Apni saari khushiyan tere naam kiya,

Suman watched her eldest son sitting before her and watching her disappointedly. His face was filled with minute lines of irritation and he was shaking his head in exasperation. Suman felt her heart sink.
"Maa tu bhi na! Tujhe kyun aisa lagta hai haan?" Gautam said. "Teri is soch se tang aa gaya hoon main. Dhara ne kya kuch nahin kiya hai is ghar ke liye! Mere liye! Tere liye! Aur fir bhi tujhe lagta hai ki main ghalat hoon jo maine use pehle sambhala? Maa mere peeche saari foj thi jo tujhe sambhal leti par Dhara ko chot lag gayi thi isliye main us tak pehle pahunchna chahta tha. Woh ladki tere liye apne aap ki safety ko tak nahin dekhti aur tu hai ki mere us ko pehle sambhalne par mujhse ye sab pooch rahi hai! Aur kya ye teri ghalti nahin hai maa? Usne to tujhe kaha bhi kinwoh andar le jayegi tujhe par tune inkaar kiya! Aise beech aangan mein construction ke waqt koi baithta hai bhala? Nahin! Lekin tujhe kaun samjhayega? Maa tera mujhe kuch samajh nahin aata! Aur fir bolti hai main Dhara ka side leta hoon!" Gautam was very calm but hints of exasperation was lacing his words. Suman watched him with a sarcastic smile as she nodded her head but the pain and hurt in her eyes remained invisible to Gautam, who was still reminiscing about the accident and Dhara's wound afterwards.
Jo tu dagmagaya,
main daudi aur tujhko sambhala,
Mera laadla tu,
har baar tujhko bachaya,
Tu jo gir gaya,
to aansu tere maine mitaya,
Godi mein leke tujhe dharas dilaya,
Ek pal bhi tujhko maine na sataya,
Meri nigahen, tujhpar tiki,
Tujhe ek pal bhi chode na reh saki...
Mera laadla tu...
"Waah beta... Aaj tu itna bada ho gaya ki mere badhte haathon ko nazar andaaz karke aage badh gaya? Gautam... Mere baqi bacche Dhara ne mere saath milkar paale hain. Par tu? Tujhe maine akela badha kiya hai. Woh mere laadlon ki yashoda hai. Par tu mera beta hai. Tujhse umeedon ki bhauchaad lagadi shayad. Maaf kar dena mujhe beta. Aaindah nahin hoga. Main hi pagal hoon jo tujhse in sab ki umeeden lag baithi." Suman whispered hurtfully but with a strange smile. Her eyes were filled with tears. Gautam sighed. He didn't understand how to tell her. He loved his mother but today he really felt Dhara needed him more because the rest of his brothers were there for his mother. In his conclusions, his normally calm heart couldn't see his mother's frustrations.
"Maa woh meri patni hai. Kya mera uski taraf badhna aur uski chot par yun pareshaan hona ghalat hai? Kya ek patni ke liye apni concern dikhana ghalat hai? Nahin na? Ek waqt ata hai jab baccha badha ho jata hai aur use apni patni ke baare mein sochna padhta hai. Uska bhi mujhpar haq hai Maa!" Gautam explained. In his eyes, his mother was behaving like a typical mother where she became insecure just because her son moved to help his wife out first. He felt that she needed to be the centre of his attention always. Which he felt was not possible as Dhara deserved all the love in this world, for her dedication towards his home and family. Her wounds had shook him terribly. Even though they were minor, he still felt they were huge ones.
Gautam shook his head and went out of the room leaving Suman to ponder upon her broken heart and today's incident that seemed to rattle her to the core.
•••••
Suman was still awake and pondering upon today's incident. Disappointment was crowding her senses. She looked around and saw Gautam everywhere. She still remembered the day he was born. He was such a tiny baby, with a full crown of hair. She had fallen in love with him instantly. He had held her little finger in his hand and when she tried to pull it, he had pouted and then cried loudly shaking her to the core. Darshan hd laughed at her alarmed face but she had swayed as much as she could while sitting and tried to shush her baby with sweet nothings.
Meri aankhon ka taara banke tu aaya,
Maine jag choda bas tere liye,
Apni har aasha ko tujhse joda,
Meri umr bhi de di tere liye...
Tu khushiyan ban kar mere ghar utra,
Tere aankhon ki khushi hai dunya mere liye...
Mera laadla tu...
She remembered the first time she fed him. He didn't know how to suckle. She had to guide him but he was frustrated and hungry. He cried. She was tearful at his tears as she tried again and again. Finally he learned and she could breathe in relief. When finally he had a full stomach and had fallen asleep in her arms, she smiled at him fondly and bent down to kiss his forehead. She had admired him and promised she would never let him be unhappy.
He grew up a happy child. Alone and the centre of his parents world. But he was not a spoilt child. He was the pride of his parents. Always eager to learn. She remembered his first steps. He had faltered and toppled over. His fearful eyes had watched her in horror and before he could reach the ground, she had placed her lap in the spot so he wouldn't be hurt. He had cried. Due to shock. But when he saw her holding him with a soft smile, he had chuckled tearfully and hugged her tightly with his little arms, then placed an open mouthed, wet kiss on her cheek. She had laughed at his little love.
Suman chuckled as she wiped her tears. Her Gaumbi had always been a very loving and a grateful child. He had a heart of gold.
She remembered the first time he had talked properly. She had been surprised and then delighted as she clapped and requested that he speak once more. He had smiled at her enthusiasm showing his front teeth and then proceeded to speak again. She had clapped in happiness.
She remembered the first time he rode the bicycle. He had fallen down. His father had wanted him to get up on his own. But Suman had rushed forward and picked him off the ground and dusted him as she checked him for injuries and then hugged him to herself. He had smiled. He had told her he was fine and she should never worry for him again.
She remembered his first day at school and the way she had been anxious. Darshan had laughed at her but she had been sitting on pins and needles. She remembered each time, each second she had spent with her son. She remembered how she had given birth to her other sons and how her son had helped her with all of them afterwards. He was her peace. He had never let her down. When she was paralysed after Darshan's death, it was he who had taken care of everything. He was the pillar on whose strength her house and world stood strong and yet... Here he was...
Suman gradually remembered how Gautam moved away from her to this extent. Dhara...
The name brought a gentle but painful smile on her face. Dhara was a much needed shade in her world full of burning sun. She came to them when they were breaking apart and like a glue she had joined them all back and taken care of them all. She brought up Suman's three children like her own sons. She took care of Gaumbi. In all these years, Dhara proved time and time again that she was a good daughter in law. She always respected Suman and never did a thing without her permission. Suman's fear of losing her sons was gradually put to rest. Dhara was here, not to snatch away her family, but to keep her family together.
But then she remembered how Gautam started supporting Dhara... It hd been gradual. And she had let it be but slowly Dhara began to hide stuff from her and Gautam supported her in these decisions. She started feeling like an alien in her own house and her sons' life. Dhara began to take decisions without even informing her. And Gautam supported her even in those decisions. After the partition between family in the haveli, Suman had forgiven her even though she didn't agree to Dhara's thought process, because her children loved their bhabhimaa and she herself loved the girl. She didn't want Dhara to be away from Gaumbi because Gautam loved Dhara madly.
But today... when Gautam had ignored her hand and rushed past her towards Dhara, she had realised that her son, her pride, her peace... was no more hers. She didn't say he shouldn't support Dhara but she wished he could have seen her too along with Dhara. He had been so lost in Dhara that he had forgotten even his paralysed and helpless mother. Her heart was shattering apart.
Tears were freely flowing down her cheeks and she was chuckling as she sobbed.
"Betiyan nahin bete parayr hote hain. Shaadi ke baad Maa baap ko to bhool hi jate hain." She sighed.
"Maa?" She heard a voice and looked up to see her third son standing at her door. He saw her crying and anxiously rushed towards her. "Maa?" He whispered painfully. He had never been able to bear tears in Suman's eyes or injustice to his mother. For her sake, he had burned in the fire of hatred towards his maami who had stolen her right from her. For her sake, he had nearly destroyed his married life and nearly lost his life. For her sake he had always been strong and shielded his family from everything. Her Shiva was always by her side. He was her confidence.
He held her hands in his own and kissed them reverently. She sobbed as she smiled and cupped his cheeks and kissed his forehead and then eyes.
"Shiva..." Suman called out brokenly. "Maa ki kya auqaat hainyeri zindagi mein beta?" She enquired softly. Shiva sucked in a breath.
"Ye tu kya keh rahi hai Maa? Tu janti hai na mere liye, hum sab ke liye to kya hai?" Shiva whispered brokenly. He was witnessing a different side of Suman today. A broken side. One that was shattering before his very eyes.
"Tu mera beta hai ya Dhara ka?" She enquired swiftly. Today she badly wanted someone to listen to her without any partiality or devotion to anyone else other than her. She wanted her son, not Dhara's krishna, but her Shiva.
"Aapka beta hoon. Bhabhi ke liye jaan haazir hai. Kuch bhi kar sakta hoon unke liye. Par aap meri jaan hai Maa! Kya hua hai aapko?" Shiva held her hands and rubbed them between his. Suman sobbed again.
"Tujhe yaad hai Shiva? Bachpan mein main jab Dhara se nainsaafi kar jaati thi tab tu mujhe kaise poochta tha ki maine aisa kyun kiya? Tu hamesha ghalat ke khilaf rehne ko utsukt rehta tha." Suman reminded him fondly as she watched her son's worried face.
"Haan Maa. Aapne hi to sikhaya hai. Ghalat ghalat hota hai. Chaahe jo bhi kare!" Shiva proclaimed. Suman smiled.
"Chahe woh Gaumbi ya Dhara hi kyun na ho?" She asked.
"Maa? Gaumbi aur Bhabhi se kuch ghalti hui hai kya?" Shiva asked tensely. If it was anyone else, he would have erupted by now. But this was his mother and he knew her well enough to know that she wouldn't react this way without a reason. His mother was very wise.
"Ek mard ka sabse mushkil kaam hota hai apni Maa aur patni ke beech santulam rakhna." Suman told him. "Maa se aadar se pesh aana aur patni ke bhi samman ko thez na pahunchne dena. Jab beta bas Maa ka hokar rehta hai to biwi ke saath anyaay karta hai. Aur jab biwi ka hokar rehta hai to Maa ka dil todta hai. Use beech mein khada ho kar sahi aur ghalat ka farq pehchan kar dono ko sambhalna padta hai. Kabhi kabhi Maa ke liye biwi ka dil tod deta hai aur kabhi kabhi biwi ke liye Maa ka. Magar ye sahi rasta nahin hai. Sahi ye hai ki sach ke saath khada rahe. Sahi ye hai ki ek ke liye doosre ko kabhi na dhutkare ya nazarandaaz kare." Suman sighed. Shiva watched her defeated face and felt his heart break. What had happened today? He had missed something.
"Kya hua hai Maa? Gaumbi ne kuch kiya hai kya?" Shiva asked gently as he placed his hand over Suman's cheek and wiped her tears.
"Aaj..." Suman told him everything that happened. "Main waha lachaar padi thi. Dar laga tha mujhe bhi. Haath aage badhaya maine jab Gautam mere paas pahuncha. Mujhe laga mere beta mujhe uthayega. Sambhal lega mujhe. Par mere badhe haath ko nazar andaaz karke, woh nere paas se guzra aur aage badh gaya. Maano meri chinta hi na ho. Us waqt woh sirf ek pati tha! Dhara ka Gaumbi tha. Mera nahin. Uski nazar sirf Dhara par thi, maano jaise main maaine hi nahin rakhti uske liye. Shiva mujhe bahut thez pahunchi hai aaj. Laga jaise mera koi astitva hi nahin. Aaj pehli baar saalon baad maine ye toot kar mehsoos kiya ki main ek apahij hoon. Kaash mere pairon mein jaan hoti. Apne bete ka mun to na takna padta madad ke liye." Suman cried. "Khushi hoti hai ki mera beta apni biwi se pyaar karta hai aur uske liye datt kar mushkil ka saamna kar sakta hai, par dard bhi hota hai ki, mere bete ne aaj mujhe is kaabil hi na samjha ki woh mujhe ek nazar dekh hi leta. Main aaj haar gayi hoon." Suman cried.
"Tu kabhi nahin haar sakti Maa." Shiva whispered to her gently and kissed her forehead. "Main waada karta hoon ki tujhe aisa kabhi mehsoos nahin hone dunga aaj ke baad." Shiva promised fiercely. He didn't want his mother to cry ever again. He loved his brother and bhabhi but he loved his mother more. For her, he could do anything. Gautam loved Dhara and Shiva idolised both of them. But Shiva also knew that Gautam did something today that had pushed storm in all their lives. His mother was feeling insecure and replaced. She was always balanced but today she was feeling lonely because she felt her children had grown up and moved on leaving her behind. Shiva wanted Suman to realise that their world revolved around her. And that fact would never change. Shiva knew Gautam just fid this because of his extreme love for Bhabhi but in the process he had wrongfully broken his mother's heart. If it was for something right that his brother had done this then Shiva would have let it go, but this wasn't the right thing to do and Shiva needed Gautam to understand that. Balance between the women of his life was important for Gaumbi and Shiva wanted Gautam to see that. "Main aapse waada karta hoon ki Gaumbi ko realise karwaunga ki jab koi beta aisa karta hai to kaise lagta hai. Waada karta hoon ki woh fir se santulan banana seekh jaayenge. Waada karta hoon ki Dhara bhabhi ke liye aapka ya aapke Dhara bhabhi ka dil kabhi nahin todeenge Gaumbi. Waada karta hoon ki jab aap sahi hongi to koyi bhi aapko ghalat nahin maamega aaj se." Shiva breathed to her softly, giving her wounded heart the balm to heal it. She closed her eyes in peace. She knew that when Shiva promised something, he fulfilled it. She then opened her eyes to look at him.
"Aur jo tu aur Dev karte hain kya woh sahi hai beta?" She enquired. Shiva was puzzled as he watched her.
"Dhara ke liye Raavi aur Rishita ko chup karana. Dhara ke har ek faisle ko sahi kehna, bhala hi woh ghalat hi kyun na ho. Dhara ki pooja karna. Dhara ke liye Raavi aur Rishita ko unke haq se door karna. Kya yeh sahi hai?" She asked Shiva who was dumbfounded.
"Maa..." He whispered.
"Kya kabhi Gaumbi ne Dhara ko mere liye chup karwaya hai? Kya kabhi Gaumbi ko Dhara haq se door karte dekha hai use? Tu kahega ki Raavi Rishita aur Dhara ke beech koi tulna hi nahin. Par Dhara ke liye aaj dus saal baad nahin, barson pehle hi Gaumbi mere saamne khada hua tha. Usne Dhara ke saath kabhi na insaafi nahin ki. Mere saath bhi nahin kiya tha kuch mahinon pehle tak. Par woh Dhara ke liye apni Maa se lad sakta hai. Kya woh mujhse pyaar ya mera sammaan nahin karta? Ya main Gautam ke liye kam hoon aur Dhara tum bhaiyon ke liye zyada? Nahin na?" She asked. Shiva shook his head. "Isliye Gautam ne ye kiya kyunki woh kuch waqt pehle tak Maa aur Biwi dono ki jaghon ko samajhta tha. Shiva... Jab mard ka jhukaav ek taraf hadh se zyada ho jaye na? To ghar ka sukoon tabah ho jata hai. Tera jhukaav Dhara aur meri taraf zyada hai. Raavi ke saath tu bahut nainsaafi kar raha hai. Use uska haq dena seekh. Bhabhi bhakti mein ya Maa bhakti mein apni zindagi tabah mat kar. Santulan rakhna seekh. Gaumbi ko santulan seekhane se pehle. Tu khud seekh jana. Main te nahin kehti ki tu mera aur Dhara ka sammaan na kar ya humen nazar andaaz kar. Main yeh bhi nahin kehti ki Raavi ki har ghalti seh ja. Main yeh kehti hoon ki sahi rasta pakad. Santulan ka rasta." Suman told him gently.
"Woh mere saath khush nahin hai Maa. Woh kabhi mujhe apna nahin paayegi. Use jaise insaan chahiye woh main nahin. Woh Dev jaise insaan ke sapne dekhti hai. Mere jaisa nahin." Shiva finally told Suman and revealed his heartbreak to her. The pain in his voice shattered Suman's heart once more. The world would never know how loving her son is. He bore all the pain and gave back only care. Even in his anger and hurt, he was thinking about her 'apparent' wants. But Suman hadn't whitened her hair in the sun. She could read eyes and Raavi's eyes spoke of her new dreams. It was time to explain it to her 'naive in these matters' son.
"Uske sapne aur uske saare ye jo chashme hai na jin se woh dunya dekhti thi, uski Dev jaise ladkon ke liye jo sapne the na? Woh usi din usne aag mein jhok diya, jis din usne Dev ko use mandap pe chodte dekha. Woh to usi fin tere sindoor mein rang gayi thi. Lekin woh thodi chanchal hai. Samajhna ya samjhana nahin aata use. Woh masoom hai. Dil saaf hai uska. Isliye use samajh nahin aa raha teri aankhen padhna. Tere jaise woh gehrai nahin hai uski soch mein. Woh bas har pal mein jeena janti haindil khol ke. Sochna ya fir aage ki tension lena, ye sab woh nahin kar sakti. Shayad isi liye woh ladki tujhe sonp di gayi hai. Taaki tu use sambhal sake aur woh tujhe jeena sikha sake. Shiva... Uski aankhon mein maine tere saath wale sapne sekhe hain. Woh ladki aise logon mein nahin jo pichli baaton par kadwahat leke baith jaye. Woh un logon mein se hai jo muskura kar maaf karke aage badh jaye. Dev ko bhi maaf kar diya. Teri taraf se use dharas milegi to woh saari dunya se zyada tujhe chahegi."
"Par Maa main kabhi uski pasand to nahin ban paaunga na? Ek zabardasti aur anchaha rishta hi reh paaunga."
"Woh bhi to anchaahi aur na pasand biwi thi na? Tune Dhara ke kehne par ki thi Shaadi! To kya tu ab bhi anchaha manta hai use? Kya woh zabardasti ka bojh hai? Nahin na? Tu aage badh kar use apna chuka hai to kya uske liye ye mumkin nahin? Kya woh aage nahin badhi ab tak?"
"Meri zindagi mein koi aur to nahin tha na maa? Uski zindagi mein Dev ka chitra hai."
"Dev ka chitra tha. Dev ne khud mita diya. Bachi hui jo bhi uski khush fehmiyan thi woh uski mandap ki aag kha gayi. Shiva... Dev uska bachpana tha. Tu uska sach hai. Maine usko tere liye intezaar karte aur khush hote dekha hai. Teri fikr karte dekha hai. Main yeh nahin kehti pyaar karti hai tujhse. Par beta... aage chal kar ho jayega pyaar bhi. Use pyaar karne ki wajah de de. Jitna tu humse pyaar karta hai usse zyaada karke dikha de usko pyaar. Woh tujhe dunya se upar rakhegi. Fir tu uski pasand bhi hoga aur zaroorat bhi. Shiva... tu kab se apni qismat ka rona rone laga? Tu to un logon mein se hai jo bas kar guzarte hain. To ye pyaar bhi kar guzar taaki woh dunya se nazren milakar keh sake ki woh us Shiva Pandya ki biwi hai jo use itna chahta hai jitna koi kisi ko pyaar nahin kar sakta. Is zabardasti ki shaadi mein pyaar lana tera kaam hai. Woh dobi hai. Jab tak tu na samjhaye dheere se, tab tak woh nahin samjhegi." Suman told him. He sighed feeling lighter after ages. His mother's words had travelled through his ears and had housed themselves in his heart. Yes... He would love her to such an extent that she would realise that he could love and be loved despite the smells that surrounded him. He would show her that he was much better than all the prince charming nonsense she had dreamt of. He would make her see Shiva Pandya, the man who could go to the level of madness for his loved ones. "Woh ab puranii wali Raavi nahin hai. Woh teri Raavi hai. Use ehsaas nahin hua. To tu dila de ehsaas." Suman told him. He nodded. "Bas yaad rakhna. Santulan hona chahiye. Usse deewangi aur junoon wali muhabbat kar par ghalat aur sahi ka farq mat bhoolna kabhi."
"Jee Maa." Shiva had agreed. His heart was filled with a renewed hope. He had to speak with Raavi and clear everything first.
"Ab ja. Woh raah tak rahi hogi tera." Suman said with a smile. Shiva smiled back and wiped her eyes again before kissing her forehead.
"Aainda apne aap ko apahij mat kehna. Main zinda hoon abhi." Shiva warned her gently. She smiled at him proudly. He was her confidence and he was also her peace now... She wished that he learned to steer his life. He wished her a good night and walked out of her room.
•••••
Raavi was waiting in the room and watching the door for his arrival. She was so habituated to his presence in their room during the night that she couldn't sleep without him being beside her. His presence was safety and heat. His very breaths spelled out her protection. And she didn't realize when he had become her peace that every time he stayed away she became restless. She waited for him. She hoped for his safety. She wished he fought with her and let her do all his work. And yet she couldn't seem to realise what he had actually become for her.
She sat straighter and watched him attentively when he finally came back. He closed the door softly and looked at her hopeful face before he blinked slowly and then walked towards the cupboard and took out his night clothes. She still seemed to be watching him. Right before her eyes, he removed his shirt and vest and wore his night vest. She was shocked as she watched him change so normally infront of her. It felt intimate to her and he had avoided doing this before, in front of her.
"Mud... Mujhe meri pant bhi change karni hai. Woh bhi aise hi kar doon?" He asked her straightforwardly and she was taken aback as she turned away hastily. He changed and put his clothes in the laundry basket that she had placed in the corner of their room. He had avoided putting his clothes there before, purposefully keeping it in Dhara's laundry basket. Raavi felt tearful at this change.
"Shiva... Mujhe kuch kehna hai tujhse." She pleaded. Shiva sighed and came and sat before her peacefully and signed for her to continue. Raavi was dumbfounded. "Woh..." She stuttered as he readily kept silent. "Woh... Maine Sneha se saare contacts mita diye hain. Uska number delete kar diya hai. Aur... Aur woh diary bhi jala diya hai." Raavi told him innocently. "Main Dev se pyaar nahin karti. Aage badh gayi hoon. Tere saath. Mujhe woh diary pehle hi jala dena chahiye tha. Aisa kuch hota hi nahin. Par woh mere liye maaine hi nahin rakhti thi, to main bhi is baare mein bhool hi gayi." She told him softly, tearfully. He watched her patiently.
"Mujhe in sab se koi farq nahin padta Raavi." He told her. Her heart sank. Was he not going to give them a chance? Had he made his mind up? "Main bas ek sawaal poochna chahta hoon. Jawaab de paayegi?" She nodded hesitantly. "Tu khush hai?" He enquired gently. She watched him confused. "Mere saath?"
"Haan. Main khush hoon." She told him with the same confusion.
"Raavi teri diary padhi hai maine. Tujhe ek gentlemanly ladka chahiye tha aur woh main nahin hoon. Na kabhi banna chahta hoon. Tere liye main khud ko is hadh tak nahin badal sakta. Main jaisa hoon waisa hi rahunga. Aur na main tujhe badalna chahunga. Is liye tujhse pooch raha hoon. Kya tu khush hai? Us insan ke saath jo anpad jaahil gawar ho? Jisse masale ki badboo aye! Jo junglee ho?" He asked her without beating around the bush. She inhaled. Her heart was paining. This is what he thought she wanted even now? This is what he thought she thought about him? Was that why he was distancing himself? But had she given him a reason not to?
"Main bahut khush hoon. Pyaar nahin karti tujhse par aage badhna chahti hoon. Aur shayad aage hum khush reh paayen?" Raavi answered him with a hopeful question. Her innocent eyes were softening him.
"Dekh Raavi. Main ye bas ek baar kahunga tujhse. Mujhe tu pasand hai. Teri har ek acchai aur burayi ke saath. Main apne aapko tere saath ye rishta nibhate hue dekh sakta hoon. Par kya tu dekh sakti hai khud ko mere saath?"
"Main nahin dekh sakti to kya yahan hoti?"
"Mere sawaalon ka jawaab tere sawaal nahin hain Raavi. Baat karni hai to theek se kar. Jawaab de sawaal mat kar."
"Mere ateet ke panne mera bachpana thi Shiva. Shaadi ke baad tujhe maine alag nazariye se dekha. Tujhe samjha. Tu mujhe pasand hai jab tu mujhse gusse mein jang nahin lad raha hota tab. Main ladayi aur nok jhok seh sakti hoon par gussa aur nafrat nahin. Tu mujhe aage badhne ki wajah to de!"
"Soch le Raavi. Aage ja kar tu pachtayegi to nahin? Kyunki iske baad main tujhse kuch nahin poochunga. Ye aakhri baar hum is baare mein baat kar rahe hain. Agar tujhe gentlemanly educated ladka chahiye to tu abhi chod kar ja sakti hai is rishte ko aur koi kuch nahin kahega." He told her firmly. She shook her head at the uneasiness and the slight ache that surrounded her at his words.
"Main is rishte ko nahin todna chahti." She told him without any hesitation.
"Main adhoore kaam nahin karta Raavi. Jo karta hoon shiddat se aur imaandaari se karta hoon. Shaadi aur pyaar dono bhi shiddat se hi nibhaunga. Meri shiddat shayad tu bardaash na kar paye." Shiva told her. She watched him wide eyed. "Aaj ke baad tera haq, teri har jagah tujhe diya. Maa aur Dhara bhabhi se upar kuch nahin tha mere liye. Aaj tujhe main unhi ke barabar wali jagah deta hoon." He declared. Raavi felt her heart tremble at the intensity of his promise. Her eyes became tearful and her throat constricted with emotions as he watched her with the same devotion she had seen him show his family. She sobbed in happiness and relief. Finally... This is what she had wanted. Not a gentlemanly educated person but someone who loved her with his whole heart. She had seen the men in this family devote themselves crazily to the women of this family and fallen in love with the idea of that devotion. Today he was declaring the same devotion to her.
“Shiva...” Raavi whispered. He stopped her with a raised finger, but gentle eyes. She stopped.
“Baat abhi tak khatam nahin hui hai Raavi.” He told her softly. “Maine tujhe apne zindagi mein wo maqaam diya hai jiski tu haqdaar hai aur jiske aage mere liye koi nahin hoga. Maine kaha na main pyaar aur shaadi poori shiddat se nibhaunga. Lekin kya tu usi shiddat se nibha paayegi ye rishta?” He asked her. “Shaadi sirf ajnabeeyon ki tarah rehne ka naam nahin hai Raavi. Shaadi ek bahut badi aur pyaari zimmedaari hai. Is mein ajnabeeyon ka koi kaam nahin hota. Is mein rehne ke liye ek junoon chahiye hota hai. Woh junoon jo tujhe bas aage chalte rehne par bebas kr de. Woh junoon jis mein tujhe khud se zyada uski fikr ho. Woh junoon jis mein tu sab se zyada uski khushi aur uski hanse maange. Is mein poore dil o jaan se ek dusre ko sweekarna padta hai. Kya tu de paayegi mujhe apna dil?” He asked her. There was fire in his eyes. His voice was low and enchanting to her ears. She felt like she was being pulled towards him and sinking in his eyes. The intensity that had them surrounded was something she hadn’t felt for someone else before. “Main jab kuch karne par aaun to kar guzarta hoon. Aage kya ho uska main nahin sochta. Maine faisla kiya hai ki tujhse ye shaadi nibhaunga to peeche nahin hatunga. Kya tu datt paayegi mere saath? Ab nahin to aage chal kar tann se bhi sweekarna padega. Yunhi nahin kategi zindagi. Sab soch le. Main ye sab tujhse khul kar baat kar raha hoon taaki tu jaan sake ki tu kis cheez ke liye haami bhar rahi hai.” She felt nervous at his intensity. He had always been intense before but not in such a way. It was always his hatred she had witnessed. Today there was a different madness in his eyes. She was scared but also very excited. “Shiddat se kisi cheez ka karna bahut mazedaar hota hai. Aur mujhe har cheez apne poore junoon ke saath karne ki aadat hai. Par Shaadi do logon se chalti hai. Meri shiddat ke aage kahin tu pheeki na pad jaye. Saamne wala takkar ka na ho to maza nahin aata. To abhi faisla le le. Tujhe waqt deta hoon.”
“Tujhe kaise pata pyaar ho jayega?”
“Main kisi aur cheez par maanunga hi nahin. Mere rang mein tujhe rang kar hi chodunga. Tu apni fikr kar. Rang payegi apne rang mein mujhe?” She watched him. Didn’t she always want this? This madness? This devotion? Her fate had given her that. Her happiness was at the door. Then why should she think?
“Haan.” She told him firmly. A fire was lit in her eyes too. He liked it. He smirked at her. Holding her hand, he pulled her on his lap. She was shocked beyond belief and watched his eyes.
“Ab jab tune maan liya hai mujhe apna pati. To main apna har haq istemaal karunga jab main chahun. Tu bhi kar sakti hai.” He told her mischievously but then grew serious. “Ye koi choti baat nahin hai mere liye. Main Maa aur Bhabhi ki bahut zyada izzat karta hoon. Tu janti hai. Isliye tujhse keh raha hoon ki tujhe bhi karni padegi. Unke saath koi beizzati nahin bardaash kar sakta main. Par usse zyada tujhe kuch karne ki zaroorat nahin hai. Apna kaam kar aur khush reh. Baaqi ki chinta tu mujhpar chod de. Tujhe kuch bhi ghalat sehne ki zaroorat nahin kisi se bhi. Main hoon tere saath khada. Tere peeche main chattan ki tarah rahunga hamesha.” Shiva told her and her heart felt oddly light and luminous. He was giving her, her desires. She had wished for someone to love her to this extent. “Mazaak karne mein aur udane mein jo farq hai tujhe samajhna hoga. Teri har ladayi aur nok jhok seh sakta hoon main par tu mera kabhi mazaak nahin banayegi dusron ke saamne. Mujhe neecha kabhi nahin dikhayegi jaise main tujhe nahin dikhaunga.” He told her as he lightly placed his thumb on her cheek and stroke it. She closed her eyes feeling the intimacy of a man and his words for the first time in her life. He was speaking to her assertively like he owned every right pertaining to her and she was helpless as her heart had already accepted him as hers. She was not in love but she could very well see herself in it in the future. If he kept up this nature, she was sure to fall. If he fulfilled his promises there was no way she couldn’t. “Aur sab se important baat. Main tujhe share nahin kar sakta. Tu hamesha ke liye meri hogi. Teri hansi, teri khushi, tera har gham aur aansu... Sab mera hoga. Tu meri team mein hogi. Jaise main teri team mein. Hamesha.” He declared. She gasped. He remembered? She swallowed at the way his fire was engulfing her. What was he doing to her? Could mere words be so intoxicating? He hadn’t even done anything yet and she was already rooting for him. “Aur jab tak tu nahin chahegi hum is rishte ko isse aage nahin badhayenge. Par ye jo bhi kaha na woh aaj se hi laagu hote hain.”
“Aur main kuch chahun to?” Raavi enquired. Shiva shrugged and signed at her to continue. “Tujhe bhi mujhe samajhna hoga.” Shiva nodded. “Meri har ek baat maanni hogi.” Shiva nodded again. “Kabhi mujhe nahin rulayega!” Raavi told him firmly. He shook his head in agreement. “Kabhi mere alawa kisi aur ladki ko nahin dekhega!” Shiva nodded. “Mujhe khud see door karne ki baat nahin karega.”
“Sawaal hi paida nahin hota. Ab saari zindagi tu meri hi rahegi.” Shiva told her. Peace was settling in her heart. This was what had been missing. “Tel aur masalon ki badboo ki aadat daal de.”
“Kaha na adat ho gayi hai mujhe is mehek ki?”
“Hmm. Accha hai. Ab hug karne mein pareshaani nahin hogi.” He told her mischievously. She blushed but glared at him. He chuckled. She hugged him. He hugged her back.
And then they laid down in each other’s arms, talking about their past, their complains, their dreams. He told her why he suddenly changed his stance today. She told him her feelings about Dev before and now and how much she was happy tonight. He told her about Suman and her heartbreak. Raavi promised him to be by his side and help him fulfill his promises. And for the first time in a long time, the dawn brought them light heartedness and a wish to be with each other always. They were very excited.
And every night after that, they had to speak about their day and also about everything under the sun.

Five months later.
These five months that had gone by were the most amazing five months of their life. The family had been shocked into silence by the turn of events. Except Suman. She had a knowing smile and was very happy for them.
It was eleven in the night and Dhara was waiting for Shiva to come home. Her room had been successfully constructed and so was Shiva and Krish’s. The aangan was now empty. Dhara was sitting on one of the cots that were still placed there and watching the clock tick by.
“Arre Dhara di? Aap soyi nahin?” Raavi had come downstairs to wait for her bhoothnath.
“Kaise soun? Abhi tak Shiva jo nahin aaya.” Dhara said. Raavi smiled at her softly.
“Aap janti hai na Di ki main hoon yahan? Main janti hoon aapko neend nahin aati par ab ye kaam aap mujhe sonp de aur so jayen. Aap janti hai na uske aane tak main khud bhi nahin so paati?” She asked her. Dhara smiled gently and nodded at Raavi. She got off the cot and kissing Raavi’s head she went towards her room. Raavi occupied the cot and began to wait.
Half an hour later, Shiva jumped in through the window. Raavi shook her head with a smile. Shiva saw her and straightened with a smile. His eyes had lit up as he watched her from the head to the toe. She was in one of his Tees and her pyjama pants that she had bought in her latest shopping spree with him. She flushed. She had taken to his T-shirts like the oil to the fire. She felt them comfortable and full of his spicy scent that always seemed to comfort her.
“Soyi nahin?”
“Tu janta hai main tere baghair nahin so sakti.” She pouted at him as she walked towards like he was and then put his hands around his neck as she hung off him. He held her waist to support her. She had grown physically comfortable with him.
“Haan janta hoon. Jab tak lipat kar nahin soti tab tak neend nahin aati tujhe.” She was a cuddler and he wasn’t. He had to adjust cause she didn’t want to compromise on it. “Chipkali kahin ki.” She smiled sweetly at him. He narrowed his eyes. She was sure to sleep on him today instead of beside him. He shook his head at his helplessness.
“Chal na. Khana kha lete hain. Bhook lagi hai.”
“Chal. Main naha kar aata hoon tu khana garam kar le.” He told her softly and kissed her nose. Such actions had been common since a long time now. She nodded and walked away as he checked her out from behind.
“Ghoorna band kar aur ja!” She called out. He chuckled and walked upstairs.
Dev had joined a good job and the money along with the shop profits, much to Rishita’s chagrin, had been used to build Dhara’s room and also other rooms and bathrooms. Shiva didn’t want his room to be built but his opinion had been shot down by the elders.
He bathed and they had food before they went to their room and spoke for a while and then slept. Like he had predicted, she slept on him that night.
•••••
Sic months after the discussion.
He kissed her neck and proceeded to do much more as his hands became busy with her waist. She was sensitive there and he knew. He marked her neck and then made way towards her lips, capturing it with his as he brought her closer.
Their family had come for a picnic and Shiva and Raavi had come for a walk. Raavi chuckled as he started trailing kisses on her cheeks towards her ear.
“Shiva...” She called out. He hummed. “Humen chalna chahiye. Family wait kar rahi hogi.”
“Family ko pata hai hum kya kar rahe hain. Abhi tak to Rishita bhabhi ne partiality ka gaana gaake aur Krish ne apna opinion jhaad ke sab ko bata hi diya hoga. To jaane do unhen. Tu mujh par focus kar.” He told her pulling her closer and fusing his lips with hers again. She pushed him away slightly after a while.
“Humen sach mein jaana chahiye Shiva!” Raavi whined. He sighed.
“Chalo.” He told her. She pinched his cheek and kissed it as he led her back. He just smiled. She was truly happy. They had just changed for the better since their heart to heart. He had stood by her like the pillar of her strength. He had also loved her like crazy.
The family sometimes still became shocked at the lengths Shiva went for Raavi. He sometimes behaved like Raavi was made of glass and had to be handled with care. He allowed no one to scold her wrongly. He kissed her forehead before he left for work in front of the family. He bought her small gifts that she would love. He massaged her legs after every harsh day in the kitchen. He also massaged her head sometimes. Shiva was in love with Raavi. And He couldn’t focus on much when she wasn’t in sight. But Raavi too couldn’t focus when he was away. It was like they had clicked together and now didn’t want any minute separation between them. She was already in love with him. She knew and he knew. But both had left it at that and just continued on loving each other.
They had taken steps in their relationship and had long ago surpassed the physical boundary. Raavi loved it when Shiva was touchy with her. It was she, who initiated most of their sessions back home. She was unafraid to show her love and also liked kissing him a lot. But her sessions always ended with them on bed. His, were more in control. Starting anywhere in the nooks of their house to the store room of the shop, he made sure he didn’t lose control. Hers, always went out of hand as she pushed him to his limits and broke down his iron willed control with her antics. And when he lost control, he finished what she started, anywhere and anytime.
“Lo aa gaye ye dono!” Dev called out to them as they reached their family.
“Chalo jaldi. Hum lagori khel rahe hain. Teams banate hain.” Krish exclaimed as he pulled them both towards the rest of the family.
“Aap log koi bhi team bana lo par mujhe mere bhoothnath ki team mein daal dena.” Raavi told them all. They shook their heads at her as she held on to Shiva strongly. He smiled at her.
“Kabhi to koi aur team join karo.” Rishita exclaimed. Even she joined the team opposite to Dev’s sometimes but Raavi stayed fused with Shiva in every game.
“Mujhe bas dono team ko nuksaan se bachana hai.” Raavi replied straightforwardly. Rishita was confused.
“Woh kaise?”
“Jab main aur ye ek team hote hain to at least apni team ka khel to nahin bigaadte. Alag team mein hote hain to hamesha ye mujhe bachate bachate game haarta hai ya fir main khud game chod kar peeche hatthi hoon taaki ye na haare.”
“To mat karo na aisa!” Rishita exclaimed.
“Aisa mumkin nahin hai. Main koi bhi team mein kyun na rahun, rahungi to sirf iski team mein. Sirf yehi loyalty maaine rakhti hai mere liye, baqi teams ka tum log dekh lo.” Raavi declared happily as she swayed by Shiva’s side. He was strongly balancing her weight as she let go again and again.
“Inse baat karna bekaar hai. Pata nai kaise ek din uththe hi maine inki kaaya palat dekhi! Ek raat pehle jo log kaatne ko daud rahe the, agli subah woh dono ek alag hi dunya mein jaa chuke the. Aaj tak samajh hi nahin aaya ki hua kya!”
Raavi and Shiva met each other’s eyes and smiled. Conversations happened, dil se dil tak.
They all played after that and Enjoyed the family’s day out. Raavi Shiva and their team lost. As the other’s booed for them, they just shrugged and went back to staring at each other. The family just shook their heads in exasperation. Suman smiled knowingly at them. She was proud and happy.
•••••
“Dhara Di!” Raavi screamed in fear.
Dhara had been walking towards them when Raavi suddenly shouted her name and pushed her away, losing her own footing and falling down. Raavi hit her head lightly and exclaimed in pain. Gautam watched the whole thing play out but before he could move towards them, Shiva had begun to run. Dhara had fallen down too.
Dhara smiled as Shiva ran towards her and then her smile disappeared as he passed by her, ignoring her hand and moving towards Raavi. He didn’t even see her. Her heart lurched as she watched him reach Raavi.
“Raavi!” He exclaimed as he picked her up and placed her in his lap. He dusted her hands away. Raavi smiled at him as he kissed her forehead and cupped her cheeks. “Tu theek hai?” Raavi nodded as she stared back in his eyes.
“Main theek hoon.” She responded sweetly.
Dhara watched as Shiva completely ignored the world for Raavi and her heart sank. Her son had grown up so much that he didn’t even realise that his bhabhimaa had fallen too.
“Kya hua?” Gautam reached Dhara and picked her up slowly. He watched Dhara’s pale and ashen face and eyes focussed on Shiva and Raavi. His mind flashed towards what happened some minutes ago and watched Dhara as her heart shattered. “Shiva!” He called out unable to bear her pain.
“Woh Gaumbi. Dhara di Saanp par pair rakhne wali thi abhi.” Raavi informed. “To maine unhen isliye push kiya taki aisa ho na sake.” Raavi told him. Gaumbi nodded at her.
“Shiva?” Gaumbi called out again, pulling Shiva out of his staring session.
“Haan Gaumbi?”
“Dhara par ek nazar nahin dala tune! Woh gir gayi thi!” Gautam said.
“Sorry bhabhi! Raavi aise gir gayi aur use chot bhi lagi thi to mujhe laga use pehle dekh loon.” Shiva reasoned. “Aur waise bhi sab the mere peeche aapko sambhalne.” He felt Raavi fist her hand on his shirt in confusion. He knew what she was thinking. But this was important. He had to show Gaumbi something. Suman had stilled as she watched this scene play out. She looked at her third son and his promises rang loud in her ears.
Gautam felt his heart still. These words were his own. Months ago he had said this to Suman... Is this how his mother had felt when he had uttered them? He could see his wife’s pain today as she felt pained as a mother. But why couldn’t he see his own mother’s pain back when he had done it? He turned towards Suman in repentance and sunk before her as he kissed her hands to the shock of the family. Shiva smiled. He knew his brother was smart and he would realise it. He turned towards Raavi who was watching him in confusion and blinked in reassurance. A promise that he will tell her later. She nodded slightly. He lifted her up and pulled her gently towards Dhara, who was watching Gaumbi. He kissed Dhara’s forehead.
“Sorry Bhabhi.” He uttered softly. “Aap theek hain? Kuch ghalat sudharne ke liye ghalat karna pada.” He told her. She understood.
“Tu mera baccha hai. Mujhe bharosa hai tujhpe.” Dhara told him softly. He smiled and took the first aid box from Krish as he bandaged both Raavi and Dhara as both these important ladies watched him with pride.
Gautam was still whispering and crying to Suman who was sobbing with a smile. She looked at Shiva and blinked in happiness. He blinked back at her. Shiva then looked towards Dhara who was watching him with pride and smiled at her. She then patted his head and walked towards Gaumbi and Suman. Shiva sighed in relief and turned towards Raavi who was already watching him. He pulled her on his lap and kissed her forehead as she placed her head on his chest. His world was complete.
