Part Seven- Like Newlyweds
They wandered around the town either on foot or via rikshaw. Even though they had a budget being from a small town setting and upbringing, the two of them were now enjoying as if their wedding was a few days ago instead of months ago.
Raavi smiled to herself as Shiva allowed her to slip her hand in his. It felt so natural yet so different from what they had always been towards each other.
An elderly couple had spotted them earlier when they were on the well-known outdoor recreational area near the lake .
“Harish don’t they look like a newlywed couple?,” the older woman exclaimed with glee.
Shiva had heard her first and loosened his grip on Raavi’s hand.
“Kya hua Shiva?”
He hinted towards the older couple.
She grinned realizing he was a bit hesitant showing PDA in front of others.
“Shiva tum mere ek laute pati ho , aur vaise bhi yeh log toh anjanbees hain,” she assured him.
“Haan lekin..,” he trailed off.
“ Yeh Somanth nahin hain mere bhoonath,” she insisted.
“ Amrita why are you gushing? Have you not seen a newlywedded pair after us?,” Harish hissed.
She rolled her eyes at him.
Amrita and he had two children that lived overseas. They never got to see them except for facetime every week. She had a habit of blessing any newly married couple.
Harish worried about their future. If someday they got into trouble, who would help them?
His wife in a hurry to catch up to Shiva and Raavi nearly fell into them. He hurried over to make sure she hadn’t hurt them or herself, but he was pleasantly surprised to see Raavi had held her up and immediately started to check for injuries.
“Thanks beta, for catching my hyper excited wife. You know our kids don’t live close by. So she rushes around to bless others,” he admitted.
“ Amrita are you ok my sweetheart .” he asked her before she fretted he was forgetting about her.
“ Main theek hoon Harish. What are your names? For some reason you both remind me of another couple,” she admitted.
Raavi and Shiva exchanged looks.
They didn’t realize who else could she have known that they resembled.
Raavi spoke up for them.
“ Main Raavi hoon aur yeh mere pati Shiva hain,” she introduced them formally.
Amrita did the motions of blessing them and they both reached down to touch their feet.
“ Raavi if it isn’t too much to ask, may I have your number? You see our children have abandoned us years before. I have no idea what sins we have done to deserve this,” she almost choked up.
Harish laid an assuring hand on her shoulder.
“ Amrita Auntie, may I call you Ma? You see my mother-in-law is like a mother for me but I lost my real mother when I was a child. If you don’t mind aad se Shiva aapka dhamad aur main aapki beti ban sakti hoon,” Raavi offered with all of her heart.
Shiva swore in that moment, he could not have fallen more in love with this woman.
“ Well if that is the case, you both should come tomorrow for dinner in our home. This must be made official.” Harish declared.
Amrita was beyond touched.
“ Theek hai. Aaj se tum dono humare aapne ho hamesha ke liye. I also want to say if you have children, you are to bring them to meet us often,” she requested.
Raavi paused and looked at Shiva.
He nodded.
He was not sure when they would be blessed with a child, but when that auspious day arrived, they would surely invite them.
Part Eight
Raavi and Shiva were lounging around the inn’s sitting room. They had luckily arrived during the nonseasonal time of year according to the manager. Shiva intermittently caressed her arm or her waist from time to time. It made her feel loved. She never expected she would be able to be this carefree with her husband.
First of all she never expected to be this truly happy. When she had proposed the idea, her greatest hope was to strengthen their relationship to at least be more cordial than they had been their whole lives prior to this trip. Secondly, she never expected to be in love in the true sense like she was feeling now.
Shiva nearly dropped the paper from his hands, when he felt her lips on his cheek.
“ Yeh kise liye chipaki?,” he whispered in her ear huskily.
“Baas aise maan kiya,” she muttered.
He dropped the paper to the side and cupped her chin.
“ Should we move into the room and continue whatever this further?,” he teased.
She nudged him in the rib cage.
“ We have to leave soon. Remember auntie and uncle called us tonight for dinner? I should have asked if I could have used the kitchen here to make something to bring. You know what, next time we come here from Somanth , I am going to make whatever their favorites are. I can always ask Dhara Bhabhi for tips in case I don’t know how to make it,” she declared.
“ Relax, I think Amrita Auntie has already rubbed off on you. Chalo the bike is also fixed now. We won’t need to look for a taxi or riskshaw in case it gets late,” he stated.
The couple got ready and headed out to the address.
They were stunned to realize it was an old age home. They suddenly realized the plight of the lovely couple they had met the day before.
Now Raavi was feeling worse about not purchasing anything food wise. She had brought a housewarming gift as it was their first time seeing them in their home. Perhaps they had a spot for the gift in their room.
They entered the reception to inquire about the couple.
The young girl appeared teary eyed.
The fear Raavi had in her pit of her stomach increased and exploded up to her chest leading her to cry out in shock and disbelief.
Amrita Auntie had died.
The other members were surrounding a dead body and Harish uncle wept alone by his wife’s side. Their children were not present.
Shiva held Raavi and supported her as they sat down to grief with the others.
One of the ladies assumed Raavi was their daughter, and ushered them to sit besides Harish.
“Harish Uncle, yeh kaise hua?,” Raavi cried.
“ She had stage 4 lung cancer. She was hoping she would last long enough for our children to return home, so she could..,” he trailed off.
Shiva gave him an assuring pat on his back.
“ I am so sorry uncle. Had we known we would have been here yesterday itself.”
“Those few moments over tea and meeting you both yesterday were the happiest moments we have had since her diagnosis. Promise me something, that you will honor Amrita’s memory and never leave each other alone, like she has me,” Harish lamented.
One of his friends came over to comfort him. They muttered something about his son not being here. If they only knew the truth.
They both felt numb. They joined the other people at the inn for dinner. They explained why they had returned so soon from their outing. The manager also sympathized with poor Harish. He had no one left besides his friends at the old age home.
Hours later when they remained awake staring up at the ceiling because they could not believe how life could change in a matter of a few hours or moments.
“ Raavi, ghar chalte kal subha,” Shiva declared.
She turned to face him.
“ I guess you are right. This made me realize how fragile life is. Amrita Auntie made me feel like I had my mother back again . I mean don’t get me wrong, I love Suman Kaki too, just..”
Shiva laughed.
“ Don’t worry chipkaki. Praufalla Mami probably left you longing for your mother. Whether it was our family or you, she always looked out for her benefit first. Who would feel loved in that kind of situation. I am sorry I misjudged you so many times,” he declared.
She snuggled closer into his arms.
“Agar humari ki beti huyi ek din, kya uska naam Amrita rak sakte hain?”
Shiva smiled.
“ Of course . It is a beautiful name and our daughter would be so blessed to have that name,” he replied.
He kissed her forehead.
“ Shiva there is one more thing I wanted to tell you,” Raavi said.
“ Bol na,” he urged.
“ My kaka met me at the college before our wedding,” she started to say.
She went on to tell him the whole story and how in a few weeks time , the money would be released.
“ I want to expand Pandya store’s services. I want it to be a mini warehouse with a bit of everything like the bigger stores out in America and such,” she said happily.
Shiva was stunned.
“ You could have used that money for anything! I mean you could have put it towards your masters or opened your own boutique ,” he declared.
Raavi leaned back.
“ Yes I could have but Shiva, my wishes aren’t mine alone. I have to respect our family and you. After all ek laute pati tum ho mere,” she declared.
“ I am so glad we got married!,” Shiva quipped.
“Now I am going to remind you of this moment every time you fight with me bhootnath!”
“ Aree chipaki, I can be mean if you prefer. Vaise I love riling you up,” he hissed.
“ Tum bhi na! Shaant ho jaate hain. Baaki log complain karenge humare baare mein,” she said worried.
He rolled his eyes at her and pulled her back to his firm chest.
“ Let’s be quiet while I do this then,” he whispered and he leaned into kiss her.
part 8 up hope you like it!
Part Nine
Prafulla Mami was pacing around their aagan the next afternoon when Shiva and Raavi arrived home from their trip.
She stopped short seeing them back . What intrigued her was this gunda types was holding her niece’s hand.
“Raavi meri beti where have you been? I thought this monster would have maligned you by now!,” she wailed loudly.
“ Arree o Mami, yeh meri biwi hain in full sense ,” Shiva sputtered out in his natural self.
Raavi gasped.
Did he just say that out loud! She immediately reddened. Mami grabbed herself by the chest and feigned faint. Anita came running to find her mother swooning. The others were alarmed at her state.
“Kya hua Mumma?,” Anita stammered as she scrambled to hold her upright.
“Isne Raavi ka fayda utha!”
Raavi stepped in front of Shiva and glared at Prafulla a fierceness only Mata rani would show a person who had harmed an innocent.
Shiva wanted to laugh at the absurdity of the situation.
“Masi Ma! How dare you! Meri marzi thi aur yeh mera aur mere pati ki beech ki baat hai!”
Dhara looked on with wonder at how Raavi respectfully defended her position. Suman was annoyed at the dramatics of Prafulla. The woman just wanted to take and cause drama no matter where. Gautam had stopped for lunch they had been about to eat, when this had occurred.
“Prafulla Mami I respectfully ask you not bring this matter to all of our neighbors. As you can see Raavi and Shiva are fine. So whatever your concerns were, are apparently invalid,” Gautam declared.
“Ji haan. Mami I can offer you some tea and refreshments, however only if you respect your son-in -law along with all of our hospitality from here on in,” Dhara advised.
Prafulla recovered somewhat and straightened up.
“ When I heard you two ran off , I was worried for your safety Raavi. Lekin ab lagta hai ki tum iss gunde, I mean iss Shiva ki hogayi hai aur iss Parivar ki bahu banegi hai. I will respect that,” she stated grudgingly.
Her plans to separate them have gone in vain. She had wanted better for Raavi. However perhaps like her sister had done and ran off married someone not of their parents choice, she had agreed to Dhara’s request to save Raavi, that she could marry Shiva instead.
They had lunch and before Prafulla left, Raavi revealed the reason behind her wanting to go away like she had.
Suman and Dhara were pleasantly surprised.
“ Dek Shiva, you used to never like Raavi for our family. Now look she has decided to use her inheritance to expand our business,” Gautam said.
“ You are right Goumbi. I realized this past week that everything happened for a great valid reason. Raavi was the one for me, but for months maybe years I resented her. Pata nahin kya maine sochta uss waqt,” he replied.
His brother clasped him on his shoulder as they walked Prafulla and Anita to their front door.
“ Prafulla Mami aram se jana theek hai,” Shiva said sarcastically.
“ Ab aap aate rehna. Humari Raavi ka ghar hain ab hamesha ke liye ,” Dhara said as she too approached with Suman.
Prafulla gave her a blank stare but noted the slight smile playing on Suman’s face. Her sister-in-law had won after all. She had Raavi and the inheritance at her will.
Hours later, when Shiva and Raavi were allowed back in their room, they were amused to see the sugahraat set up.
They chuckled to each other.
“Krish, Dhara Bhabhi and Rishta bhi na,” Raavi said trying not to blush.
Shiva grasped her wrist and pulled her back as she tried to hide her blushing face.
“Shall we humor them?”
“Shiva!”
“You told Mami you consented to whatever transpired between us,” he hissed.
“So she was trying to make you look bad. Tum mere ek laute pati ho, main teri insult hote dek nahin sakti,” she insisted back.
“Itna pyaar karti ho mujhe se?”
“Nahin utse bhi zyaada,” she replied.
“ You know I will always love our nok-jok. But I think it’s time to start working on our Amrita,” he said.
“Kya? Abhi toh..”
“Practice makes perfect chipkali!”
“ Shiva tu bhi na!”
Author’s note
I would love to dedicate this story for anyone who ever had to fight for their dreams or felt like they could not achieve them. When there is health and time left, use it to the wisest. Sometimes we meet people that regret many things. For example many women from my mother’s generation didn’t end up having careers or getting educated after high school. Years later life happened and they wished they had tried to go back to school or done some solid training to have something to fall back on. I like how in the actual show they are showing even men have these regrets and have to sacrifice their dreams and education for their families or due to some society pressures.
I hope you all have enjoyed this story. This is the end unless you would like an epilogue. For India Forum viewers, I was unable to edit the thread title each time I updated, so sorry about that. Hope you will go to wattpad and read the story there in case you missed any parts, and please leave feedback so if I write another story for this awesome onscreen couple I will do so. I don’t want to comment too much on their personal lives but I hope Kanwar and Alice remain good friends whether or not they get married or not is up to destiny and their wishes I guess.
Take care,
Sonali
thanks so much for reading! I will write the epilogue whenever I get the chance!
Epilogue
Four years later..
Shiva returned home from work Friday afternoon early to pick up his children from playschool. Raavi had conceived shortly after their adventure little over four years ago.
They had hired more employees over the years because Raavi’s inheritance and ideas had brought Pandya store to new heights. Rishita now handled PR, Dev handled the business office with Goumbi. Krish had matured and decided to help Shiva with imports and exports sides of things. Raavi, Dhara Bhabhi handled the boutique when they were not home attending to each other’s children.
Shiva approached the playschool and his two munchkins rushed over to his arms. They had been blessed with twins, Amrita and Shantanu.
They were laughing as Shiva took them by their little hands and they entered the newly renovated Panday Niwas.
Raavi emerged from the kitchen to embrace her little ones.
“Mumma bauth bhook lagari hai,” they chirped just recently perfecting a few sentences here and there.
Raavi ushered them in past Shiva to get them cleaned up for their late afternoon snack. She had already cooked for dinner . Dhara Bhabhi would be home in an hour and they would complete the preparations. Today was their nephew Dhruv’s fifth birthday. Dhara had conceived before they ran off but waited to tell them due to the past misfortunes that had entailed their family.
It was later that night as the kids had fallen asleep, Raavi brought up the last two slices of cake and some coffee for her and Shiva to enjoy.
“ Hey Chipakli thanks, “ he said lifting the tray from her hands.
She was quiet as she remembered the beginning of the rest of their lives. When they had met Armita Auntie and how they finally realized their true feelings for each other.
She felt his hand on her shoulder.
He hinted at the remaining piece of cake and her coffee mug.
She snapped out of her reverie.
“ Kuch huya hai kya?”
She nodded shly.
“ I am pregnant again Shiva,” she whispered.
He was delighted to hear this and started to feed the rest of the cake.
He noticed she was thinking hard about something.
“ Bol na, kya hua Raavi,” he said concerned now.
“ Isse bar bhag nahin para,” she said jokingly.
He laughed in relief.
“ What if it’s twins again? How will we manage with the store’s expansion?”
He held her hand.
“ Jaise pelhi kiya tha, isse barr bhi karlenge,” he assured her.
She jumped into his arms and he embraced her back with all his might.
He was so grateful for everything, especially the woman in his arms right now.
Six years later..
Shiva in the midst of the last several years had gone through a correspondence course and finally had his degree. Since they had even larger family now, yes they had twins again just like his wife Raavi had predicted, Radha and Sameer.
They were celebrating his graduation with a grand party tonight. Although it had been almost eight years of marriage, his wife never ceased to amaze him with everything that came their way.
He had a blast with his four children along with his niece and nephews. Krish’s wedding was going to be next month. They were going to be near the town where they met Harish Uncle and Amrita Ma, they decided to donate to the old aged home years before. Harish Uncle was waiting to join his beloved, but in the mean time he continued her legacy by helping others in need.
Raavi and Shiva were able to get some alone time again after several months.
It was like déjà vu again, as she approached with their share of the cake and coffee.
“Don’t tell me chipkali we are pregnant again!”
She laughed.
“Nahin Shiva, everytime I bring you cake doesn’t mean I am expecting. I think four kids is enough,” she declared.
He pulled her to himself.
“ How can I ever thank God enough for bringing you into my life?”
“ We used to dislike each other as kids. Now look we have four kids, two set of twins,” she replied.
“ You are so brave and beautiful,” he said with pride.
She squeezed his hand back.
“ I couldn’t have ever done it without my ek lauta pati,” she whispered.
