The Deshmukh Household ..... 2
"Oh hi Kaka...." A young man walked to the table.
Vishwaasrao put down his newspaper to look at his nephew. "So Sachin what are you doing tonight?"
"Going to a party of course."
"What party?"
"A friend of mine has bought a new car, so we are celebrating......."
"That's reason for celebration?"
"Of course........ life is celebration!"
"Sometimes I am surprised at how philosophical you get..."
"Dada, this boy just wants to enjoy. Does he have a care in the world? No, he has far more important things to do."
"Oh c'mon Ai, stop being a damp squib."
"Okay..... go for your party."
"Eh.... I need some......"
"Money?" Savita guessed right. "When will you understand the value of money?"
The phone rang.
Savita smiled and looked at the clock. She was sure it was Manav. Sachin beat her to the phone. She glared at him.
"Hello Dada............... I am having a tough time with my financers. Oh they are so miserly and keep a paisa to paisa account. I think you should start sending me some money. Your brother is in dire straits and has to literally beg for crumbs."
"You are so shameless ...... give me the phone.......Hello Manav, how are you, son?"
Damodar entered the room wearing a suit. He was short and stocky with a mop of salt and pepper hair and a beard that always needed a trim. But he said that was a part of his persona and never listened to his wife about a shave or a good haircut. He was quite different from Savita who was neat and prim. He smiled inwardly. No couple could be as different in personality or taste. But they had a good marriage between them. He knew he wouldn't be able to manage without her. Yet they had their differences too. Manav was a perfect blend of the two. He had his father's jolly nature but he had a streak of seriousness too. That was evident from his profession. He couldn't believe his son could have such active grey cells.
Damodar Deshmukh had just returned from signing a new show and was feeling generous. He handed Sachin a wad of notes, put his finger on his lips and winked. In many ways he knew his son took after him. Damodar was a loving father and loved his children immensely. Sachin of course had a special place in his heart.
"I'll call you back Manav.......I can see your father has given some moneyto Sachin .... as usual." She hung up.
"Why do you do this and encourage him?" Savita asked her husband crossly.
Damodar spun on his feet and bowed to her.
"Lord Byron's words.........
O talk not me of a name great in story
The days of our youth are the days of our glory
And the myrtle ........"
"That's enough of drama...........this is not a stage."
"Bye Ai, Baba..........man you are the best."
"Take care Sachin.........."
"Baba may I borrow your car? Please please?"
"Not the new one, take the old one"
"Baba I can't take Shravani out in that jalopy...."
"Really?" inserted his mother, "then take her in an auto. You are so cool Sachin, why don't you start a trend?"
Sachin had heard enough and was on his way.
"What does he see in that girl? She's just a rich businessman's spoilt daughter." Vishwaasrao said.
"Yes like Sachin is just a rich actor's unemployed son." Savita couldn't resist that remark.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manav put down the receiver of the phone. He gave a short laugh. Sachin would never change. How he loved his younger brother and how he missed him! He longed to meet all of them and be with them. But he had two years more here before he would return home for good.
He got up and went to put his dinner in the microwave. He had a special session this afternoon with Dr Fennerton and he wasn't going to miss it for the world.
The phone rang again. Was it Ayi calling back.
"Hello?"
"Hi Manav ...... this is Dana. Could we meet later this evening for a drink?"
"Yeah sure why not?"
Dana wanted to pair up with Manav. She wasn't obvious but he had read the signs alright. She was a nice girl who worked in the Path Lab. He was comfortable in her company but didn't find her irresistable. He was not going to encourage her and was hoping she would get the hint and let go.
