she recollected the days when she felt his feet kicking inside her
smiling she had told everybody that it was her son not her daughter
the day when she first glimpsed his tiny form brought tears to her eyes
his first squeal, his first walk and his first word or more like an yelp
all those thoughts so fresh in her memory
but now seeing him wasting away day by day was more than she could bear
a life she had borne, carried and deliverd to this world
was now lying, suffering and she couldnt do anything to help him
very few moments was he awake and all he could muster was whimpers of pain
not three yet and few weeks to his birthday
it was a race which he would lose for death came knocking at the doors of his life
what could she do or what can anyone do
tears, fears and howls filled their room everyday
relations, friends came calling, wishing well and asking her to be brave
early morning she was alone in the bed next to him
when she heard him call mummy and rushed to his side
wiping his forehead she kissed him tenderly
and looking deep into his eyes she closed her eyes
and prayed my life for his but as usual
her prayers fell on deaf ears
wiping her tears she slowly looked up
and realised her son had gone forever
sobs turned to screams for the pain was unbearable
how does one measure or even attempt to
know the pain of a mother who has lost her son

an ode to all you beautiful mothers.

So very touching and got me very emotional too....thats why I said as a Nightingale one need not go thru so much of pain and discomfort coz it doesn't have the thinking capacity to get worked up..!!......😭😭😭

dear sue,
even a nightingale is a mother.dosen't it lay eggs and brood and hatch them.then nurture them.don't you think a nightingale feels sadness if it sees its young ones die.

Satish, that poem about a mother with a dying child touched too many raw nerves in me, so I couldn't even read all of it, for fear of crying.

dear sue,
i dont need acd or elango for moral support for i have you all and that should do.
dear elijay,
sorry if the poem was intense but those words were pretty simple and could not or will never capture a mother's loss or suffering.i saw that at the cancer hospital and at the aids centre in chennai.i am an official blood donor at a few centres and sometimes i get to see some pretty sad stuff.but i guess it is all part of life happiness and sorrow.

hi,
I'm a doctor who once in a blue moon visits this forum...
and it's really delightful to see so many profound thoughts, feelings and expressions zooming from one end of the world to another in this section.
I'm a real life doctor (not a tv doctor!😳) and yes, I've been a direct eyewitness to many deaths in my everyday job. It's not easy for the eyes to see....for the ears to hear...or for the heart to feel when you see people crying and dying around you all the time. It's part of my job and it has gradually become part of my routine life.
But the lessons I've learnt from the dying patients in the ward are amazing. They teach you more than any medical textbook of knowledge could share with you.
I like to ramble too....and here's a poem I wrote to myself when part of me wanted to be professional...while another part of me made me human.....
Next to Children's Hospital, in a hurry
Down the stairs, two at a time
Slowed down by a family, moving slowly
Blocking the stairway, I'm in a hurry
I stop, annoyed, I'm in a hurry
Seeing me, they move to the side
A woman says softly, "sorry" in Spanish
I look down in passing, there's a little boy
Unsteady in gait, holding onto an arm
Head shaved, stitches in scalp
Patch over eye, thin and pale
He catches my eye and gives me a smile
My walk is slower for the rest of the day

And here's a poem for ALL of you to read....
for those who regularly post messages here....
and for all those silent readers out there.....
Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask "How are you?"
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say "Hi"?
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

This poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a New York Hospital.
The girl is no more.
But we are still here.
And so I just thought of sharing her poem with you.....
Have a beautiful day.....

Yes of course it feels sad but only momentary...even our dear elephants do cry like us humans but they leave the dead and carry on moving on with the herd....but us humans can't that easily forget that we even up narrating it..😉 I feel the animal kingdom is a much place better to live in.....👏

hi sue,

I like your way of thinking....
b'coz I share similar thoughts with you.
If you want to live in the animal kingdom.....
Go for it!
But let me tell you the grass only appears to be greener on the other side. Animals act purely from instinct. Humans have the ability to reason and to make decisions not based on instincts.

Animals quite often do kill each other in fights, and it is a natural instinct for them to pick on members of the same species who are weaker than they are. it is natural for the strong to dominate the weak.

And while animals may not have nucleur warheads or electric chairs, neither do they have hospitals where they can cure the sick, or homes where old people can be looked after, or orphanages, or help for people who are sick or disabled or handicapped in any way. nature is pitiless, and has no compassion for the weak or the sick or the disabled. 'Might is right' is the law in the animal world.
Humans have a capacity to do great harm, and also a capacity to do great good. No animal could have discovered penicillin or invented immunisations or blood banks, or plumbing or central heating or dentistry or any of the other things that make our lives more comfortable or agreeable.

Nobody can tell what a dog is saying (if anything) when it barks. You can tell the mood of a dog (angry, happy, sad), but you can't identify any coherent language. if there is one, it remains a mystery.

The instinct to kill is an animal instict, and human beings are at their worst when they give in to their animal instincts. They are at their best when they rise above them.
Dear, if you are proud to be a female....be proud to be a human....
because if you were an animal....
you cannot speak out your thoughts and you would easily be victimised for being the "weaker species".....
and all the other animals would move with the herd while you struggle to move along....
No male elephant is going to move his butt so that you can have a place to sit....
and no male pig is going to open the door for you....
and not even the strongest bull will be willing to make a lifetime commitment with you.....
If you say bluntly that females are better, stronger, more graceful and smarter than males....
it's only because we are humans, and not animals.
And hey....if you still want to join the animal club....be my guest!
I've got to get back to the hospital to deal with sick humans....
you can continue this great discussion with satish....
I'm sure he'll be more than happy to break his head over your thoughts!
Have a great day, sue!

dear sue,
i remember reading this piece about a herd of elephants
near a railway crossing in orissa.while crossing a train junction on of the new born calves got its leg stuck near the level crossing and was unable to get out.sensing its danger all the elephants surrounded it and tried helping it but were totally unaware that s speeding train was about to crash into them.the train eventually mowed into the herd killing all the elephants except the calf.go figure.
five senses for animals, six senses for humans.pray tell me if you find murder, rape, child molestation, killing ,corruption in the animal kingdom.predators hunt only when they are hungry, but human beings kill a 8 ton elephant for its tusk, and murder a rhinocerous for its horn to become more horny.maybe that is the reason why you find most deadly diseases in the homosapiens.
