CHAPTER 4

"Advertising has many benefits. These are..."

Navya was pacing in front of her hostel room balcony. She was going through her subject book which she has a test on tomorrow. Suddenly she saw a figure trying to jump inside the campus. She went close to the railing in order to figure out the person but was unable to do so due to the dark.

"Yeh campus mein iss tarah kaun ghusne ki koshish kar raha hain."

Navya decided to find out and went downstairs with a hockey stick of her roommate. As she approached closer, she saw that same figure standing down with his back facing her doing something with his mobile phone.

She took a step ahead raising the hockey stick ready to hit but her leg banged with a can which was enough to alert that person. He turned just in time and held the stick.

"Tum yah..." Navya tried to scream but Anant quickly covered her mouth with his palm.

"Shhh...chillao mat. Poore college ko ekhatha karne ka irada hain kya?"

Navya narrowed her eyebrows in reply.

"Aur ye hockey stick." He snatched it from her and removed his palm from her mouth "Tum toh sach mein mujhe maar dalna chahti ho yaar."

He gave her a teasing smile.

"Mujhe nahi pata tha ki tum ho." She look down guiltily " Vaise, iss tarah chor chakko ki tarah apne hi college mein kyun ghus rahe thae?"

"Toh tumhe kya lagta hain, raat ke 10 baje mera college mein saare gates kholke warm welcome kiya jayega?" He looked at her amused.

"Very funny" Navya looked elsewhere as she was too embarrassed to meet her eyes with him for asking silly.

"Kaun hain vahan?"

They heard a manly voice. Someone was coming towards their side flashing a torch.

"Koi aa raha hain" Anant whispered and looked here and there for a hide. Just then he saw an old cupboard at a corner.

"Jaldi chalo."

He stated and before Navya could react he held her arm and pulled her along with himself inside the cupboard. A dim moonlight was coming inside the keyhole of the cupboard. It was dark and small which made them stand very close to each other. Their eyes met and their faces were inches apart. They were feeling very unusual due to such close proximity. Unable to bear anymore, Navya looked down but Anant's gaze was still fixed upon her.

The watchman came and started flashing torchlight near the cupboard and the plants.

Navya snuggled a bit more closer to him in order to hide from the flashlight.

"Shant raho. Vo hume nahi dekh payega." Anant whispered near her ear and held her close in his arms.

"In sab mein Navya ki koi galti nahi hain. Kuch bhi ho jaye mai usae phasne nahi de sakta."Thought Anant and tried to hide her in his arms as much as possible.

"Arae bhai koi billi hogi shayad chalo yaha se." Came another watchman.

The first watchman nodded and they went from there.

"Navya, vo chale gaye hain." He lightly tapped on her shoulder. She opened her eyes and they came out of that cupboard. Both were feeling really awkward to face each other now.

"Good Night" "Goodnight"

They said together and looked up at the same time.

Both gave an awkward smile and went to their respective places.

It was 2:00 A.M. at night. Anant was turning and tossing on his bed. Every time he tried to close his eyes, he remembers those moments which happened few hours ago. He could not stop thinking about Navya, her eyes, her coming closer to him in fear, their faces inches apart.

"Kya ho gaya hain mujhe? Mai achanak itna kyun sochne laga hoon uske bare mein?" Anant thought confusedly. His mind continued to think about her and eventually he fall asleep.

2 weeks later

Navya and Ritika were sitting inside the library. They were going through their project on the PDF to make any last minute changes. Just then her phone vibrated. It was Deepak.

"Rits, mai 2 minutes mein aayi." Navya told her and went out to attend the call.

"Jee papa."

"Beta, Gudia boarding school se aa gayi hain. Uske summer vacations start ho gaye haina aur ab tujhse milne ki bohut zidd kar rahi hain."

"Gudia aai hain." Navya beamed with joy.

She found Gudia 3 years back in a park in Delhi. Her heart went out for that cute chubby 4 years old kid sitting on a bench and crying. When she asked about her whereabouts, the baby girl told her that she ran away from an Anath Ashram where those people used to torture her and she was told that her parents died. At that moment Navya decided that she will stay with them. Her parents readily agreed and were proud at their daughter's decision.

"Papa main kal he ghar aa rahi hoon. 1 week leave.." Navya stopped abruptly thinking that she need to complete 3 more group projects and she can't leave them in between.

"Vo papa mujhe yaha 3 group projects complete karne hain. Ab main..."

Just then a 7 year old Gudia took the phone from Deepak and said "Di mai samajh sakti hoon. Aapka bohut saara homework hain isliye agar aap mere paas nai aa paoge toh mai aapke pass aa jaongi."

Navya smiled listening to her mature advice.

"Lekin beta tumahre college mein kisika rehna allow thodi karenge." Deepak took the phone and continued.

"Koi baat nai papa main kuch dino ke liye permission le lungi. Bas aap aaj hi Gudia ko mere college chod dijiye. Pleaseee"

Deepak laughed at his daughter's endless please while Gudia also started with her please.

"Acha theek hain theek hain. Mai abhi usae le aata hoon."

"Thank you papa" Navya said and ended the call with a satisfactory smile.

Deepak reached the college along with Gudia. They got out of the car and began to walk towards the college gate. Just then Gudia stopped seeing a huge cherry blossom tree near the gate. Her innocent eyes twinkled seeing those red flowers. She gathered some in a bunch and began playing with them. Just then Deepak received a call from Navya, asking him to come to the Principal desk for signing the application letter of Gudia staying in the hostel along with her.

"Gudia beta ander chale?"

"Nahi thodi der mai please. Mai aa jaongi." Pleaded Gudia.

"Acha theek hain. Straight chalke sabse pehla karma okay." Deepak said and stroked her head lovingly.

"Okay." She smiled back and he went inside.

Gudia continued to play with those flowers just then one of the flower from the bunch flew towards the road. Gudia ran to hold it. Meanwhile Anant came out of the college and his eyes landed upon the child. He was horrified to see a truck coming forth at a great speed towards her side. Without a second thought he ran in the middle of the road and pulled the kid in his arms securely.

Gudia started crying in fear while Anant stroked her head to soothe her.

"Tum theek ho?" Anant asked concernedly.

Gudia nodded her head silently.

Anant thought that the kid has got too frightened to speak a word. He decided to cheer her up.

"So Ms. little princess, yeh lovely flowers kiske liye hain?" He pointed at the bunch.

"Ye meri Di ke liye hain. Mera ek flower uss taraf chala gaya tha isliye mai lene jaa rahi thi ki tabhi..." She swallowed hard as she got to remember that same scene again.

"Chalo joh flower chala gaya, usae jaane do." Smiled Anant and plucked another bunch from the branch. "Tum ye lo. Isse tumahra bunch aur bada ho jayega aur tumahri di bhi khush ho jayegi."

"Thank You Mr..." Gudia thought for a while how to address him then something clicked her mind "Hero. Thank you Mr. Hero." Gudia flashed her toothy smile.

"Hero?" Anant looked at her amused.

"Tumne meri jaan bachai na isliye." Gudia grinned.

Anant grinned back at this adorable kid and patted her cheek lightly.

"Toh kya aajse Princess aur Hero friends ban sakte hain?" He asked extending his hand for a shake.

Gudia thought for a while and then extended her hand "Okay friends."

They shook hands and this marked the journey of their cute friendship.
