Ch. 9- A Size Too Big

Arjun-Purvi's Apartment

Arjun cracked open the door of the apartment and was greeted to the dissonance of clashing glass. Making his way in, he found Purvi sleeping, curdled into a ball in the corner. He tiptoed to the kitchen and retrieved a dustpan and brush to clean the mess that arose from their conflict. After glass shards had been thrown out and the rooms were straightened, Arjun changed out of his pinstripe three piece suit in grey sweats and a white tee. He then walked towards Purvi, but didn't know how to approach her. Being the calculative business man he was, he sat a foot away from Purvi and rehearsed what he would say. "First, I will apologize. Then I will convince her to take her medication. After that..." he thought, "well, let's see if she'll even talk to me."

Arjun gently shook Purvi's shoulder, and with no response, patted her head. Still, she didn't move. He scooped her into his arms and with their stomachs touching, Arjun felt his shirt dampening. He began panicking and rushed to place her on the bed. Blood began to drip out of her bandage. Horrified, Arjun tore his tee and tied the cloth over the cut. Before he could dial the doctor, Purvi reached out for Arjun's hand. He grasped on to her hand and met her fluttering eyes.

"Arjun," Purvi mouthed.

"Ha?" Arjun asked leaning in.

"Main teek hoon. Bas mujhe paani jahiye." she mumbled.

"Acha." Arjun said rushing out to get her water and her medication.

After taking the pills, Purvi drowsed off. Arjun, however, persisted she stayed conscious until she had eaten a warm meal. She assented and tried making her way to the bathroom.

"No, Purvi. Change here," he said handing her a cream cotton gown that was a size too big, "I'll make whip something up in the kitchen."

"Ok." she yawned.

Scanning the contents of their fridge, Arjun found a plastic container with her favorite, palak paneer. He heated the subji in a pan and began recalling the day he and Purvi had bought the extra large gown.

Flashback- Veena's Fashion

Arjun and Purvi had spent the day shopping for their flat. With only an hour left and temperatures rising, they decided to buy a few clothes. They passed by street vendors, but either the prices were too high or the quality was too low. Passing Veena's Fashion, Purvi's favorite shop, they decided to get a couple gowns.

"Purvi, kyun na hum yeh lethe?" Arjun asked presenting the large, cream gown.

"Yeh? I like the colour but don't you think it's too big?" she giggled.

"Wahi toh! So if my Purvi becomes an aai, she'll already have a comfy gown ready." he smiled.

"You're already planning for a baby?" she laughed.

"It's never too early." he reasoned.

Arjun-Purvi's Apartment

"Arjun!" called Purvi.

Snapping out of the memory, he turned off the gas and ran towards the room.

"Mujhe bahut bhook lagi hai." she whined, making a face.

"Acha, mein abhi khana le kar atha hoon." he chuckled.

Arjun dished up three rotis and plenty of palak paneer. He sat of the edge of the bed and fed Purvi.

"Arjun, eat with me." she complained.

"No, I'm full." he tore the roti.

"Kya 'I'm full'?" Purvi questioned.

She broke pieces of the roti and began feeding Arjun. In a matter of minutes, they had finished the plate. Arjun washed the dishes and helped Purvi to wash her hands. He carried her back on to the bed and laid next to her. An hour passed until a word was uttered.

"Purvi, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have overreacted." Arjun broke the silence.

"Arjun, it's not your fault. You did what was right. I don't know why I was so rude to you. I'" Purvi went on.

"Purvi," Arjun interrupted, "tumara gussa jaheez tha."

"I love you." Purvi began wheeping and buried her face into Arjun's chest.

"Shhh, it's ok yaar." he comforted.

Arjun patted Purvi's head till she fell asleep. He grasped onto her cotton shoulders until drifting off. Both could breathe a sigh of relief, safe in each other's arms.
