Chapter 6

Valli looked at her watch and calculated that less than 15 minutes were left for the session to end. She gestured towards Aravind, 'Dear students, Mr. Krishnasami is here to teach the first lesson.'

Aravind got up with a shocked look, but quickly put on his confidence mask and walked to the front of the class.

Nivedha had no patience and ripped open the parcel before she even reached the office door. She looked mesmerized at the five pink roses and a single white rose along with a small card containing scripted language.

'Dbsf up ebsf? Jg zpv ibwf gjhvsfe uijt pvu, xfbs uif xijuf sptf.'

She couldn't understand the message immediately, but felt curious - just a line, she should be able to find that easily – and she became very excited. 'Nikhil riddles ellam podarane.'

Back in the class- Aravind began, 'Good afternoon everyone.' He recited unfalteringly the first two pages of the lesson, exactly as in the book without missing a single syllable. The class was getting restless.

Valli began losing her nerves. 'Aiyo ennakku nu vandhu vaaikudungale', she let out an exasperated sigh and wished she could bang the man's head against the green board.

She interrupted him, 'I have some questions for you.'

He stopped his monotonous recitation and looked up at her questioningly.

'Can you explain the difference between monomer and polymer?'

He didn't hesitate, 'Monomer is single mer, whereas polymer is many mers.'

There were many suppressed giggles. Valli ignored that and shot the second,

'How would you treat a person with Sulphuric acid burn?'

He asked softly, 'With sympathy?' The laughter increased.

'Oh God, sibarisula vandha thimira? He definitely seems to be enjoying. One more chance, recommendation or otherwise, if he doesn't get this, he goes', Valli decided.

'Last question Mr.Sami. What do you get if potassium and iodine reacted with a sulphide?

He closed his eyes briefly, opened his book and quickly checked the element table and volunteered, 'Get KISS?' The laughter turned to thunderous mode.

Valli was furious, 'Are you really a post graduate?'

'Yes, ma'am', he said cheerfully.

'In chemistry?' Valli asked sarcastically.

'No ma'am, in Political History.' A sudden hush fell over the class.

Valli's head spun. 'Excuse me. Can you step out for a minute Mr.Krishnasami?'

He took his books, gave a merry wave to the class and came out.

'What are you playing at? Who are you?' Valli was breathing heavily.

'Apologies ma'am. I come from the book stores. I came to show you samples of the new chemistry text books we have received this year.' He handed her the books.

'But why didn't you say so before?'

'Ennai enga solla viteenga?' he smiled. Valli laughed apologetically.

'But I must admit the last one was good', she said appreciatively.

He acknowledged it with a 'Ma'am, can I buy you a coffee for the trouble?'

Valli raised her finger and faked a stern, 'Thambi odi poidu, I am married to an Assistant Commissioner of Police.'

'Lucky man, your husband.' She went back inside the class, smiling.

As he walked back to the stores, he walked past a flushed Nivedha holding a clumsily packed parcel. Aravind smiled at her expectantly. But she was too busy to even notice him.

Apologies to chemistry hands – ennakku suttu pottalum chemistry varaadhu (ratham varumngaradhu vera vishayam 😉
