Part 21
Viraj turned back furiously after evicting the room service guy out of the room towards Nisha. He looked under the bed and found that she had gone off to sleep. She was murmuring in her sleep,
"Doobi Doobi Doobi
Rab khud main Doobi Doobi
Mujhe ho gaya Kya koi toh bata
Ye Jaane Ojhil Raste hain saare mujhpe haste
Kyun Aksar ho jaati hoon laapataa"
He fondly pulled her out and gently put her to sleep on his bed and covered her with a quilt. He settled himself for sleep on the sofa. He kept on watching his sleeping beauty while she slept peacefully. He did not know at what time he had gone to sleep. But suddenly he woke up on hearing the sound of her snoring. Ghosh! How loud did she snore! Even the people in the room next to theirs would be woken up by them.
He put his pillow next to his ears and tried sleeping but to no avail. The snores only got louder and louder. He went to her and shook her telling, "Pushpa darling, don't snore so loudly! I'm unable to sleep!"
Nisha mumbled in her sleep, "What? You're unable to sleep because of your snoring! Then who asked you to snore? Stop snoring and start sleeping!"
He then tried different methods for stopping the snores like turning her from one side to the other. Just after a minute, the snores would start again.
Then he tried holding her nose so that she would not snore and he could start sleeping again. In her sleep, Nisha gave one tight slap to Viraj and turned to the other side before going to sleep again. Thankfully this time, the snores had stopped. He softly kissed her on the forehead telling, "Good night, Nisha. Love you!"
He came to the sofa rubbing his red cheeks, the result of the resounding slap he received. He told himself, "I really have to do something for this after our marriage. I can't go on receiving slaps to make her stop snoring every night of my life. I think we'd better sleep in two different rooms. Anyways let's cross that bridge when we come to it."
Viraj again settled down on the sofa for sleeping. Just when he was about to go into deep sleep, he heard her throwing her arms from one side to the other agitatedly and mumbling incoherently in her sleep. She was having a nightmare. She was saying, "You can erase my memories but how are you going to erase the marks of this V- wound on my hand. It will remind me some day or the other about him. Our love is not so weak as to be destroyed by such evil schemes. He will come for me and that's certain. Both of us will come out of this too together."
Viraj swept aside a tear that rose into his eyes on hearing all that she had suffered alone without him. He could guess the ordeal she had been through. How Shekar must have made innumerable attempts to break her and how she must have faced him courageously. So the V-mark on her hand was a self-inflicted wound. It was a desperate attempt by her to defeat Shekar and remember him.
Viraj could not sleep after hearing those words from Nisha. He spent the rest of the night looking at her with an unblinking gaze. He did not know that he meant so much to her. When Arthi got up, he passed her a piping hot cup of bed coffee and wished her good morning with a scintillating and magnetic smile. She was abashed at all that she had done the previous night not that she remembered them accurately. They were all hazy memories but still she knew that she had been very rash and brash the past night.
And did he take advantage of her in that condition? Not that she could ask him directly because only she was to blame for the previous night. But she still was old-fashioned enough not to think of doing XYZ before marriage. But these sports stars, you never know how they are. He was talking to her about calling that hot model and having a table dance with her and a glass of vodka in his mail. So would he have taken advantage of her?
Just then Viraj switched on the TV in his suite and this epic scene from 3 Idiots sprang to life:
Peechle buttis saal se inhone nirantar is college mein balaatkaar pe balaatkaar kiye ..umeed hai aagey bhi karte rahenge
Arthi looked daggers at Viraj with a big question in her mind, "Did a balaatkaar happen yesterday night? I can't bear this suspense any more. Please tell me by yourself. I can't ask such indelicate things to you being a delicate and sanskaari girl.
hame to aashcharya hota hai ki ek insaan apne jeevan kaal mein itni balaatkaar kaise kar sakta hai ...inhone kadi tapaasya se apne aapko is kaabil banaya hai ..waqt ka sahi upyog ghante ka purna istemaal koi inse seekhe..seekhe inse seekhe
The speech ran on while Arthi continued being troubled by her thoughts when Viraj guessing what she was thinking about said, "Yay! It could have happened if I was not old-fashioned enough to think that you ought not to do XYZ before marriage. So don't worry. My chastity is safe from you."
On hearing this Arthi was greatly relieved. Her respect and admiration for him had grown ten-fold. She had literally thrown herself at him in her Vodka nasha but he had not taken advantage of it. He had not compromised her self-respect. She was about to thank him and apologize for last night when he said, "I'm leaving for Jaipur today. Good bye, Pushpa darling!"
Arthi was very disappointed and dejected. She wanted to ask him to stay back but what rights did she have on him? She was just a mailing friend of his. She was his Puspa darling while he was her Virus. He had saved her once or twice when she was in problems. They had spent a few good moments together. That was it. How could she use that as a basis to stop him?
And what about her past? Not that she remembered anything clearly. But she knew that she had loved and been loved very passionately by someone whom she didn't even remember now. If that someone was still waiting for her and pining for her in some corner of the world? What would she say to him that she just forgot him? That now she was in love with the sports icon Viraj Singh Rathore?
Viraj looked at her being so deep in thought and asked her, "What are you thinking? Do you want me to stay back a few days. You know I would if you asked me!"
Arthi questioned, "Why would you if I asked you? After all what and how much do we know about each other. I don't know myself and you happen to know me only since a few days. My past is still a big question mark. What if I had someone in my life then?"
Viraj took her hands in his and looked into her eyes and said, "Don't ask questions to which you know the answers, Pushpa darling! You are very special to me. And my behavior towards you must have told you that. I love you. And I don't need years and years to decide whether I do or not. (To himself) And for your kind information we do know each other for more than a year. And I'm that past of yours which you are searching. (Says out aloud) Your past is a big issue. I know that. Still I'm willing to wait for your decision. Take your time."
Arthi was very confused. Everything was happening so fast. She so wanted to be Viraj Singh Rathore wedded wife. But how could she do that before putting a proper closure to her past. Her heart broke into a thousand pieces hearing that he was going away. How would she remain away from him?
Viraj said, "I'll drop you home before going to Jaipur. You know that yesterday night is our secret. I don't want anybody to know it. They may misunderstand you and me."
Throughout the car journey both of them were silent. Both of them had a lot to say to each other but words eluded them. Their throats were getting parched at the thought of their separation. They were looking at each other when they thought the other was not looking at them. Finally they arrived at Arthi's bungalow and it was time to say goodbye.
Viraj got out of his car and helped her down. He gave her his hand and wished her, "Alvida, Miss. Arthi. Good bye."
She caught hold of his hand and would not let it go. He kept saying, "Good bye, Arthi...Miss Arthi...Miss Arthi." But it was as if nothing of this was registering on her. All that she knew was that he was going away and that she loved him. The tears were rolling down her cheeks uncontrollably.
Viraj on noticing this took out a tissue paper from his car and wrote something on it and gave it to her. The words on the paper ran like this, "Miss. Arthi you too are normal just like me. Stop crying and keep smiling like Virus's Puspa darling. This is just a coma and not a full stop of our relationship. I'll be back in your life even before you know it scaring the day lights out of you. Many great people say many things about love. I'll say a few intelligent lines of mine too: Love is like a ghost! Once it catches you it never lets you go for life. I'm the Bhootnath of your life. So you better be careful and watch out."
Arthi broke into a soft smile on reading these words. While she was doing so other words kept moving in the background of her mind. Something like, "Viraj Singh Rathore normal hai. Woh kutha nahi hain aur kattha bhi nahin hain!" She brushed them aside and kept on smiling while looking at the words on the tissue paper.
That night while Arthi and Akash were having the dinner, Akash said to her, "Arthi, I've something important to tell you. Our Hotel Group is planning to sponsor Lakshya Academy in Jaipur. I've already spoken to Mr. Viraj Singh Rathore about it. You will be taking all decisions on my behalf. I've made all the arrangements for you to leave for Jaipur tomorrow morning. The Gangwals in Jaipur are my distant family relations. So you will be staying with them while you are in Jaipur."
Now Arthi understood what he had meant by that parting shot. He already knew that she was coming to Jaipur and would be working along with him at LA and yet he made all that drama about leaving her and going simply to irritate her. She told to herself, "Mr. Viraj Singh Rathore get ready. It's payback time!"
