Dear ones....

I have this situation where i have to baby sit my uncles kids aged 5&7 for a couple of evenings in my house. They have dinner at my place. They are bored with rice, chappathi, macroni & cheese, pizza , idly, dosa ..since their parents make them......and they dont eat spicy food. Can someone give some heathy suggestions for these kids.

Madhu - I have a suggestion - my kids are around that age. Buy the small store tortillas that are already cooked(mission brand works well). Deep fry in oil like puris - they puff up real well but don't absorb a lot of oil as they are already cooked. When cool put it in their plates and ask them to make their own art. I microwave mixed vegetables add salt and pepper, I also give them some kind of meat for the protein - if vegetarian open a can of kidney beans, chick peas, fava beans or any other kind - drain, wash and microwave. Get a bottle of mild salsa.

Make them sit down and let them fix what they want. Mine like to make a hole and fill it with the veggies, meat and salsa. You could also give them low fat sour cream to top all the toppings.

A whole, fun meal with the required carbs, protein, fat and essential vitamins.

Hope his helps.

Niri.

Pat, Thanks for the tip on freezing them, if I ever lay my hands on them.

Sue - Adada.. evlo periya manasu ungalukku.. Very, very sweet of you! Oh.. Mrs.Nair, do you understand Tamil?

Kavitha - I felt like taking both the Pachai milagai & red milagai off your plate. They look verrrryyy fresh and long too. I swear I've never seen fresh red chillies in my life. Once in a while I've seen green chillies turning yellow at the ends, in the Indian store, but I never pick them thinking they are on they are way, rotting. But now I believe that they must be the semi ripe ones, thanks to Pat.
Finally, if I end up making your soup minus the bean curd, noodles, lemon grass and red chilly, do you think it will look/taste anything like your soup? 😆
Me Pavam..

Pat - where did you get the chilly plants? Is it from the Home depot types or imported from Asia? Do you grow it indoors? I want to be able to grow this at home - any tips?

Well, I bought mine at the nurseries (they are everywhere in the spring/summer). It cost me about 35 cent a plant. You can plant one each in a pot or on the ground but they do need alot of sunlight. You can also grow them from seeds but they take a long time. I use, potting soil and micracle growth for planting.

You can also get these plants at Lowes, Walmart or any nurseries. I even bought some jasmine and kanagaparam plants as a gift for my friends from Lowes!

By the way this is the right time to plant and you will see the fruit within two months! So get going if want some chillies girl! 😃

Thanks a lot Pat. I would love to go forth with the idea.

I am going to check out the Lowe's and Home Depot for this plant. What do they call these plants here? Pepper plants? Your 35c deal is unbeatable, I don't think I would ever find anything so cheap here.

Our temps are averaging at 50 degrees F. So if I get the plant, should I plant it outdoors or indoors? At what temp is it safe to put it out? Is yours indoor now?

Wow.. Thanks Kavi, Caryn and Sue for all the wonderful Malay recipes & pics. I should try it out some time for change and am actually a person who likes to try something different instead of making same old, same old stuff!! Infact I often do check lot of websites..usually googling for some recipes based on the ingredients I have got a mood to cook! 😊

Anyhow thanks again for all your wonderful recipes and thanks a bunch to Niri for sharing that fun recipe for kids!. I am sure going to try it out this weekend. 😃

Yes I do understand Tamil and can speak ok ok.lah..but I made a silly mistake once which made me very shameful and after that I became very conscious of difficult tamil words that fall out of my mouth....

I heard someone had committed suicide so I was telling this neighbour of mine who doesn't speak much English (her family members were standing around) :

I said to her that so and so "tavakalai" instead of thakulai (hope its spelt correctly) and the whole lot of them started to laugh at me...😳..frm that day onwards Mrs.Nair has developed a phobia....😳 😭..
