Aai!

Why are you worried? Don't you trust your eldest? Your command is a writ I can not transgress.

Your injuries are the wounds I will not disremember. Once I have failed cushioning those blows but twice it will not take place. Once we have lost Sachin but twice he will not be lost.

It is a premium of the life that you are not reconciled to Archana, my own life. But do I not owe you more then a life? For have I not witnessed your valiant fights in those stormy days when Baba was expressly engaged in his devotion to the art of stage and being thoroughly refused by the fate? Were you not the one who was satiating our hunger while keeping your own hunger in hide? And how can I forget those darkest nights when the heat of my body was in spate in illness? For you were there to hold me in your bosom and driving away that nightmarish delirium and nourishing me back to the health. And have I not as a 12 year boy accompanied you to that pawnbroker's shop with your meager adornments in a bid to keep us sustained?
That day too did I not ask you? Aai? Why are you worried! Don't you trust your eldest!

I must have earned a lot of sneers today but I can not resist this one. For a long time this was an explanation making a silent encroachment in to my mind when ever Manav's scripting was shown blinding where Aai is concerned in spite of his greatly sensible mind. Why is he overlooking all her pettiness? Why is he turning blind eyes to her atrocities? Or why is he single-mindedly listening to only one parent? His lasting Imprints must have been formed in early childhood in the time of poverty when Savita must have done all of the above or some kind acts to him whether step or not. Why he is not listening to Baba a kinder heart? That is easier to explain. Where was that kind Baba when he was forced to give up his study and start earning at a very tender age? Was it not Father's duty [pardon chauvinism] to provide? Should he [bless his kind heart] not have stopped a 12 year old child from giving up his studies and taking up hard manual labour?

This does not exonerate Savita of her crimes. She almost well deserved jail treatment. I am wincing at remembering her road show and office maneuvers besides numerous instances of pettiness. For all her childhood kind acts she might have been only forced to do them as in a normal course. She might well be feigning her affections [to a step son] and chief architect of Manav's early bondage. Or as well, she might be genuine in Manav's case. Her greed for gold may also be condoned in Manav's eye if he has seen her parting with hers at an early age. In Manav's eye she is Aai.

This is the first time I have written something from my own imagination and not actually showed by telecast [but at least neither contradicted by any].And creatives may come up turning everything up-side down [Their capabilities are unbound].But this is the only angle I can think of at the moment. I will be enriched with any other angle that I may have missed completely.

@samarth: Awesome piece of work, samarth, and I completely agree with you, in fact in the early days of the serial there was a scene in which Manav tells Archana that his Aai has always longed for the smallest happiness, but never got it, so she couldn't resist wearing Archana's jewels for once. It was a very sweet and emotional scene.
Manav's respect and tolerance for his Aai definitely dates back to the time when he must have seen his Aai sacrificing for her children's sake. It made him the responsible and caring son he is today. Unfortunately, it is this count that makes his Aai feel today that she has a right to demand from him and squeeze out kurbanis at the cost of his life.
Great post!

@nikitagmc

So something was actually telecast which is consistent with the hypothesis. Thanks for this input. This must be from earlier episode I missed.

@ readers
But where are the other angles? Or the scenario presented is accepted with out protest? That is odd considering her ancient and her son's recent unpopularity.

Samarth
I agree with u . The dyfunctional relationship between SAvita and Damodar is far more complicated than meets the eye .
It is the chicken or egg first question . Did Damodar's slip phase in his acting career lead to his drinking and the loss of income ............that changed Savita to the harsh gutter fighter that she became for sheer survival of her 3 children ? If he escaped in his drinks , the full onus perhaps rested on her alone and she clawed her way to the surface instead of drowning .
There is another angle for it too . Basic nature never changes so Savita must have been this way only ...........the only thing being Damodar must have been able to bear it first as he had his succesful acting career . When failure struck , he didnt have it to escape to , so he started drinking . Her nature worsened with the circumstances as she resorted to gutter fighting for survival .
She wasnt alone though , Kakas support was somewhat there ,, always . I prefer to choose this explanation above the former as I strongly believe the fundamental nature doesnt change till a person dies .
Still , she got a raw deal in life . And Manav being the eldest noticed her struggle and hence the sympathy factor . He himself worked since 16 and knew the struggle . It is a common bond they share ...........the knowledge of that struggle .
Lovely , lovely perspective . Mothers can be of diffrent kinds , not necessarily in the same mould of Bhavna and Sulochna . I note often how Rassika is a mother too . Undoubtedlly she loves Manju , although her ideas of love r not typical . She doesnt believe in teaching her daughter to be submissive , caving in , neither does she believe in teaching her daughter to put in laws before her blood family . She believes in looking after Manjus interests , not everyone else's as they r frankly never ending . Rasika frankly believes in one policy in life ........Either you be happy or the world will be happy and she doesnt hesitate to teach her daughter to choose the You be happy option . These r difffrent forms of the mother and each lesson they individually teach is extremely valuable .
The commonality is all of them r animals [ for mothers r animals ] who protect their young in the best possible way they think they know .

Hi all,
I think Samarth and Kool felt the need to analyze Savita because unlike Rasika, many of whose actions stem from sheer malice towards the Karanjkars, Savita's motives and their roots in early deprivation are quite transparent. It appears that the chicken of damodar's drunken habits came before the egg of her harshness, because in the scene where she grumbles to herself about Archana and Manav's proposed trip to Mahabaleshwar, she says something to the effect of "Mujhe kissi-ne honeymoon- voneymoon ke liye nahi pooccha. Bas shadi karaee aur de diya is bewdey ke haath!" Clearly her marriage has been hard and loveless and she has had to support the children on meagre earnings, often alone. With that relationship as a model, she can hardly be expected to be indulgent of wives whose husbands appear completely besotted with them. And when that besotted husband is the elder son she has depended on for a decade and a half, jealousy is naturally combined with fears about the control of purse-strings and the natural emotions of a mother at "losing" her son to another woman, which happens even when all the hardships don't apply. One scene in particular stands out: during the early days of their separation, Manav protests about something she says in regard to Archana, and indicates that he hopes for a reconciliation; she rounds on him furiously and asks " AZUN tujhi haus nahi mitlee??". There's a lot of anger there, and a lot of wistfulness; she was never anybody's "haus", and the word itself - meaning something somewhere between "fancy" and "whim" and "pasttime" (like the Hindi/Urdu "shouk"), reveals her hope that Manav's obsession with Archana will die out soon, and she herself will once more become the most important person in his life.
Good night to those of you turning in, and good morning to those starting their day back home in good old desi-land.
