Chapter 2
Dhara was headed to the courtyard to wake her brother in laws and Raavi up. As she walked by the kitchen, she noticed that Shiva was already up making coffee for himself and reading his notes “Kitna padega yeh ladka, sau se zyaada number toh nahi aayenge na” she thought.
“Raavi, Krish, Dev, time dheko aur uth jao” Dhara said in a loud voice trying to wake them up.
The three of them woke up, made their beds, and got ready to head out after a lot of debate on who should use the bathroom first.

“Bye Bhabhi, bye maa, mein nikal tha hoon” Shiva said, grabbing his bike keys and heading toward the door.
“Ae Shiva, Raavi bhi chalegi tere saath, bhool gaya kya?” Suman said as she looked at Raavi asking her to head out with Shiva. Shiva sighed and waited at the doorstep.
“Shiva ruk” Raavi said she picked up her bag and some books.“Ayy Chipkali, ek baar check toh karle ki kaunse books uthayi hai. Computer science engineering mein accounting kab se sikhane lage?” “Woh Krish ka textbook hai, Gadhedi” Shiva said as he scoffed at her. “Ab chal”
“Oh” Raavi said as she left the books down on the couch and ran outside to get on Shiva’s bike.

Raavi grabbed on to Shiva’s shoulder as they hit a speed bump. Raavi and Shiva were both flustered for a second. “Theek se bait na” Shiva said as Raavi adjusted herself on the bike "Theek se hi toh baiti hoon" she said.
“Ay Shiva, dekh na tera photo uss hoarding par hai. Vaise tu kaafi photogenic hai, koi aur accha picture de sakta tha na” Raavi said she pointed to a large hoarding on the Somnath highway that displayed the pictures of the state toppers.
Shiva shook his head, ignored her and they continued the rest of the ride to their campus in silence.

During lunch, Shiva was sitting in the canteen chatting with his friends. Ajay, another friend of Shiva came rushing to the table “Bhai, kal ke test ka results board pe chap gaya”. “Second kaun aaya?” Shiva asked.
“Rohan came second” Ajay said.
“Rohan! Party dena pageda.” Shiva said as he walked over to the table where Rohan was sitting.
“Party? mein kyun doon party? Tu first aaya na Shiva” Rohan asked.
“Arey Rohan, tujhe yeh rule maalum? Kaise maalum hoga, pehli baar second aaya hai.” Raavi said as she appeared behind Shiva.
“Kaunsa rule?” Rohan asked perplexed.
“Yahan pe, jo second aata hai, woh party deta hai. Vaise bhi, agar har bar jab Shiva first aane ki party dega toh, iske bhai ko Pandya Store bhechna padega” Raavi continued proudly as she put her hand on Shiva’s shoulder.
“Ay, chal hat” Shiva said removing Raavi’s hand off his shoulder. The cafeteria help walked over to the table where all the students were gathered, “Bhaiyya, aaj paise inse le lena” Shiva said to him while pointing toward Rohan.
“Vaise Shiva, agar main first aayi na toh main..” Raavi began to whisper in Shiva’s ear. “Woh chance toh tujhe nahi milega” Shiva said cutting her off as he walked back to his friends leaving Raavi confused.

After dinner, as Shiva and Raavi were setting up their cots for the sleeping in the courtyard, Shiva suddenly asked her, “Ay Chipkali, kya hua tha aaj bike pe?”. Raavi looked around to see if anyone heard that, she saw Dev and Krish were engrossed in a conversation and the rest of the family was in their respective rooms. “Kya.. bike.. kya bol raha hai tu?” Raavi asked innocently.
“Mere saamne yeh nautanki mat kar. Speed bump aaya, us force se bike jump hua aur tu ne mujhe pakada. Yeh sab teekh tha, par uske baad, tera breath change hua” Shiva said as Raavi was turning red.
“Iska matlab, tujhe kuch feel hua. Iss ko na infatuation bolte hai. Infatuation is only an attraction between a male and female. It is a state of being completely carried away by unreasoned passion. It is as an unappreciated and a completely unwarranted emotion” Shiva blabbered.
“Huh?” Raavi looked at him trying to piece together what Shiva said.
“Main matured hoon toh baath yahin katham karte hai. Kal test hai, jaa ke us par focus kar.” Shiva said as he tucked himself to bed.

The next day, while writing the test, Shiva heard soft sobs in the exam hall. He looked around and saw that it was Raavi crying. Their eyes met and as Raavi saw Shiva looking at her, she gave her answer sheet to the invigilator and ran out of the hall. Shiva stopped and thought for a second before continuing to write his test.
As Shiva was checking his phone while walking out of the exam hall, he got a message from Gautam saying that Raavi had already reached home.

As Shiva entered the house, he stopped by the courtyard along with Dev and Krish. He saw Gautam trying to calm a crying Raavi.
“Nahi Gaumbi, mujhse yeh nahi hoga” Raavi cried as she hugged Gautam. Dhara came running from the kitchen to console Raavi as she heard her crying. “Raavi, Kya hua?”. Raavi swiftly hugged Dhara “Dhara di, exam bahut kharab tha, mein kuch likh hi nahi paayi, mein zaroor fail ho jaaungi.”
“Koi baatnahi baccha ,ek exam hi toh hai” Dhara tried to pacify her. “Dhara Di, mein fail ho jaungi aur Maasi Maa meri shaadi kisi ladke karwayigi, mujhe yeh degree chahiye” Raavi said as she continued to cry. “Yeh last year ka syllabus bahut difficult hai Dhara Di”
Dev, Krish and Shiva were watching Raavi breakdown in front of Gaumbi and Dhara. They didn’t know how to react. In the 21 years, they have known her, they only saw her as a cheerful person spreading joy with some occasional crocodile tears. Krish nudged Shiva, “Shiva, Jaa na, teri classmate hai, console kar usse.”
“Haan Shiva, woh Maami se ladkar idhar hamare ghar mein rehne aayi hai taaki who apni padayi poori kar sake” Dev said. “Baat kar na usse.”
Shiva unwillingly went and sat next to Raavi in silence. After a while, the rest of the family walked away leaving Shiva and Raavi alone in the living room.
Raavi continued to sob and Shiva all of a sudden said “Dekh, Maami Ki Behen Ki Beti, mujhe yeh samaj mein nahi aa raha hai ki main tujhe kaise sambhaalon” “Exam mein fail hone ka dukh kaise hota hai, yeh mujhe nahi pata.” “Padai nahi kitoh, fail hi hoyenge na, usme rone ki kya baat hai.” Raavi sobbed even louder.
“Ek baar na padai kar ke exam likh na, main teri help karunga.”
Shiva continued as her sobs slowly began to subside, “Agar tab bhi fail hui toh mein Maami ki help karunga tere liye ladka doondne mein.”
Raavi wiped her tears, grabbed a tissue, and looked at Shiva with hopeful eyes.
