Hey all back again with my next chapter.. I know I have been a bit slow in updating.. thats why this chapter is extra long.. Hope you all will like it.. 😉
Chapter 8
When Bela returned to her room at Parco Tirreno, she immediately thumbed through every page of her Lonely Planet phrasebook, desperately in search of the sentence Mahir had said to her.
Sono innamorata di te. She had repeated the phrase over and over in her head from the second they had parted ways at the basilica. When she'd tried to repeat it to the clerk at the front desk of the hotel, he'd handed her a shower cap. She couldn't possibly be pronouncing the words properly. Bela refused to believe that it was merely a classic Mahir prank.
It was difficult locating the phrase. All the sentences and words were in English first, followed by the italicized Italian. She had already been through the book twice trying to locate it.
Eventually she found it. There, on page 120 staring back at her, was the translation. Her face reddened; her heart felt like it was ready to leap from her chest.
I'm in love with you.
Sono innamorata di te.
Bela was stunned. She had to have remembered his words incorrectly. There was no way that he would have uttered that translation, especially if he was in Rome with Anu.
Slamming the book shut, she threw it across her bed in frustration and swatted at an errant tear that had found its way to her cheek.
So, stupid, she thought to herself. She had managed to get her hopes up again. Just like before, she was willing to believe that there might be something more, that he too was invested like she was.
Again, she was left alone, staring at the ceiling wondering: what if...
...
Mahir couldn't wipe the grin from his face. Lying in bed, he'd flung his arm across his forehead and replayed the night over in his head. He couldn't believe she was there in Rome, with him. She could be next door. That thought alone left him overwhelmed and excited at the same time.
Seeing her in the piazza with her contagious smile, laughing and dancing- it had left him light headed. He could still feel her arms around his neck. It seemed like nothing short of a miracle that two people who'd avoided each other for so long could be thrown together half way across the world.
Tomorrow was his chance. After all this time, in a few hours he'd finally be able to hear why she'd left so abruptly, why she had moved to a different state. He wanted desperately for them to move past it, to return to what they used to have together. Part of him feared that Bela held some resentment toward him because of his transfer to Delhi and subsequent return with Anu.
Anu...
It seemed cruel of him to be thinking of Bela when just hours earlier he'd broken up with Anu, ending their relationship for good. But he'd already done Anu the disservice of thinking of Bela while he'd been with her. At this point, he figured what he did could hardly matter.
He wondered if Bela had figured out what he'd said to her in Italian. It was so like her to carry around a phrasebook; she was always eager to please everyone she met. The sentence Mahir had chosen was purposeful. He'd noticed it the first time he'd flipped through it and took a chance in saying it when she'd agreed to meet him. The translation still haunted him.
I'm in love with you.
He was still in love with her.
Three years ago, he'd convinced himself that he wasn't when she'd left Mumbai. He had done it again when he saw her Facebook messages. But when he saw her dancing in the moonlit piazza- the drumbeat matching the thumping of his heart- he knew in that instant, that in all those years he had been lying to himself, denying what he truly wanted. What he ached for.
In retrospect, it was a daring move for him to make. She'd rejected his advances in the past and who was to say she wouldn't do it again? Perhaps it was the jovial music, the laughter from the crowds or her familiar smile that pushed him to take a chance again. Somehow Mahir knew that once he'd said the words, everything else would fall into place.
...
As Bela approached the portico at Santa Maria in Cosmedin, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. She had tossed and turned for much of the night and was now feeling its effects.
She figured that she could sketch the Bocca della Verit while she waited for Mahir. Stepping away from the crowds filing through the church, she pulled out her sketch pad and a small flat tin from her bag. From the tin, she chose a thin willow charcoal stick, figuring that differentiating her technique could produce a unique result.
Sunlight bathed the top half of the Mouth of Truth, leaving the bottom half encased in shadow. In her own world, she proceeded to map out the circular shape, careful to note the brightly lit areas. With much of the detail subdued, she ran her finger lightly across the shaded elements, blending the charcoal into the page, creating a balance between light and dark.
"The legend is that if you're given to lying and put your hand in there, it will be bitten off," said a voice from behind her, startling her from her reverie.
Recognizing the line, she replied with a feigned Audrey Hepburn accent. "Oh! What a horrid idea!"
"Let's see you do it."
Bela turned to face Mahir. Of course, he'd recognize the Mouth of Truth from "Roman Holiday" and of course he'd remember the lines uttered by Hepburn and Peck. It's what made him Mahir.
"Hey," she smiled.
"Can I see?" He pointed toward her sketch. She handed him the book, wiping her blackened hands on her jean capris.
"It still needs a lot of work. It's not illuminated correctly and the faade-"
"It's perfect," he interrupted, his voice filled with awe. "I love the detail around the mouth. It's amazing."
"Thanks," she replied shyly.
Mahir carefully turned the pages, admiring the drawings she had done of sites throughout the city. "Bela, these are fantastic. I can't believe..." he paused, his eyes leaving the page and meeting her own. "They're beautiful."
Bela lowered her eyes and kicked at the cobblestone with the tip of her sneaker. She took the sketch book from him, carefully returning it into her bag.
"Let's see you do it."
She looked at him confused. "What?"
"Let's see you do it," he motioned toward the Mouth. His eyes narrowed, daring her.
"No way! You first," she laughed. "My fingers are too cute to get bitten off."
"Oh, and I suppose mine are expendable?"
"Absolutely."
"What do you suppose my basketball team's going to say when I go back to Mumbai with nubs for fingers?"
"That maybe you should take up soccer instead?" She teased.
"Fair enough," he said with a chuckle.
"Quit stalling, Seghal. Let's see you man up," she challenged.
"Fighting words there Bela."
Grinning, she shrugged her shoulders. Mahir lifted his arm, bending it at the elbow. Wiggling his fingers and shaking his wrist, he did a quick jog on the spot and bounced his head from shoulder to shoulder.
"Hurry up already, Mahir. These ruins aren't getting any younger."
"Ooh. Those cute fingers are attached to one bossy woman." How he missed their banter. It was the one thing that used to get him through the monotonous days at Seghal Company.
"Ready?" He asked.
She nodded in reply. Mahir slowly brought his hand to the Mouth, fingers moving dramatically, inching their way into the abyss. Before she knew it, his hand was fully inside.
"Now tell a lie," she ordered.
Mahir thought for a second. Finally, he narrowed his eyes toward Bela and said slowly: "Ajitabh is my hero. I just love hearing about his Lord of the Rings role playing games."
Bela's eyes widened. Her lips pursed to curb her laughter, waiting for the Mouth to come crashing down on Mahir's fingers. When nothing happened, Mahir burst out laughing.
"My basketball team will be happy to know I'll still be able to spin a ball."
"You're not out of the woods yet, Mahir."
"Oh?"
Pausing, Bela realized that this was the moment she had to gather her courage, had to confront him about their past. "Tell me the truth Mahir..."
"That I really do like Lord of the Rings role playing games...?" he asked, teasing.
"I'm serious Mahir." Her face had grown still. Her familiar smile was now replaced with a nervous quiver on her lips. "Why Anu?" She whispered.
Stunned, Mahir hardly knew how to reply.
"Why?" She repeated, her voice barely audible.
He took a deep breath and lowered his eyes. "I needed... I wanted to just forget," he tried to explain, his voice catching on his words. "I needed to escape..."
"Escape?"
"I don't know, Bela. I needed to escape everything: you, Mumbai... Anu was a way to forget it all."
"And now? Why are you here with me and not with Anu?" She asked, hesitantly, motioning at the portico.
"We broke up Bela... ever since I got your first message from Facebook, I just couldn't..." He stopped, realizing his hand was still ridiculously in the Mouth of Truth. He pulled it out and looked at her.
"Your turn."
Bela was surprised at the abrupt interruption in his explanation. "But-"
"Your turn," he repeated.
She bit her bottom lip anxiously. It was the moment she'd promised herself days earlier. This was her opportunity to tell him- to explain everything- every mistake she'd made, every lie she'd told herself.
Moving toward the Mouth, she stared at it, daring herself to take a chance. She needed to take a chance with Mahir and ultimately on what would happen if she confessed the truth. Sucking in a breath, she shoved her hand into the Mouth. Raising her eyebrows, she looked up at Mahir.
"Why did you leave me Bela?" He asked, pausing. His eyes coloured with sadness. "If you'd... if you'd just told me, I would have stopped you..."
"I know," she said matter-of-factly. "I couldn't be there anymore. I couldn't watch you with Anu..." Her voiced dipped into a whisper, fearful of his reaction. "I'd fallen in love with you, and I didn't know what to do..."
At that moment, she realized for the first time that they had even more in common then she'd initially thought.
"Why didn't you say something Bela? An email, a phone call, anything...?" She shrugged her shoulders, not knowing how to answer. It was obvious to her what she should have done, what she could have done- what she didn't do.
"Sometimes you must run away to see if someone will follow," she said quietly.
At her words, Mahir's heart dropped into the pit of his stomach. He didn't know how to respond. He couldn't find the words that would make everything better, that would make all the misunderstandings disappear. But he needed to say this...
"Seriously Bela"... "Every day at the Company I was literally following you. Bela looked down at her shoes. She could not face him. He was right. "Bela, you knew that I liked you. but you never took me seriously". "Not even in the casino party".
How could Bela forget about the casino party. It was there where Bela and Mahir shared their first kiss. Bela remembered having a huge fight with her that time fianc Vikrant. Vikrant wanted to leave the Seghal casino party early and wanted Bela to leave early too. Vikrant always had a bossy nature over Bela. But this time Bela was having a good time with Kuhu, Ajitabh, RJ, Vish and Mahir. All her co-workers.
Flashback...
"Vikrant leave me". Bela said at the parking lot. "I am not going with you Vikrant". "But Bela" Vikrant said... " NO Vikrant not this time... I am tired if this". Bela took her bag from Vikrant's car and left him alone at the parking lot. Just when Bela was going to enter the Seghal company Mahir came outside.
"Bela...I want to talk to you". Mahir said. Bela looked puzzled. "ya tell me".
"Bela I can't handle this anymore... I see the way he behaves with you... he does not deserve you... why don't you get that"... "Not again Mahir".. Bela was just going to leave when Mahir grabbed her hand... "Who are you running from Bela".
"Nobody Mahir"... And stop interfering in my personal matter". Mahir gave a chuckle.. "Are you serious... every time you have a problem with him. you came to me and talked about it... Bela you are my best friend" ... Bela could not handle this anymore. she was scared to lose it... she can't... she is soon getting married... Bela chose to be silent and looked down at her heels.
Mahir saw Bela was helpless and did not have any answer... He was clear what he wanted. It was the right time to confront Bela.
"You know what I can't do this anymore. I can't be your friend. Bela looked up at Mahir. Bela gave a worried look. It was like somebody was taking her heart out. Why was Mahir doing this to her.
Mahir went closer to Bela... and settled his hands at her waist. " I want to be more than your friend". Bela was shocked but somewhere she knew mahirs feelings towards her. But still she was surprised. Was it that serious. Mahir pulled her closer.
"Bela I am in love with you". Mahir looked at Bela's lips. He came closer to her lips. Bela closed her eyes... Just when Mahir was about to kiss Bela. Bela Backed off.
"Stay away Mahir... I always saw you as my friend and nothing more. Just after that Bela ran inside the company and went up to her cabin.
When Bela came inside her cabin she turned on the light. She sat on the table and could not proceed what just happened. She could hear loud voices from downstairs where the party took place. She was in no mood be a part of it. She was devastated. How could she get feelings for Mahir when she is already engaged she thought. "No it will always be Vikrant... and nobody else.. But would I be happy with him".
That's what Bela always felt when she is with Mahir. She was happy and free. But she could not just let Vikrant go. Both their families where involved and they have been together since college days. "NO I can't do this.. I need to come back to my senses". Just when she was going leave her cabin. Mahir came inside.
"Bela.. I am sorry I shouldn't talk like that to you.. but I just couldn't hold back. Bela took 2 steps back and leaned towards the table. "Mahir you need to understand I am engaged and soon getting married". Mahir went towards Bela and pulled her towards him and settled his hands at her waist again. "Fine Bela then answer my one question... will you be happy with him". Bela was speechless.. how could this man know all her inner thoughts. Bela did not know what to tell him. She could not lie but also not tell the truth.. She needed to say something. In a hurry she said..Week passed to months and Bela was soon reaching a breaking point. Just when she came back home she got a mail from McCloud Designs & Graphics. Bela applied for a job at buffalo. She needed to go away from Mumbai. And when Suhani told her about this company in Buffalo. Bela took the risk. She knew if she will get the job she will always have Suhani by her side. They liked Bela's sketches that she send them. And they wanted to have a job interview with her. Bela took that as a good sign and went with it.
After 2 weeks later Bela got to know that she got the job. She was happy finally she is going to follow her dream. Finally it was time to say goodbye to the receptionist. Next day Bela went inside Andy's cabin to tell him about her new job in Buffalo.
" Andy sir. Can I talk to you for just 2 min". Andy looked up at Bela.
"Of course Bela tell me.. some boring meetings again that I have to attend".
Bela laughed. "No sir it's about me".
Andy looked surprised ... about you? ". Bela took a deep breath and finally said it.
"Sir I got a job in Buffalo.. you now I always dreamed to be an artist and they really loved my sketches and my interview. I think it's time to bid bye to this job".
Andy stood up and went towards Bela. He was sad and somewhere hurt. Bela could see that.
"Bela I really can't imagine how will it be without you. You know everything about me how to arrange meetings, how to talk with my investors, how to arrange my things. I am afraid to think that did I ever take you for granted".
Bela was kind of surprised by Andy's confession. But she never saw Andy as a bad man. He was always good to her and always made sure that her job got acknowledged. "Sir why are you saying this.. you were really a good boss and I learned a lot from you".
Andy hugged Bela and said.
"I don't know I just feel we all are going to miss you a lot.. but I don't want to come between your dreams. You are a talented girl and you should pursue this job I support you. But I know I am never going to get a better receptionist than you".
Bela smiled and thanked Andy. " Sir I just need one favour from you Bela said.
"Of course Bela tell me". Bela took a deep breath again and said.
"Sir I don't want anybody to know that I am leaving. I just want to leave without anybody knowing about it. I just hate goodbyes.. I will never be able to go if I have to say goodbye".
Andy looked worried at Bela. "But Bela you will hurt them all if you do this".
"No sir I am gonna hurt myself more if I am going to say goodbye. Plz Sir I beg you".
Andy felt it was weird but decided to go with it if it makes Bela comfortable. Andy helped Bela with all her things in a careful way so nobody would suspect that Bela was leaving.
1 week later. Andy told all that Bela has left the job and introduced Rehan who is going to be the new receptionist. Not only mahir but everybody was shocked. More than shocked he was hurt and devastated. "How could she just leave without informing". He thought. "Maybe she never saw me as her close friend who does not need to know if she is leaving"...
FLASHBACK ENDS..
With a sigh, Bela pulled her hand from the Mouth.
"Yeah," she said finally, her eyes falling to her feet, her fingers playing with the strap of her bag. "Listen, I'd better-"
Before she could continue, before she could make an excuse to leave, his hands cupped her jaw line, his lips moved toward her own...
