Ok now to more mundane things - how old is old?
we need some clarity on that - say from the 80s to
mid 90s?? so the new can be mid 90s to present,
what say?? no point in quoting the same songs from both sides - instead of lyrics/music debate, it will
become an era debate - this song belongs to old
or new category debate!!!

Meli asked me to join this debate but I don't think I can. Although I love music, I rarely pay attention to the lyrics, so I wouldn't be able to contribute to the debate. That said, I have noticed vulgarity creeping into the lyrics of new songs. (And, many new songs hardly have any melody but that's another debate altogether; maybe Meli can start that one later and I will participate enthusiastically.)

There is one fairly new song whose lyrics I once actually paid heed to. The song was written by the great Vairamuthu -- Anbeh anbeh kolladhey in Jeans. (Sung by my favourite singer, so I paid some attention, and the lovely Aish acted, so I did notice the song sequence.) Apart from the vulgar manner in which the woman's body was described (e.g., Brahman, who was stingy about creating the woman's waistline, was generous when in came to sculpting the part above the waist), what I also found disgusting was the line that went something like I'd drink as a theertham the water that this beautiful woman has bathed in.

I can't say much about the lyrics of old songs except that many were too preachy. But that's about as far as I can contribute to the debate. Look forward to reading what the two teamies have to say. Cheers, Bonheur.
