Chapter 3

Shiva took Raavi to a back corner in the storeroom of Pandya Store. Raavi’s eyes widened in awe as she saw how Shiva had set up his study space in the storeroom.

“Shiva, yeh sab kya hai?” Raavi asked.

“Woh ghar mein zyada jagah nahi hai na, toh main yaha aake pad letha hoon. Tu woh sab chod, aur yeh dekh.” He said showing her a chart.

“Yeh mera timetable hai. Vaise main intelligent hoon, toh agar mein ek ghante ke liye padai karun toh woh kaafi hai. Iska matlab, main agar ek ghante ke liye padtha hoon, tujhe paanch ghante ke liye padna padega. Samjhi?” He asked.

Raavi nodded meekly.

“Aur yeh mere notes hai, zindagi mein pehli baar kisi ko di hai. Pad lena aur agar koi questions hai toh pooch lena.” Shiva said as he handed her a stack of books.

Raavi took the notes from Shiva and this time she promised herself that she will put in all the efforts and write the test scheduled for the next week.

The Pandya house saw a Raavi they never saw in the past 21 years. Raavi was studying in the courtyard.

“Yeh Raavi ko kya hua? iske haath me Filmfare magazine ke alawa koi aur kitab kaisa hai?” Krish asked Dev. “Pata nahi yaar, mujhe toh dar lag raha hai.” Dev responded.

They gave confused looks to each other as Prafulla and Anita walked in to the house to greet the Pandya’s. “AAAH” Prafulla screamed.

Raavi looked up “ Maasi Maa, Anita Di aap yahan?”

“Haan Raavi, tujhe milne ka man kiya” Anita said.

Prafulla was still in shock, “Raavi, yeh logon ne kya kiya tere saath? Uss paagal scholar Shiva ka kaam hai kya yeh? Tu dance practice ke waqt, padh rahi hai?”

“Woh Maasi, iss semester mujhe padai pe focus kar na hai. Mujhe decent marks aayenge toh mujhe graduation ke baad koi toh job milega.” Raavi said.

“Naukri? Aur shaadi ka kya?” Prafulla whined.

“Maasi, uss topic pe- “ Raavi was about to say something but Shiva chimed in. “Ayy Maami, pehli baar teri iss fool, oh sorry, phool jaise bachi kuch sensible baat kar rahi hai. Mat rokiye usse.”

Prafulla did not have the energy to debate with Shiva. She let the topic go and went inside to meet Dhara and Suman.

Raavi gave a soft smile to Shiva and he nodded.

Raavi had never studied they way she the past six days. She woke up at 4 am before Shiva did, and studied in the kitchen, She was the last one to go to bed at night as well. She studied while doing her chores. She had her notes with her while eating, helping Dhara in the kitchen and while watching TV.

As she studied in the day, she noted all her doubts and questions she wanted to ask Shiva. Each night after dinner, Shiva and her went to his study space in the store. She took all her doubts to Shiva and he surprisingly helped her out and answered her questions patiently.

Raavi now sat in the first row during class and even went to the library after class.

Raavi’s friends Kajal and Sudeesh were concerned about her as she no longer hung out with them. Kajal walked up to Shiva after classas she could not get hold of Raavi, “Shiva, Raavi theekh toh hai na?” she asked.

“Kyun usse kya hua?” Shiva replied.

“Nahi woh, Raavi kuch dino se dikh nahi rahi. Aur usne kaha ki woh tumhare ghar shift hui hai kuch dino ke liye” Kajal followed up.

“Haan, theekh hai woh, bas padai ka stress hai shayad” Shiva said as he packed his backpack and headed out of the class. He was concerned for a second as he was unable to digest the fact that the Raavi he knew for 21 years would give up on her social life to study for a test.

On the day of the exam, Raavi asked Dhara and Suman to wake up early as she wanted to perform a pooja prior to her exam. The entire family was woken up and was asked to come to the mandir area in the house.

Raavi joined her hands, closed her eyes, and began to pray aloud.

“Hey Bhagwan, aaj ke exam mein aise hi questions dena jo maine pada hai. Aur jo maine nahi pada hai woh optional mein de do.”

“Oh Chipkali, yeh sab kya laga rakha hai? Bhagwan ko toh baksh de” Shiva said.

“Shiva please, aaj tu mujhe apne taano se baksh de. Pehli baar padai kar ke, bina chits bana ke exam likhne jaa rai hoon, yeh mere liye bahot important din hai” Raavi replied.

“Kya? Tu cheating karti thi?” Shiva asked confused.

“Haan sab teri tarah nahi hote” Krish said. “Tu bhi?” Shiva asked Krish and he looked around to see Dev, Gaumbi and Dhara Bhabhi also nod.

“woh sab chod, jaldi bike nikal, aaj hum late nahi ho sakte” Raavi said.

Dev, Krish and the rest of the family wished Raavi good luck as Dhara fed her some yogurt and sugar.

“Thank you Dhara Di” Raavi said, and she headed over to Suman to take her blessings.

“All the Bhest, beta” Suman said.

For the first time Raavi felt confident in an exam hall. She looked at the question paper and smiled.

She continued to write her answers in full speed. She wrote so much that she was the only personin the hall asking for an additional answer sheet every ten minutes.

“Sir, additional sheet” Raavi asked the invigilator.

Shiva, amidst writing his exam looked at her, their eyes met for a second and Raavi raised her eyebrows at him.

Shiva shook his head and went back to writing his exam.

After the exam ended, Shiva walked up to Raavi and asked "Kaisa tha exam?" "Accha tha Shiva, pass toh hojaungi! Thank you!" She said smiling at him.

A couple of days later, Shiva and Raavi were hanging out with their mutual friends in the garden on campus.

Ajay, came rushing to Shiva “Bhai, parso ke test ka results board pe chap gaya”. “Second kaun aaya?” Shiva asked. “Tu” Ajay said faltly.

Shiva spat out the coffee he was drinking.

“Congrats Raavi, tu hi hai jo iss Shiva se 1st rank cheen sakti hai.” Ajay said shaking Raavi’s hand.

“Thank you! Thank you so much” Raavi said to Ajay. Everyone began gathering around Raavi and began congratulating her.

Shiva scoffed and began to walk away as he heard a voice. “Ay Shiva, Party dena padega.” Rohan said as he came from behind them. “Party? main kyun doon party” Shiva asked irritated.

“Arrey, tune hi bola na, ki jo bhi second aata hai, woh party deta hai. Rule hai na” Rohan continued. “Vaise, congratulations Raavi” Rohan said hugging her while Shiva glared at them and walked away after handing some cash to Ajay.

Shiva was fuming in anger as he was driving back with Raavi on the bike. Raavi didn’t want to deal with his anger now and she decided to keep quiet during the ride back.

Shiva entered the house in anger and Raavi followed “Tu pagal hai Raavi, Usse hug kyun kiya? Ek thappad maarna tha uss Rohan ko” Shiva said as he threw his backpack on the couch.

“Mama ne tujhe humare yahan choda na, aur tu aise? Agar kuch hua toh, Gaumbi lenge kya zimmedaari?” Shiva continued to rant in anger.

Dhara came running into the living area, “Shiva! Kyun chilla raha hai? Raavi maine suna k itu first aayi hai”

Raavi nodded in glee but Shiva spoke again “main kuch aur baat kar raha hoon Bhabhi aur aap rank ki baat kar rahe ho. Haan aayi yeh first. Kya badi baat hai? Padai ki toh kisiko bhi aa sakti hai first rank.”

Suman heard the commotion and came to the living room as well “Kya? Raavi beta tu first aayi hai?”

Raavi nodded again and was about to say something but Shiva spoke again “Haan kaunsi badi baat hai, maine issi padaya aur aayi yeh first. Aur vaise bhi, maine exam theek se nahi likha taaki isse confidence aaye”

“Kya bakwaas hai? Pura class theek se nahi likha?” Krish asked Shiva.

“Par Maa yeh Raavi na uss ladke ke-” Shiva continued ignoring Krish’s comment.

“Shiva, yeh paani piyo” Raavi said offering him her bottle. “Vaise itna irritate kyunho raha hai, Rohan ki vajah se, ya mere top karne ki vajah se?”

Krish giggled looking at Suman and Dhara who were trying to suppress their smiles. Raavi and Krish ran up to the terrace while Suman and Dhara headed to the kitchen leaving Shiva alone.

Shiva was unable to sleep that night, he kept tossing and turning in his bed. He turned around and is eyes stopped at Raavi. She was sleeping in bliss. He slowly got up and walked to her cot. He noticed a strand of hair on her face and his hands reached out to tuck that behind her ear. As his fingers made contact with her face, Raavi opened her eyes scaring Shiva.

He swiftly placed his hand on her mouth to stop her from screaming and waking everyone up. She tried to push away and bit his hand. “Aaaah Maami ki behen ki Beti, Kaathi hai” he winced in pain trying not to scream. “Shh Shh, shaant hoja, haath hata raha hoon, chillana math.” He said as she calmed down.

“Ay Shiva,kya kar raha hai tu, mere bistar ke paas?” Raavi asked. Shiva looked around tosee if anyone heard that, he was glad as he saw Dev and Krish still sleeping. “Kya.. bistar.. kya bol rahi hai tu?” Shiva asked innocently.

“Mere saamne yeh nautanki mat kar. Tu kya karne aaya tha?” Raavi asked as Shiva wa sturning red.

“Iska matlab, tujhe kuch feel hua. Iss ko na infatuation bolte hai. Infatuation is only an attraction between a male and female. It is a state of being completely carried away by unreasoned passion. It is as an unappreciated and a completely unwarranted emotion” Raavi blabbered.

“Huh?” Shiva looked at her perplexed.

“Main matured hoon toh baath yahin katham karte hai. Aagle hafte ek aur test hai, jaake us par focus kar.” Raavi said as she tucked herself to bed.
