Part 3

"Why?" Anant asked.

"Huh?"Navya was confused.

"Why do you think we should get separated?"

"I told you already. I know you like Tanya?"

"Do you really?"

"Is not it obvious? You two have become like BFFs in such a short span of time. You spend all your time with her. Yesterday I saw you two kis..."

"I was not kissing her Navya. She kissed me and it was just a peck. Don't you trust me at all?"

"Yeah, just a peck on your lips. Right? And why are you even arguing. I am setting you free to be with her, just like you wanted."

"I wanted? Then you don't know me at all Navya."

"Huh?"

"All I have ever wanted is you, Navya." There he said it, finally. And now there was no looking back. "i know i have never told you this. But i need you Navya. I cannot even imagine what i would do if you ever go away from me. Agar tum chali gayi toh... toh main kaha jaunga Navya?" he choked at the last part.

Navya just stared at him, disbelief written on her face. "No, it can't be.. it can't be.. how can you.. how can anyone choose me over Tanya?" her voice came as a whisper.

"What? Choose you? Yeh swayambar thodi na hai? You were never an option Navya." Now it was Anant's turn to be confused. Why is Navya behaving like this? Like she is inferior to Tanya? He thought not knowing about her deep rooted insecurity.

"Bullshit, why the hell are you trying to convince me of something that I know is impossible? Why wouldn't you like her? She is everything i am not. She is beautiful, intelligent, she is witty.. i knew i can never meet up to your expectations. I know you tried to make this work, our marriage, maybe that's why i dared to dream.. again. Maybe that's why i started believing in fairytales again. But i forgot even the fairytales are about the beautiful princesses waiting for their prince. But i am no princess nor should i expect any prince to take me away. I can't afford to dream anymore. You don't have to do this anymore; you don't have to bet tied up in a marriage you don't want."

"I understand you like Tanya. And I don't blame you. She is everything I am not. It's not you, it's me. I am no good for you, actually for anyone." "I am used to it when Tanya is concerned." Her earlier words came back to him with full force and realisation hit him hard. She had been so insecure and he didn't even know. No, he didn't even try to know how she was feeling. He failed her as a husband. He wished he could somehow lessen her pain. He decided to at least give it a try.

"Navya tumhe yaad hai jab just after our marriage maine tumpar chillaya tha because i was cranky with tremendous work stress, without even any fault of yours? That day I thought you would sulk the night away like any girl would have. But instead you prepared my black coffee and massaged my head till i fell asleep. You surprised me Navya. No one had ever done that to me, whenever i am angry no one dares to come to me, not even my Ma. They had always let me be. I couldn't even apologise to you though i was buried in guilt. And you didn't need it, you understood. You always have. That day i knew if there is someone i would want to share my life with, it's you."

"You should have apologised, even though i didn't want it. Manners, you know. It would have made me feel even better. And is this the reason you want me to be with you? So that you can always take me for granted?" Navya was not the one to give in easily.

"I am so sorry for yelling at you that day Navya. But I cannot ever think of not having you by my side because... because it's you Navya. I've never thought of anyone else other then you as my life partner. Tanya is just a friend, who i came to know only through you, because you are her best friend. You will always be my priority Navya. I cannot and I won't lead a life without you. I cannot think of not waking up to you every morning, i can't miss watching the way you always open your one eye first when i shake you awake and plead to go back to sleep for five minutes. You know whenever sleep over at Nimisha's place I even miss your talk in your sleep, though it always irritates the hell out of me."Anant smiled fondly at her.

"i can't help it. I don't even know why i talk in my sleep. If it irritates you so much why don't you go to Tanya? I am sure she doesn't blabber in her sleep." Navya pouted; still not ready to give into her idiot of a husband.

Women! Didn't she hear a thing he said? He thought exasperated. But he decided to answer her question honestly. "Because her eyes don't twinkle when she smiles, she doesn't even have the crinkles around her eyed like yours. Because she cannot eat innumerable panipuries at one go and still have room for samosas. I am sure she doesn't even go to moun vrat when she is upset. At least you don't yell at me when you are upset. And because she is not the one who knows me inside out and sooths away my anger even when I yell at her. And how will I even survive without your aaloo pakora and the special bamboo shoot curry?" he asked with all the seriousness he could master.

"You.. you.. you Akadu Bajpai.. You never stop hurting me do you? You always make me cry and you wouldn't even let me go away from you?" Navya burst into fresh tears.

Anant couldn't hold himself back anymore. He reached her in a few long strides and gathered her in his arms. He kissed her hairs caressing her back while she sobbed into his chest. He didn't tell her that she was the most beautiful girl in the world, but he loved her the way she is. And it was all she needed to know.

"Why did you cry last night?" she asked. Navya was lying on the bed with her head on his lap. While he rested his back against the head board, caressing her hair.

"Navya do you remember when you were ready to pull off Nimmi's hair because she accused me of pushing papa to his death? She was right Navya. He died saving me while i didn't pay heed to his words and ran off to the other side of the road to have ice cream. If only I listened to him, he would have been with us today. I am the reason she had to lose her father at such a tender age, i am the the reason she had to sacrifice her wishes to wear pretty cloths, her wish to eat facy food, she never attended college parties because i couldn't afford to buy her a decent dress. I am the reason my ma had live the life of a widow. No matter how hard i try i can never bring back what we have lost. And yesterday it was because of me you were in pain." He carefully avoided Tanya's confession. "i don't how but i always end up hurting the ones i love even though i never mean to do it." At this Navya sat up straight and hugged him tight. Anant buried his face in the crook of her neck and sighed.

"i am glad you let it all out Anant. But you are not the only one who has hurt me." Anant clenched his fist at the thought of someone else hurting his wife. "It was me, Anant. I had always been insecure. I was never confident about myself. So fifty percent of the fault was mine. But I will try to change that. I may get upset at silly things; feel insecure even from your laptop. Please don't give up on me?" she looked at him hopefully with her big innocent eyes. He kissed her lips in answer.

"Navya i am not perfect. Word doesn't come easily to me. I am temperamental, i get cranky when i am hungry and under stress. I may yell at you and not apologise. Just give this idiot husband of yours a tight slap and he will learn.. hopefully. Okay?" Anant put forth the proposition and Navya accepted it with a punch on his chest. "Ouch. I agreed for slap. Remember?" Navya laughed.

"Life is not fairytale where all is well at the end. Every relationship has their up and downs, but there is someone who is worth the effort to move on with it. No one is perfect, everyone has their own imperfections, sometimes it even gets ugly, but we have to live with it. We are the conquerors of our own imperfections. We just have to accept ourselves for who we are." Navya closed her diary when she heard the ringing of the bell. It must be Tanya. She thought. Tanya doesn't make her insecure anymore. Tanya is still her best friend, now in a true sense. She had learned to love herself, and she had her husband to thank for it. She was snapped out of her reverie with the second ring of the bell.

"At last, my work here is complete. Thanks to your husband. Now I can go back home and relax until my boss from hell summons me. By the way please make your bamboo shoot curry tonight for dinner. Tere hathon ke jadoo ne uska smell bhi bearable bana dia. Wohi main sabse zyada miss karungi Mumbai me." Tanya hopped up the stairs throwing Navya a flying kiss on her way. Navya smiled at her crazy friend.

Anant looked at his wife smiling at her best friend. He didn't tell her that this time he truly didn't deserve Tanya's gratitude. She had started avoiding him after that night. She was guilty, she said, and she couldn't bear the guilt of betraying her best friend anymore. He let her be, after all who knew of guilt better than him?

Navya didn't know what exactly happened that night. He made up a story about how Tanya meant to peck him on cheek but accidentally it landed near his lips. He didn't know if she bought it but she never mentioned it again. What's the point of ruining their friendship with such a useless matter? She knew he loved her. And that is enough for him to go on in his life.

Navya noticed Tanya's downcast eyes when she crossed Anant. "Her idiot of a husband doesn't know what a bad liar he is, does he?" she thought and sighed when she felt Anant's lips on her neck and his arms around her waist. Well, some things are best left unsaid.

The End..
