"Slow the car down papa" Avni shouted
Ashish was heavily drunk and Ayesha had already passed out

Ashish's eyes blurred, he pressed down on the breaks, again and again
"Avni, jump" Ashish shouted but it was to late

The car dropped over the cliff under the water
The car knocked into a rock and sunk more under

Avni's eyes closed as she went further under
"Papa" she tried to shout but all that released from her mouth was bubbles

Kicking at the car door she tried to get out again, panic set in her system as a wave threw the car over again and Avni passed out


*Beep Beep Beep* the machines the only sound Avni could hear

"Hello, Avni can you hear me" a nurse asked
"Hm" Avni replied, opening her eyes, but still she saw nothing

"I cant see" shouted Avni as she panicked
The nurse tried to calm her down as she screamed

"My parents, my parents, what happened to them"
"Dead, im so sorry" the nurse replied

Avni screamed again loudly
"We're going to have to sedate"
Injecting Avni she passed out


A week later, Avni was home, Dayavanti grabbed her by her hair
Shoving her outside
"I wont have a blind grandaughter"

Avni fell to the floor, her hands graspes the pavement as she wretched and vommited.

"Embarrassment, you tried to save the girl" Kailash shouted

Lifting the hot rod he placed it on Neil's face
"In this family, there is no respect for women, be a man, a strong man or you are nothing " he hissed in his ear

The sound of Neil's scream was music to Kailash's ears
"Next time, remember this punishment when a woman catches your heart"

Neil rolled over in pain, his sizzling skin burnt as he passed out

Neil awoke with the memory, 3 years ago his face had been disfigured, he had been a source of mockery

But then , Neil was a boy and now he was a man

Carrying on the family's wishes, becoming the person his Uncle wished

Standing up he walked out of the room, lighting a cigarette he puffed on it

Pictures of his love Juhi smashed on the floor
Khanna's had no hearts and even if they did, there was certainly no place for women there

Neil sat himself down at the mansion, he watched the female dancers walked in

Lighting his fag, he took a puff before looking at a girl who stepped awfully slowly as she walked on stage

She definitely didnt look like she fit in with the crowd and looked nervous
Her nose moved slightly and then her face screwed up

Neil smirked looking at his cigarette

The girl walked forward, reaching out for the microphone
Neil turned to the man next to him, intrigued

"Who is this girl"
"Avni" he replied

"Avni" he repeated, tasting her name on his tounge

Avni began to sing

"Two am, where do I begin

The silent sound of loneliness

Neil was thrown by her voice, leaning forward
"Hey, this isnt the usual kind of music"
He stood up, putting his hand up to stop the man

Avni continued to sing as she stood back and spun, she had finally found her feet, like the music had changed her somehow, given her strength

Avni stopped, wiping her eyes she took a deep breath
Neil walked closer till his knees hit the stage

The song she sang both passionate and heartwrenching, he had understood loneliness for the past 3 years

Avni walked forward, sitting down she crossed her legs, her eyes closed again

Avni opened her eyes, standing up
Neil put his hands together clapping, others joined in
Avni nodded and was helped off stage by another woman

Neil watched her go, confused and interested in the enigma that was Avni

Neil followed Avni behind the stage
When the other woman saw him, she put her head down and walked away

Neil grabbed Avni's arm, twisting her around he pinned her to the wall
"Who are you"

Avni gulped "Avni Mehta "
Neil furrowed his brow "What are you doing here"

"Currently being held against a wall"
Neil huffed out a snigger

"I mean why are you working here"
Avni shrugged "The same reason why everyone else works here, I need money "

"Dont be smart with me, can't you see who I am"
Avni laughed bitterly at that

"No I cant, im blind, I cant see a thing"

Neil pulled back in shock, she had no idea who he was or what he looked like
His fingers absently stroked his scar

He leant close to her ear "Im a Khanna, Neil Khanna to be precise "

"Was your name meant to instill fear in me or something"

Neil glared at her shocked
Did she not know who he was? The things he had done?

"Get out of here, this place isnt for girls like you"
"Girls like me" she asked

But Neil had already walked away
Avni sighed heavily as she tried to find her way around the room

Avni felt her way around the walls till she felt the fresh air hit her face, tucking her money into her purse she sighed

A man watched her from the distance
Walking closer, he wrapped his arm around her neck, lifting her from the ground

Kicking her feet she struggled, her hands went up to the man's arm as she scratched at it , he dropped her to the floor

"Help" she shouted
Neil was about to take another sip of his drink, pausing he turned around

The man tried to pull at Avni's bag but she held on tightly
Neil walked forward, tapping the man on the shoulder he punched him in the face

The man fell to the floor "Neil saab, you"
Avni looked around trying to sense where Neil was

Shoving his foot down on the man's hand he dragged him up by his collar "Touch her again and I will kill you"

Letting him go, the man flung back before running away
Neil helped Avni up

"Yeah that's right run chicken, I was just about to get up and kick your ass" shouted Avni

Neil laughed loudly, Avni turned back to face him
"What's so funny, I was going to kick his ass but you stepped up and saved him from a preety huge beating "

Neil shook his head "Youre strange Avni"
"And you're drunk" replied Avni

"Can I take you home"
Avni shook her head "I dont have one but thanks"

Going to walk away, he tugged her back
"What do you mean, you don't have one"

"Exactly what I said"
"Why"

Neil rolled his eyes "Come on, I have somewhere for you to stay"

Avni stood back "Look, I know self defence and if you try and take me into a dark alley to kill me, you will suffer the consequences "

Avni stretched her arms for good measure
Neil had enough of her nonsense , dragging her with him to the car, throwing her in he slammed the door shut

"Dont kill me" Avni begged
Then stopped
"Arre bacha dont give him ideas"

Neil shook his head and started the car
Finally arriving at his house, he stopped, got out and pulled her door open

Avni stepped out slowly, faltering she fell into his arms
Why was he even helping this girl?

There was no place for women in a Khanna's heart or home, he knew that, so why was he letting her in his?

Putting her straight, he pulled her into the house and into a room
"Here, a room, with a bed, a place to stay"

Avni stopped "Is this your house "
Neil nodded, then remembered she couldn't see

"Yes"
Avni squealed loudly and wrapped her arms around his waist " There was me being stupid thinking you would kill me, but instead you're helping me"

Neil looked down at Avni, human contact so foreign to him
His hands clenched by his sides

"Im so silly you can hit me if you like"
Avni pulled back
Neil shook his head in dismay "I'm not going to hit you"


"Oh good, because I really didnt want you to ruin my face I happen to quite like it"

Avni found her way to the bed and sat down, smiling

He liked her face

Avni heard a bang, standing up out of bed, she reached across for the door handle

Pulling the door open, she followed the sound

"Neil"
Neil turned to face Avni
"Avni , what are you doing awake"

"I heard a sound and I, woah" her foot stood on the smashed glass

Neil reached out, picking her up he took her to the kitchen, sitting her on the side
Cleaning up her foot

"Neil"
"What Avni"
"Are you okay"

Neil looked up at Avni
"I see right through this facade, big bad men dont help homeless girls and clean their injuries"

Neil stood up straight "You dont know me, you dont know anything about the kind of man I am"

Neil's breath fanned over Avni's face, Avni's fingers tightened around his collar

"You're living a lie Stranger "
Neil banged his fist on the side, making Avni jump

Her hand reached out for his
"These hands have killed and brought pain to me Avni"

Neil's breathing turned heavy, yanking Avni's hips forward he neared her ear

"Dont mistake this madness for kindness, I am a monster"
"Is that just what you want me to believe because you're going to have to do a lot more than that"

Avni reached out her hand, stroking his face, making Neil freeze
Her hand scathed across his burn

Neil grabbed her wrist
"Don't" Avni whispered
Dropping his hand, he allowed her to continue her investigation

"Who did this to you"
"Khailash Khanna"
"Hes the real monster, not you"

Neil sucked in a sharp breath
"Why are you being so nice to me Avni"

"Merely truthful"
"Be careful Avni, youre playing a dangerous game"

Her hand still rested on his cheek
"This isnt a fairytale Avni"

Neil was silent, he had no idea what to reply to that comment
"Take me to bed Stranger"

Neil carried her to bed without complaint, lying her down, he pulled the blanket over her and wondered how something so fragile, positive and wonderful had landed in his eyesight and then within his grasp

Walking out he lowered his head
" Take her away, all I am capable of is destroying"

Avni listened to his words
"Ill help you Stranger, just like you've helped me, I'll never forget this favour"

Neil looked up at Avni, the money in his hand
"What is that for" Neil asked

"You're letting me stay here, I have to give you something"
"Do you know how rich I am? I dont need your money"

"I dont care if you need it, its a matter of pride"
Neil reached up and tucked her fingers back over her money

"Keep it"

"I said keep it"
Avni huffed and turned and walked away

Neil paused "Avni, how long have you been blind for"
"Whats the date today "
"28th of december"

"3 months Stranger"
Neil watched as she moved away from him, he wanted to ask how it happened but some things werent easy to speak about

Avni was about to walk into a wall, Neil wrapped hid arm around her waist and tugged her back

"Woah, what are you doing"
"Trying to make sure you don't hurt yourself"

"Oh, well thanks, can you just show me to the bathroom"

Neil walked her over to the bathroom
Going to pull away, Avni hissed in pain

"My hair is caught "
Neil looked down to see some of her hair around his shirt button


Removing it, she thanked him
His phone rang as she slammed the bathroom door

"Neil, how have you been"

"Good and you"
"Yeah, great, im coming to visit soon"

Neil's eyes widened, Avni had to be out of this house now
"When"


"Next month "
Neil sighed in relief
"Ill see you then"

Avni made her way to the table, pulling the chair back she sat down

Her head was full of memories of her parents today and needed a distraction

Neil sat opposite her, watching intently as she looked down at the table
He wondered how life would be without eyesight, something he had taken advantage of for to long

"What are you looking at"
Neil jumped "How did you know"

Avni smiled "You learn how to notice these things"
"Look Avni, theres something you need to know"

Avni nodded
"The Khanna's , they dont take well to women having any respect, they think women are lower than them, so none of my family can know you're here"

"Do you think differently then" she asked
Memories of Juhi flooded his head

"Not really, but I couldn't in good conscience leave you on the streets to fend for yourself"

"Actually, that shows you are nothing like your family, you saved me and you didn't have to "
Neil huffed "Must you point this stuff out all the time"

Avni smiled largely "Of course, I wont stop till my point is proven"

"And what point is that"
"The point that you are good"


"Be careful Avni, you're living a lie"
"No stranger, you are"

Avni made her way to the ringing phone, feeling around she grabbed it

"Hello Tillu, 3 days and you haven't called yet"
Avni flinched at the screeching down the phone

"Hello, who is this"
Shweta gasped "What you mean who is this, who are you"

Avni tried not to laugh "Im Avni, um Neil's house guest"
" A lady friend" Shweta screeched

"Yes" Avni replied
"A prostitute" Shweta screeched even louder

Avni's eyes widened "No, no, I am just staying here as I have nowhere else to go"
"Tryings to steal my Tillu's moneys"

"His what" Avni asked , confused
"Moneys" Shweta shouted again

Neil grabbed the phone off of Avni
"Mum, ill call you back later"

"That was your mother, jesus" Avni muttered
Neil raised his eyebrow "Did she scare you"

"Nothing scares me"
Avni looked down "But she, terrifies me, she accused me of being a woot woot"

"A what" Neil leaned closer confused
"Prostitute" Avni said gritting her teeth

Neil laughed loudly, throwing his head back

"Its not funny she said I was after your moneys"
"You mean money"

"Nooo she said moneys"
Neil laughed again

Avni tutted and walked away
Neil shook his head as he watched her leave
