Part 6
Kya kabhi is gham ka koi kinaara hoga?
Ya is dard ke darya mein humen doob hi jana hai?
Suman felt her heart still. She was very anxious today. Why was her heart feeling so alive today when it had remained hopeless for the past five years? She could feel it in the air; the change. She was sure something was about to happen, but she didn't understand what. What was so different today? What was making her look at the front door again and again? This anticipation and weird sense of hope that soon the happiness of their house would return back was making her feel different than before. She watched towards the door again, making Dhara turn towards it too.
"Kya baat hai Ma? Aap yun baar baar darwaze ki taraf kyun dekh rahi hain?" Dhara finally asked. She was doing her work. She had started to sell homemade food. Now that she had no reason to make schemes to save her family, due to losing everything, she had plenty of time. There was a chaotic peace in her life that seemed very fragile. She was scared a gust of wind would blow her world apart. And her mother in law was behaving unlikely.
"Pata nahin kyun Dhara... Aisa lag raha khushiyan lautne wali hain is aangan ki. Mujhe aisa mehsoos ho raha hai ki is ghar ki raunak wapas aane wali hai." Suman said as she watched the door once more. Dhara herself looked towards the door to see what Suman meant. "Ja Dhara... Aaj darwaze par kumkum se rangoli bana de. Mera dil kehta hai ki humen swagat karne ke liye tayyar rehna hoga." Dhara nodded and went inside to get everything ready. She didn't have much hope left but she would humor Suman. If this gave her peace then Dhara wanted to give her that peace.
Suman had stuck by her despite all her follies. Sometimes Dhara wondered what would become of her if Suman had decided to leave too... She would have shattered. Suman was the earth on which she stood firm.
Dhara arranged kumkum on a plate and began to walk towards the door to do as Suman had asked of her. Her heart was heavy like it had been for the past five years.
The moment she reached the door to open it so she could go outside, the door was pushed open from the outside after some knocks. The sudden opening of the door dislodged the plate from her hands and all the colors placed upon it scattered everywhere around her, coloring her and the newcomer red. The plate fell down with a bang and the newcomer shrieked while closing their ears tightly. Dhara began to cough along with the newcomer, who started to wave their hands to clear the air. Dhara's eyes remained closed as she felt them burning slightly but soon she began to open her eyes to see the newcomer standing before her and doing the same, while covered in the kumkum, just like herself. They looked like they were mirror images standing on either side of the threshold.
The slight widening of both their eyes along with a minute tremble of their lips was the same. And even the tears that had begun to fill the eyes was the exact same. But inside them both, the feelings that crashed around their souls was vastly different. Within Dhara, swirled pain, loss and ages of regret. Within the woman before Dhara though, the feelings warred. There was melancholy, there was pain, there was contempt and also complaints.
"Raavi..." Dhara breathed as she cried while she smiled. She held Raavi's hands in her own and sunk to her knees as she sobbed. Raavi was crying too. "Raavi... Mera baccha!" Dhara cried helplessly as the shards of her began to pierce through her soul making her cry out in pain again.
Suman began to wheel herself towards the door when she heard Dhara's cries. Raavi remained outside as she witnessed the woman before her break apart just by her sight. This woman, had been the one to teach her about life, about love, about giving selflessly and living for others. She taught Raavi about sacrifices. But she was also the woman who taught her about pain, about regrets... Raavi knew that Dhara had lived for others, selflessly loved, sacrificed the most important happiness for many years, listened to the taunts and barbs of Suman and still survived with a smile. Raavi also knew that a few months of selfishness did not trump over years and years of sacrifice and selflessness, but what could she do? Dhara's months selfishness had taken away her happiness and gifted her with tears for ages. She had been deprived of her rightful love due to Dhara. So was she being excessive if she wanted to pull her hands from Dhara's and scolded her with the meanest words she could find? She was human after all. She was also a soft hearted fool. She was a dobi. And this dobi couldn't find it in her to go through with her wants in hurting Dhara. So she sank down to the ground too, on the other side of the threshold and began to cry softly as she watched Dhara cry. This dobi wanted to place her head on Dhara's lap like she used to before and cry out. She wanted to let her pain flow from her eyes and get absorbed in her Dhara di's lap so she could at least begin to heal. She wanted the cracks that had appeared on her heart to mend. She wanted to be at complete peace...
Dhara let her hands ago and cupped her face as she kissed Raavi's head, forehead and then the tears too. She touched Raavi's shoulders as she looked her up and down to make sure she is right here.
"Kahan chali gayi thi tu? Tujhe pata hai maine in paanch saalon mein tujhe kitna yaad kiya? Dobi! Maine ghalti ki! Mujhe saza deti! Jhagadti ladti par yun chod kar to na jaati!” Dhara pulled Raavi gently. Raavi moved forward and crossed the threshold straight into Dhara’s arms as she held her tightly and they both cried. Dhara stroke Raavi’s head and kissed her temple as she cried more. “Mujhse bahut saari ghaltiyan hui hai Raavi. Pan ye baat tujhe bhi pata honi chhiye ki maine hamesha tujhe apna baccha hi samjha! Bas main tum sab ke saath sahi nahin kar saki. Apni barson purani iccha ko pane ke liye apna sab kuch har gayi. Par kya in paanch salon ke pashchataap ke baad bhi mere liye koi maafi nahin hai? Kya mere in paanch saalon ki prarthna aur ansuon ka koi mol nahin hai? Raavi kya meri ghalti itni badi thi ki tum sab mujhe chod kar chale gaye? Aur jo peeche raha woh bhi to waisa nahin raha jaise pehle tha... In paanch saalon mein koi aisa pal nahin beeta ki maine tum logon ki lautne ki khwahish nahin ki, koi aisi raat nahin beeti jab mein chen se so payi hoon. Meri nazar ghadiyon ki suyion par atak kar reh gui hai Raavi. Mera intezaar kya kabhi khatam hoga? Aisa lagta hai jaise main rasta bhool kar ek registaan mein pahunch gayi hoon. Yahan na paani hai na chaaun. Dhoop ki kadiyon mein main jhulas kar reh gayi aur mera Shiva hi nahin hai mujhe chaav dene. Maine shayad kuch zyada hi dhakel diya use. Woh chod kar chala gaya mujhe. Aise rootha ki wapas mud kar bhi na dekha. Main haar gayi Raavi... Main haar gayi...” Raavi was crying as she heard Dhara. Every word she uttered felt like it was finally breaking a dam within her and bursting out. How many years had her Dhara di punished herself with this regret? Raavi held Dhara back and shook her head, shushing. The roles seemed to have reversed. She was trying to soothe her Dhara di gently. Raavi remembered how this same woman would shush her put little Raavi’s head on her lap, crooning to her soft melody. Now she seemed to be doing it for Dhara who was beside herself in her grief. She was softly asking Dhara to calm down when she lifted her head and found Suman, who was watching them with a tad bit watery eyes but a blank face. She felt her heart stutter. Would she be blamed once again? She was steeling her heart when Suman signaled her to come forward. Raavi gulped, remembering all the harsh words of her mother in law. She reminisced her taunts, her name calling, her gaslighting. She remembered her actions that most of the times seemed so harsh and bitter. She trembled. Five years had passed by and she considered herself stronger than the old Raavi and yet when she faced Suman, she felt herself go meek. She steeled herself and straightened her spine. This time she wouldn’t allow her self respect be wounded.
Granted... Granted, that she had erred, made mistakes, used words that shouldn’t have been used, she had been violent, she had also been a dobi when she had dealed with everything. Granted that she had made mistakes. Some stupid, some silly, some awful. But she had also put up with the same things too. She had also been put through much more hurt...
And yet...
And yet... She wanted this woman to accept her once. Like she had done at her wedding. She wanted her gentleness which she had gotten after her disastrous wedding. Everything had just hone to drain after the pooja. Their relationship had never been properly repaired. They had put everything behind only to arrive at same point once more. She didn’t know how to face this woman. But however she face her, she would do it with strength. She wouldn’t hear barbs or taunt ever again.
Dhara had felt her tremble. So when she raised her head and saw Raavi watching something with all her concentration, she turned. Maa... She had forgotten about Suman. She smiled and was about to say something when she saw her mother in law signal towards Raavi to come forward. She began to open her mouth to say something in order to ease Raavi and Suman’s meeting, but she stayed put after Suman hastily raised her hand towards Dhara. Raavi detached herself from Dhara and moved towards Suman. When she reached Suman, she was pulled to the ground by Suman. She fell on her knees and as the air stilled around them, Suman pulled her forward and hugged her as she sobbed softly.
Kabse tere anchal ki khushboo,
Mujhe jagaye rakhti hai Maa,
Main raaton ko so nahin paati,
Tujhe soch kar...
Suman touched her face gently with trembling hands that stroke her hair afterwards and then she kissed Raavi’s forehead with a gentleness that was new to Raavi. Raavi sobbed as she raised to her knees and hugged Suman tightly.
Maine saalon se tujhe socha hai,
Tujhe maanga hai jee bhar kar,
Tere ehsaas ke liye tarsi hoon main,
Aaj ro lun teri godi main sar rakh kar...
She broke down. As she sunk back to her shins, Suman supported her as she herself cried. She still couldn’t believe Raavi was here. She kissed Raavi’s hair and stroke her head as she smiled while she cried. Dhara was crying to with a soft smile as she watched them both.
“Meri Raavi...” Suman whispered. Raavi stilled and closed her eyes in utter peace.
Tere labon se mera naam hai,
Ya sukoon ka darya hai?
Ye jo thanda sa ehsaas hai
Main na janoon ye kya hai...
“Maa...” She whispered brokenly as she remained seated at Suman’s feet.
“Mere Shiva ki Gowri. Meri ghar ki khushi!” Suman was calling out. “Mere kiye ke liye beta sab se maafi maang liya bas tujhse aur Shiva se nahin maang paayi.” Suman whispered. Raavi stilled. His name was her Achilles heel. Listening to it brought back too many memories, happy and sad. “Main tujhse kya bolun? Kya kya na kaha maine tujhe. Tune hamesha meri izzat ki hai. Itne saalon se main chahti thi ki tu ek baar aa jaye beta. Main ek baar tujhe gale lagakar bol sakun ki maaf krde. Maine apne buzurgon ke tarreqe se tum bahuon ko rakhna chaha. Mujhe to tum teenon ko Maa banke palna tha. Main kar nahin paayi. Yeh meri ghalti thi.” Raavi cried harder. She had wanted Suman to accept her wholeheartedly always.
Meri nazron ne tujhe dhoondha hai jee bhar kar,
Teri ek muskaan ko tarsi hoon jeevan bhar,
Bas ek baari mujhe gale se lagale tu,
Pyaar se mujhko bhi beti pukaare tu...
Maa...
“Meri to betiyan bhi nahin hain. Tum hi to betiyan ho. Mujhe maaf kar degi na Raavi?” She asked. Raavi lifted her head and nodded eagerly. This was what she had needed. She cried softly. “Kahan chalo gayi thi?” Suman asked gently.
“Mujhe bas akele rehna tha. Mujhe waqt chahiye tha! Yahan se door. Main bikharne wai thi Maa! Mujhe khud ko sametne ke liye waqt chahiye tha. Main thak chuki thi har din ki ladaiyon se. ye parvati Shiva ko pane ki tapasya mein thak chuki thi. Mujhe lag raha tha ki main kuch bhi kar loon Shiva ke liye kabhi zaroori nahin ban paaungi. Woh hmesha mujhe aise hi dekhega, unimportance ke saath. Aur main bas bhaagna chahti thi yahan se. apni parchayi se bhi.” She cried. Suman gently stroke her head and sniffled as she wiped her tears with a corner of her Saaree. “Main thak gayi thi Maa. Main thak gayi hoon. Itna door bhaag liya. Khush bhi thi. Par adhoori thi. Bahut adhoori. Aap sab ki kami khalti thi par fir jo kuch bhi hua tha woh manzar mere saamne aate the aur main chup reh jaati thi. Mujh mein wapas aa kar woh sab sehne ki himmat nahin bachi thi Maa!” Raavi cried as she told Suman. Her throat was constricting, making it difficult for her to speak. So she fell silent as she cried. Suman hugged her again.
“Har raat ke baad savera aata hi hai Raavi. Hum soch lenge ki yeh humara savera hai. Hum shuru se shuruaat karenge beta...” Suman told her softly. She nodded. Suman lifted her head and then with her hand she beckoned Dhara who rushed towards her. Suman made Dhara sit beside Raavi and cupped a side of their cheek with her hands. “Main Suman Pandya hoon. Gautam, Dev, Shiva aur Krish ki Maa. Aur ab main tumhari bhi Maa hoon. Tumhare ghar mein tum donon ka swagat hai.” She whispered. Raavi and Dhara sank to her lap as their tears intensified.
“Thank you Maa! Thank you so much.” Raavi whispered as she felt herself lighten up for the first time in the past five years.

Dhara watched Raavi as she placed her luggage in the store room, her room, their room. She turned towards Dhara who was smiling softly and smiled too. Her Maasi hadn’t kicked up a fuss over her decision to come and stay here when Raavi asked her via a call. Maybe Prafulla had always known that Raavi would take this decision. But five years and also every tragedy that hit the Pandyas had mellowed Prafulla finally. She also thought that Raavi staying here was better than her going back to Mumbai. So she smiled as she let Raavi settle here. Mausapa and Maasi herself had brought over her luggage from their home. Her stuff would also be dropped here when it would arrive. But for now... Raavi was where she belonged.
She lost her smile when she thought about the other occupant of this room, Shiva...
She hadn’t seen any garland on his picture, thank goodness. But they still spoke of him like he was no more. Why? She needed to know as soon as possible. She turned towards Dhara...
“Kya hua tha paanch saal pehle Dhara di? Shiva kahan hai...” She finally asked.
