They have access to real-time TRP data, scene by scene, second by second. So, makers know mostly what works and what doesn't.

There are specific softwares that even give you data as heat gaze mapping on which character the eye movement of a sample size audience stopped. There's A/B testing and more.

In short, they will do what they want to the characters. No matter how much you hate it.
