It was not about mommy issues per say but the Idea was to portray how lonely Bilal is that he doesn't have genuine companionship, he craves for one! He craves for having someone he can have a conversation with but he is so afraid of relationships after what his mom did that he doesn't believe in relationships and marriage. So, the next best thing for him was to buy time of these girls so that they can converse with him. It just shows how lonely and sad his life is.
