Chapter 37
"I believe that we learn by practice. Whether it means to learn to dance by practicing dancing or to learn to live by practicing living, the principles are the same. In each, it is the performance of a dedicated precise set of acts, physical or intellectual, from which comes shape of achievement, a sense of one's being, a satisfaction of spirit. One becomes, in some area, an athlete of God. Practice means to perform, over and over again in the face of all obstacles, some act of vision, of faith, of desire. Practice is a means of inviting the perfection desired."? Martha Graham
I stood and stared at the jewellery stores as humans thronged in and out. They went in with eyes wide open and they came out with some touching, feeling the new gold chain or necklace that adorned their necks. Some came out with their eyeballs popping out at the sight of a diamond on their finger. I stood and stared and wondered about carbon, gold, platinum and the elements of the periodic table that my chemistry teacher had taught me. I whispered to myself " bro, child what do you want for yourself.' and i heard my voice whisper back" peace, solitude, music, books and a pair of good shoes to run on and a quiet stretch of road to use them to run on."
From molten metal the mighty sword is forged
Appanar iyya stood with azhagan next to him and they watched avini cry softly. Azhagan embraced her gently and whispered that it would be all right. But in his heart he knew that all the soothing and comforting words in the world would not console her for this time and he would be going away for a long time. He knew why he had to leave and he knew that she knew it too and yet her heart was filled with sadness for she had never been away from him for a very long time.
Avini remembered the spirits and how azhagan had been born and knew that a miracle had happened with that kiss and realised that her child was the miracle. She knew that there was a purpose for him and her and that his leaving now was just a preparation and part of his education that would change the destiny of their kingdom. Yet only a mother would understand another mother's grief when her child went away from her or was separated from her.
Azhagan " mother,my gentle, sweet mother.do not worry for no distance is too much for me to cross and be next to you if the need arises and as long as my friend guards this forest, nothing can harm you. The lights of the forest will be here and so will the people of the village to tend to your every need. So just relax and look to the sun for my coming and i will be back soon."
Appanar iyya consoled her and said that everything was for the good of the land and promised her that he would take good care of azhagan.
Avini nodded and then turning towards her son planted kisses all over his head and face and ran her fingers through his long curly hair and bid them goodbye.
The old man and the boy travelled slowly at first, but soon picked up their pace and were deep in the forest and reaching the edges of the pandyan kingdom when azhagan stopped and whispered to appanar iyya that there were people coming on horses and they were heading towards them. Both of them knew that it was wise to avoid contact with other people for there were spies in various guises. They slowly made their way into a dense part of the forest and seeing a small rocky outcrop, climbed on top of it and waited for the people to pass. The sun was behind them as they lay hidden on the rock and they had to wait for a long time before the strangers arrived and quietly watched as the group of warriors passed them below and appanar iyya smiled and whispered to azhagan " it is okay child, for it is just the prince making his way back home. Come let us go pay our respects to him for he is a good and wise man, wise beyond his years."
They stood up and slowly made their way down the rock and the soldiers hearing the noise turned to face the threat. The meeting over both parties went their ways and appanar iyya turned to azhagan and asked him when he had been aware of the prince and his group and how it was that he had known so much in advance.
Azhagan shrugged his shoulders as if to say i just do and both walked in silence as they made their way towards the west.It was getting late in the evening and the setting sun hung desperately as if not wanting to leave its child in the dark.but nature and motion forced its child the earth to spin away from it and carried away azhagan into the night.
This was the first night of their voyage of which azhagan had no clue as yet,but knew that they would be discussing about it soon enough. After eating the fruits they had bought along with them and drinking water, azhagan turned to see appanar iyya climbing a tall tree as swiftly as a monkey. He started laughing wildly and appanar iyya looked down at him from top of the tree and laughed back.
" I have seen many a funny man and laughing wisecrack boy disappear in the night and i dont want to be added to that list after living all these years."
Azhagan " what do you mean disappear ? what danger is here apart from us ?
Appanar iyya " child,i could go on and on about dangers but you will know about it when you see it and by that time it will be too late.Do you think we are back in the village,no we are in the forest and on land that has not seen the feet of human beings.I could tell you about horrifying and scary monsters but for now i will tell you about one and that is the leopard.Unlike the lion or tiger, the leopard does not restrict its diet to what prey that roam these forests but it will take whatever it thinks it can take or food that comes its way.It is one of the most stealthiest and the strongest animals that i have known and i would rather face a raging river or fight ten men than meet a leopard in the forest. So just do as i tell you to do and before you climb the tree, sprinkle lot of dry leaves and broken twigs around the tree for it will alert us if anyone or anything steps on it."
Azhagan shook his head for he had yet to know fear of anything that moves in the forest and the only pain or fear he had ever felt was being away from his mother, avini.
The dark of the night was well over them and the moon was ebbing and in a couple of nights it would be totally black dark and only the stars would guide life from their distant perches.Appanar iyya woke from his deep sleep hearing growls and mewls and fearing that the dreaded leopard was attacking them, he woke up totally alert and ready to fight. Not finding azhagan in the next branch he looked down and saw the boy on the forest floor playing with some animals and to his shock it was not just some animals but a bunch of fearsome looking leopards and they were just lying around, getting themselves stroked, scratched and rubbed by the boy.The leopards mewled like kittens as azhagan played with them and appanar iyya saw for the first time the strange light that glowed in the boys eyes.
He did not know what to make of it but knew that it came from the spirits in the forest and it was their legacy and now the spirits moved in the boy.
Although appanar iyya had interacted with the lights and spirits in the forest,he had yet to fully understand them or what they truly were.He had tried very hard and although he knew that his senses and mind were sharper than the ordinary man, even he could not understand or decipher the lights and the spirits. For a man who believed that everything has a purpose and that everything was on and in a voyage towards something,he had let it go and just did what was told or requested of him.He knew now that although he was nearly dying he had been kept alive for avini and her welfare and eventually for the coming of azhagan.
He sat watching the boy play with the leopards and soon tiring of it fell asleep on one fat and fierce looking one and as he drifted of to deep sleep and went to avini in his dreams, each leopard moved away and sat in a circle around him facing the forest.
Appanar shook his head in amazement and knew that he could really drift off to a deep sleep for nothing would or could cross that barrier of animals who guarded azhagan.
The night, black night came and in the farthest and deepest part of the brain, dreams came to all of them.
Azhagan dreamt of avini as they walked hand in hand and as he led her explaining all the beautiful things that enveloped their lives.
Avini dreamt of azhagan as he lay by her side clutching her breast and with one leg thrown over her body.
Thenmozhi dreamt of the boy as he made his way towards her with the huge lion besides him. She raised her hand to him and he reached out and gently took it.
Kulashekaran dreamt of the boy from the light as he raised him from the ashes to glory.
Maravarman dreamt of the boy as he threw the spear at his heart and he saw the boy fall to the ground with tears, shock and a broken heart.
I dream,you dream,we dream
magic voyages in different realms
some dreams are of extremes
some dreams are mundane and mainstream
dreams of love,dreams of glory
for only dreams are what
we can call ours truly
"We live and breathe words. ... It was books that made me feel that perhaps I was not completely alone. They could be honest with me, and I with them. Reading your words, what you wrote, how you were lonely sometimes and afraid, but always brave; the way you saw the world, its colors and textures and sounds, I felt--I felt the way you thought, hoped, felt, dreamt. I felt I was dreaming and thinking and feeling with you. I dreamed what you dreamed, wanted what you wanted--and then I realized that truly I just wanted you." Cassandra Clare, Clockwork Prince
