Kyunki TV stars are superstitious

October 4, 2006
It is said that television stars are a superstitious lot. We decided to put the theory to test. Here's what some top small-screen celebs had to say: Shweta Kawatra

It is normal to be superstitious. Most people are. However, celebrities are always under the spotlight, which is why this side of them is revealed to the public. Everyone knows about their beliefs. My husband and I are not superstitious. My mother may tell me something now and then, but she doesn't force me to follow anything. I used to wear a 'Pokraj' ring ten years ago, but it didn't do anything to my fortune, so I took it off. It looked pretty on my fingers, so I wore it. After some time, I took it off. I am not rigid about these things. I have become less superstitious over the years. That has something to do with the fact that my belief in myself has increased. You get wiser with age. I cut my nails at night because that is the only time I get to cut them. My mum asks why I do it, but I tell her it's okay. I don't get bogged down by superstition.

Shilpa Kadam I am superstitious like most Indians, but I'm not rigid about it. Most people are superstitious whether they speak about it in public or not. Everybody wants to go to a fortune-teller. It's not cool to admit to these things in public though. I believe the more successful you are, the more superstitious you get. It is the materialistic attitude and fear of losing what you have that makes one superstitious. If you accept the fact that success is temporary and nothing is going to last forever, you will outgrow fear.

Too much attachment is not good. One must be practical enough to understand that you may be on top today, but someone else as deserving will be there tomorrow. You cannot stop that cycle of life. My mother is more superstitious than my father who, as an Assistant Police Commissioner, can't afford to be superstitious. He cannot find an auspicious time for a shoot-out; his job doesn't give him that luxury. I have passed that phase in life where one blindly follows one's mother. I have figured out what works for me and what doesn't.

Shilpa Saklani I'm not really superstitious. I will not follow something if there is no logic to it. They say you must not cut your hair at night, for instance. One doesn't disbelieve such things completely though, because there is always some kind of science attached. They haven't come out of nowhere. I am not rigid though. If I remember, I avoid cutting my hair at night. If I don't remember, I cut it. I cannot lead my life keeping all that in mind. I have never been worried about wearing a particular colour on a particular day. I find all that nonsensical. Life is already complicated, why complicate it more?

I do follow certain things, like not buying a new car or house during 'pitrupaksh', or praying for ancestors. However, if a friend's birthday were to fall in this period, I wouldn't think twice about buying a gift. I am fine with signing contracts during this period. I don't get bogged down by superstition.

Amit Sadh I am superstitious in a way. There are a few things I am particular about, like not arranging any meetings on Tuesdays, for instance. They aren't lucky for me. I avoid wearing black for meetings. Nobody in my family is superstitious though. Actors are the first to get caught by the superstition bug. When a man acquires something, he wants to hold on to it. That adds to his fears.

Somebody told me that certain things would work in my favour and certain things wouldn't. A friend of mine gave me a pendant that I wear to ward off the evil eye. You need to create a balance though, like everything in life.

Pooja Bedi When you achieve something and find success, you do everything in the book to hold on to it. I am superstitious to a certain extent. I would spit seven times if a black cat were to cross my part. As long as it doesn't hurt, why not follow it? You either read about these things or hear about them and they stay with you. What's the big deal? According to Feng Shui, for instance, bamboo shoots in a corner bring in good energy. Bamboo shoots make my home look beautiful. So, if I can get beauty as well as good energy, why not go for it? My father isn't even remotely superstitious. My mother was more into astrology and mythology. I bumped into an astrologer who told me to make a choice -- she asked me to wear a ruby ring for success in my career or a diamond ring for love. The two counter each other. So, the next morning, I got myself a 2-carat ruby ring, which now sits prettily on my finger.

At this point of my life, career is a priority. I have a successful show on TV, don't I?

Rajeshwari Badola I am superstitious when it suits me. No one on my mother's side is. For them, every day is a good day. My mother-in-law is more superstitious because she is more aware of these things. I usually go by instinct. There are certain things I avoid on the basis of advice from elders -- like not cutting my nails in the evening, for instance.

We follow these things for our own satisfaction. Parents don't want to take chances with their children, which is why they get superstitious. I don't wear any rings. It's not like I don't believe in astrology, I just haven't met an astrologer who could convince me. Also, if there's no harm in changing the way your name is spelled, why not change it? There's nothing wrong with being superstitious, provided you don't let it dictate your life
