Part 2
Anant could do nothing but stare at her and think how did things turn this bad?'
He knew they had some talking to do, but never in his dreams had he thought that it would come to divorce. "Divorce" he mumbled under his breath, as if in a trance. The word itself seemed to have ability to choke him. How can she talk about divorce when he first name comes to his mind was hers at the thought of home'. No he can't let that happen.
He sensed something was off with Navya going by her expression when she saw Tanya hugging him by his car or did seem him hugging Tanya to Navya? But he brushed it away when she talked to them normally.
Tanya was easy to be friends with. In all her bubbly antics and easygoing attitude she broke through his usual awkwardness with words. He knew she was a striking beauty, pleasant to eyes. But that was that, he appreciated her beauty and charm like any other human being would. It was her as a person that made him be friends with her. They had rather grown close with all the office works and Navya as the common topic to talk about. But he never realised until today that all the while Navya was feeling left out when he was busy listening to her college stories from Tanya.
He knew he didn't try to give Navya as much of his time as he could, his first mistake. But he wanted to give her some time with her best friend, but that proved to be the boomerang. Given their work schedule he and Tanya ended up spending more time with each other than with Navya.
Then, one day out of blue, Tanya told him something that surprised him and amused him at the same time. "Navya is jealous." She said. "Because you are spending more time with me, back then she was jealous of me because her crush turned out to be one of my admirers." She added when he asked why. He didn't know if she was right but he was burning with jealousy thinking about Navya's teenage crush. "Navya is my wife; she has no reason to be jealous of you. She knows me." He had replied. "Oh I know her too, okay? After all she is my best friend; I still tease her for being jealous of her best friend. Though I like it because it makes me feel pretty." She said with a wink. "Well, then I would say you are quite insensitive to your best friend's feelings" he said growing uncomfortable with where the conversation is heading. "Oh come on, she knows me. I am confident about my appearance. Still she accepted me with my i-am pretty-and-i-know-it' attitude. That's why we are best friends. And i get it you don't believe me. But I will prove it to you that she is still jealous of me." She rambled. "You can even use this knowledge to speed up your snail paced love story. Who knows she may even say those three magic words to you. I am sure you two have not confessed yet. Don't worry your cupid is finally here." She added with her signature wink. He couldn't help but smile at her craziness.
She kept her promise, Tanya proved Navya's jealousy. But that didn't speed up their love story; it just cracked their relationship a bit more. During their six month anniversary, when the manager of the restaurant they dined at wished him and Tanya instead of Navya, Tanya stopped his immediate instinct to correct the manager. His words died in his lips when Tanya held his hand under their table and gestured him to keep quite with her eyes. When Navya went to wash room after a while, she told him "she will be silent, too silent, till we get home, silence is her only weapon when she is upset or angry. And right now she is damn jealous. So make your move tonight when the time is right" But what she didn't tell him was Navya had gone to washroom to relieve herself of the tears that threatened to run down her cheeks in front of everyone. If only he knew.
Navya has been extremely quite on the way home, just as Tanya said. He knew he had to apologise to her for making her upset. But a silly part of him was glad that she feels about him the same way as he did. That night Navya didn't give him any chance to talk, so he conveyed his feelings the best way known to him. He made love to her with all the tenderness that comes naturally to him when he looks at her. He kissed her senseless when she tried to push him away. He hugged her close when she turned her back to him. He kissed her eyes when unshed tears blurred her vision. He apologised in his own way, but she didn't understand. He realises it now, when the cruel time is threatening to tear them apart.
Navya can hide her feelings well when she makes up her mind, he thought. After their six month anniversary she acted as if the jealousy incident never happened. She was chirpy, too chirpy? She made his favourite dishes like always, she didn't let him get even whiff of what was going on in her mind. And like the fool he is, he believed in her happy front she put up and would have continue to believe if yesterday Tanya didn't pull her little stunt.
Tanya's stay at their place was coming to an end. Though he was sorry about her departure, he was looking forward to spend time with his wife alone. Yesterday when he was working in his study, Tanya came to him. As usual, she started the conversation. He was amazed at how she never ran out of topics to talk about. He was half listening and half concentrating on his work when her one question halted his furiously typing fingers on the keyboard. "Would you have married me had I come to your life before Navya did?"
"why would you even ask that?" he asked dumbfounded.
"It was just a question. Tell me"
"i don't know. But had i met Navya after meeting you i would have had my first affair with her" he tried to keep the conversation light hearted.
"So I thought. I don't know if it's right to tell you this, but i think i am attracted to you, Anant."
It rendered Anant speechless.
You know Anant, i have always teased Navya about being jealous of me, but never in my life had I thought that I would be this jealous of her. She is one lucky bitch." She smiled fondly.
She was wrong, i am one lucky bas***d, he thought
"Mr. Always tight-lipped, don't worry i am not female villain straight out from the Indian tele-soaps, i am not going to try to break your marriage, though i cannot guarantee that if you decide to have your first affair with me." She smiled through her tears.
Anant was fond of Tanya. He had always considered her as a dear friend. He regretted that things had to turn out this way.
"Anant" she called out softly.
He got up and went towards her to offer her whatever comfort he could.
"Anant i know you love your wife, and though I am happy for Navya, i can't stop thinking how it would be to have you to myself, to have you love me the way you love her. I guess it's your never faltering love for your wife attracted me towards you. I wish i could experience such devotion. I know that's not in my destiny. Everyone i met till now wants to be with me for my appearance. And my beauty binds them to me only till they gets bored of it, or i get bored of their lust." And with that she hugged with all her might. Anant stood rooted to the spot, shocked with the sudden hug. Whether she took advantage of the situation or she acted on impulse, he didn't know, but in the next moment she was kissing the corner of his lips. He saw Navya's retreating back when he broke out of his stupor and hugged Tanya while caressing her hair. He didn't know why he did that, but he couldn't see the bubbly Tanya so broken. May be he thought Navya would understand or maybe he was moved by Tanya's pain, his only friend who broke through all his reservations and loved him despite knowing he was someone else's, that her love will always be unrequited. Or the friend who was insecure in her own world, world of an extraordinarily pretty girl.
After calming Tanya down and promising to bring her own prince charming he half ran half walked to Navya. He saw her petite form lying on the massive bed. He knew she was not sleeping, but he also knew she was too hurt to talk to him. Still he couldn't help calling out to her. She didn't respond. He could sense her pain, betrayed by not only her husband but also her best friend. He thought about Tanya too. He was the cause of both of their misery; life has brought him back to the same place again where he was the cause of every pain. Years ago his father died trying to save him from the speeding truck, he still remembers his mother's empty eyes, and his sister's accusing eyes. He had toughened himself then, working hard to bring back the light of his mother's eyes and happiness in his sister's life. But now, the clogged tears fell freely in his wife's soothing presence.
Yesterday he should have talked to Navya, he shouldn't have fallen week when she needed him. When he could comfort Tanya, he could have soothed away Navya's misunderstanding too. He didn't. But not anymore. He was not going to push Navya to the back of his to do list anymore, thinking she would understand. He really needed to have a talk with her. And talk, he will, if that's what can bring his Navya back to him.
