. Here's a wheelchair."
"That's alright." Arjun said pushing the wheelchair aside.
He lifted Purvi into his arms and walked with Manav and Archana to the front desk. He admired Purvi's incandescent appearance while she slept. He wished he could always protect her, always have her in his arms. He wanted to be forever lost in this moment, but fear clouded him. A volatile Ovi was near but Purvi was not complying with his escape plan.
