Inopportune Meeting .....
He was intrigued by what he saw. Did there seem some connection with his dream? He noticed the crutches placed near the sofa behind her and guessed who she was. This was Archana - the girl in the accident and the one his kid brother fussed over. She seemed to be still with her hand raised, her fingers opened daintily. Her eyes moved and her gaze caught him. Her hand dropped slowly back onto her lap as she seemed to stare at him. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she continued her scrutiny. Her other hand went to her nose and she sniffed as used her tissue. He came down one step at a time, taking his time as he assimilated his thoughts. He couldn't believe she could stare at him so openly. He looked keenly at her trying to ascertain whether her eyes were affected in the accident. The stairway was curved and he was almost at the end when he saw her close her eyes tightly. Her eyebrows furrowed in a grimace of mild pain and her hand went to her forehead and her fingers rubbed her eyes.
The main door opened. Shravani rushed in. Manav turned his head to look at her. He stopped on the stairway. Shravani was tiny and pretty in a way. She was not his type and he was quite sure she was not his brother's type either. Yet they seemed to be going about together. Not any more ..... his mother had confided in him. She was glad that the relationship had cooled off.
"Hi, Manav," Shravani said. "I am so glad to see you!"
"Hi Shravani ....... Good to see you too." Manav replied.
Arch stared at the figure that seemed familiar but she couldn't see his face properly. She tried her level best to take a good look at his features. Even in her dreams, she hadn't seen the face of the man and so she was trying desperately to get a glimpse of this one. She was trying to find some similarity in his gait, his demeanour and his stance. Her eyesight had improved since the accident but her eyes were still weak. He came down the steps slowly. He wore dark blue jeans with a white shirt with checks in red and grey. He slid his hand over the banister. His hair was well combed and grew down to his collar. There was a stubble on his lean cheeks. Her eyes began to water a bit. She closed her eyes tightly to dispel the tightness between her eyes. She lifted her hand to her forehead. She sniffed and began to smoothen away the stress. Her head was lowered so she didn't see Shravani enter.
"Come Archu, let's proceed to the eating room. I shall get the puran polis in a jiffy." She waited in case the young girl needed help. Then she thought better of it. She thought maybe Manav could help her and thus introduce himself. She turned and began to walk away.
Arch stood still as if someone had taken a shot at her. Who had called out? Manav? Why did he call her ballerina? Why were the words so familiar? Why did the voice seem to ring a bell? She struggled to keep her balance but the shock was too much. The crutches fell down with a clatter. Arch knew she was going to fall. She put her hands out to try and prevent herself from falling. An arm came from behind and held her firmly. Her fingers clutched the lapels of his shirt and she instinctively pressed herself to him for protection.
"Don't worry I have you safe. You seemed to be going the wrong way. I am sorry but why did you get so startled?"
Arch's face was close to his chest. Her feeble feet were of no use and she had to lean into him for support. She could inhale the talc he had used. His heartbeat was strong and skin warm. She had never felt so useless in her life before. She felt ashamed and small. Manav looked down at the head nestled against his chest. She didn't weigh more than a feather and was downright thin. He could feel the bones in her back. Her feet couldn't take her weight and she was holding onto to him for support. He heard her soft whimper. He was sensitive enough to understand that she was feeling ineffective in front of a stranger. He kept his hold on her but gently raised her chin. With his free hand he tucked her short hair in place. Her fair pale face was almost gamin-like. Her brown eyes were sad and accusing. Her fingers slipped down from his collar but clutched his shirt nevertheless. He noticed the hold was far from strong. Her shoulders were sagging under her own weight. From the feel of her back and its rigidity, he knew the upper back was okay. The fault lay in her lower back or legs or both. He pulled her up slightly. Her breath was coming out in gasps. Her cheeks seemed to turn pink. He turned her slowly so that her back was against him.
"Okay now slowly lift your crutches. I am holding on to you."
"No ....... I can't. My back hurts."
"C'mon....... give it a try." Manav cajoled. "Stop the minute it pains. Don't over exert."
She began to bend forward and was gritting her teeth. Suddenly she felt his palm pressing on the last veterbrae. She was extremely embarrassed and lost her concentration.
"Noooo ......."
He quickly turned her up and rubbed her aching back. He picked her up to place her on the sofa. He picked up her crutches and helped her up again. He looked at her. Her face was rebellious. Her chin was set and she didn't look pleased at all.
"Why did you call me ballerina? Do I look like one to you? Crutches and all?" She asked him tartly.
"Yes," he said simply and gave a disarming smile. "By the way, I am Manav......Sachin's brother."

Hi Skepi,
Really liked this part and the prev one a lot - sometimes it seems v wierd the dream thing - but u showed it v naturally. It is said that the dreams/visions seen on the threshold of death remain etched in yr memory forever. I have used that angle here. I wasn't sure whether it would go down well with the readers but that was a chance I had to take. Also it will probably be this vision which will finally make Arch leave her inhibitions and go to Manav. Anyway I am not going to let out anymore of the story now. 😆I like both ur manav and archu chrs equally, the best characterization in PR forum till date IMHO - Thanq ...... uh what is IMHO? they seem to be v normal as a 20 something upper middleclass gud luking, well to do,decent ppl but hope to see that 1 thing that sets them apart as a couple -I wanted the pair to be a normal decent one having and enjoying the small comforts of everyday life. Fighting for existence is not very conducive for light romances. My POV of course.u know, like Jamaal Malik and Lathika in Slumdog Millionaire - u can sense the love and attraction, entrenched in them subconsciously - as they both said,I think of u every moment,in a careless way, but that is wat that kind of love is - its a type of invisible pagalpan -Skepi,dear,please do justice to both chrs - none have done it unfortunately - either its a type of insane rationalization to 'understand' love or one of the chrs simply bursts out of dying embers and declare flames of love😕The lead chrs have lost a lot of credibility by their inability express love at oppurtune moments, nor showing definitive dilemmas or anguishRegarding yr expectation of seeing some orderliness in the building up of the chrs and seeing the realisation and admittance of love .......... I just hope I can deliver. I'll do my best. Promise.Looking fwd to reading ur entire FF to completion for a satiated PR dear ! I will complete it...Saffy
